To help refresh audiences' memories and also get them pumped for Avatar: The Way of Water, the film that kicked the franchise off will be remastered and re-released to theaters on September 23. In the midst of announcements about the upcoming sequel, Deadline was the first to report about new work being done on the original Avatar.

According to the publication, Disney revealed that it will "re-release the original Avatar on September 23 around the globe with remastered audio and sound." These plans were revealed at CinemaCon--the largest gathering for the worldwide motion picture theater industry--in a context of sharing bigger news about the Avatar sequel. The footage of Avatar 2 screened at CinemaCon will play only in theaters with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which hits theaters starting May 6. A week after that, the clip will officially be available online

Avatar, the original, is the highest grossing movie of all time at $2.8 billion, regaining that title after overtaking Avengers: Endgame during the pandemic.

Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to be in theaters on December 16, 2022. Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet.

There are also plans for Avatars 3, 4, and 5. Way back in 2017, Cameron said all the Avatar films will have the same villain.
