The federal government's public consultation into the possible introduction of an R18+ classification for games closes on Sunday, February 28. While all early indicators are pointing to overwhelming support for an R18+ for game, more recent canvassing of state AGs show that they are far from convinced. GameSpot AU still encourages its readers to make their opinions known. Visit the Federal Attorney General's Web site for more information.

In its submission, GameSpot has urged State, Territory, and Federal Attorneys-General to agree to introduce an R18+ rating for games. "GameSpot AU and the gaming industry’s call for the introduction of an R18+ rating for games in Australia is not a request to allow more violent or depraved games into the country. It is not a call to let people have unrestricted access to whatever content they wish. It is a call to fix a system, which does not arm a parent or guardian with the appropriate tools to recognise appropriate content for their children. It is a call to fix a system, which results in what would ordinarily be adult-rated content being classified as being suitable for 15-year-olds. And it is a call for Australia’s governments to recognise that gaming--just like its audience--has grown-up," the submission said.
