The sequel to Avatar is called Avatar: The Way of Water, as unveiled by Disney at CinemaCon--the largest gathering for the worldwide motion picture theater industry. According to Deadline, a 3D teaser was introduced by director James Cameron at the event.

The footage screened at CinemaCon will play only in theaters with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which hits theaters starting May 6. A week after that, the clip will officially be available online--though it's safe to assume some theatergoers will leak details. According to a release, The Way of the Water is set more than a decade after the events of the first film and "begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure."

Given the behind-the-scenes photos that have been shared by director James Cameron as recently as December 2021, "water" factoring into the title isn't a shock. That batch of pictures from December offered a look at the sequel's ambitious underwater performance capture scenes.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to be in theaters on December 16, 2022.

Avatar, which came out in 2009, will be re-released to theaters on September 23.
