The first trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water was a massive success, picking up 148.6 million views online over its first 24 hours, including 23 million from China. Disney and 20th Century announced the numbers on Tuesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Way of Water trailer debuted first in theaters before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so the 148.6 million figure does not count the millions of people who saw it in a theater.

With 148.6 million views, The Way of Water trailer surpassed the 24-hour viewership records for Black Widow (116.8 million), Incredibles 2 (113.1 million), and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (112.4 million). It's still well behind the all-time record-holder, however, which was Spider-Man: No Way Home (355.5 million). Avengers: Endgame, meanwhile, racked up 289 million views for its first big trailer in its first 24 hours.

The Way of Water is the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron's 2009 epic blockbuster Avatar, which is the highest-grossing movie in the history of cinema. The sequel arrives in theaters on December 16 and focuses on Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their family.

The 2009 original Avatar is returning to theaters in September with new picture and sound to hype everyone up for the launch of Way of Water in December.

In addition to Avatar 2, Ubisoft is releasing its new Avatar video game, Frontiers of Pandora, later this year. It's in the works from the developers of The Division.
