James Cameron's Avatar has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to reclaim its top spot for the highest-grossing movie in the history of film. Thanks to its re-release in China, Avatar ($2.802 billion) has pulled ahead of Endgame ($2.792 billion).

Avatar needed around $7 million to pass Endgame, and it ended up bringing in $12.3 million in China over the weekend. The Avatar and Avengers franchises are both owned by Disney--following the acquisition of Fox--so the House of Mouse is the real winner here.

Avatar producer Jon Landau told Deadline, "We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theaters during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support. We are hard at work on the next Avatar films and look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story for years to come."

Actress Zoe Saldana, who starred in both Avatar and Endgame, celebrated the milestone on Instagram where she wrote, "China, we owe you one!"

As Landau said, the Avatar franchise continues with multiple sequels that are in development. The first sequel arrives in December 2022, featuring the original cast plus newcomers like Kate Winlset and Vin Diesel, among others.

Outside of the films, the developers of The Division are making a new Avatar game, in addition to a Star Wars open-world game.
