August 2020: All The Major Game Releases For PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC

Here are the biggest games to play in August, which includes Horizon Zero Dawn on PC, Madden NFL 21, Wasteland 3, and more.

With the impending launch of Xbox Series X and PS5 this holiday season and the surrounding buzz likely to dominate industry talk for the foreseeable future, August seems like a calm before the storm. Of course, there are still games coming out, both from AAA companies and smaller indie studios. One of the games, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, is even free to PS Plus subscribers. With more than 8 million players on the platform, it's one you don't want to miss. This is especially true if you have friends to play with.

There's are several exciting new games on the horizon, including a PC port of former PS4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn (See what I did there?). You can also expect games like Madden NFL Football 21, Wasteland 3, A Total War Saga: Troy, and much more. If you've been waiting for the long-anticipated return of Battletoads, we will even have that. 2020 really couldn't get any weirder. With people staying home, they even have a shot of actually beating the Turbo Tunnel for once.

To give you a proper look at what games are coming out for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch, we've rounded up all the biggest ones of August 2020 below. For a wider look at the titles still to come this year, look at our list of game release dates in 2020. Otherwise, check this article often for the latest during this month, as we'll be sure to update it with more new release dates that get announced.

Horizon Zero Dawn (PC) -- August 7

In what still seems like a surprising move, Sony is finally bringing some of its biggest games to PC. While Death Stranding launched on PC in July, Horizon Zero Dawn is the first that Sony is personally bringing to the platform. Originally released exclusively for PS4, the upcoming port sports numerous graphical enhancements, including ultra-wide support, an unlocked frame rate, improved foliage physics, and enhanced reflection details. There are also graphical options for further optimization, controller remapping, and an in-game benchmarking tool. If you're keen to try Horizon Zero Dawn on PC, then be sure to grab it on Steam and the Epic Games Store when it launches August 7. The sequel Horizon Forbidden West is expected to launch for PS5 in 2021. However, no PC version has been announced for that game. This could be the only way PC players can enjoy the franchise for some time.

Madden NFL 21 (PS4, Xbox One, PC) -- August 28

Madden NFL 21 is coming out late August to current-generation consoles and will feature various improvements to the long-running series' mechanics. This year, you can expect improved AI, more offensive/defensive plays, and even more X-Factor abilities for star players. It's worth noting that the game is also be coming to the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X, with free upgrades for current-gen owners through EA's Dual Entitlement program. That means that as long as you play the game on your new hardware before the next Madden comes out a year from now, you'll receive the enhanced version.

Wasteland 3 is finally launching on August 28. After being delayed due to the logistical challenges presented by the pandemic, the latest in the tenured post-apocalyptic isometric RPG series has been a long time coming. Developer inXile Entertainment first announced the game and successfully crowdfunded it over Fig in 2016. Since then, it has been made part of Microsoft's Xbox Game Studios, but the title is still releasing on PS4, as well. Players can expect improved turn-based combat and higher quality visuals than past games, alongside other new features, such as vehicle navigation and co-op play.

""one of which is a PC port of former PS4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn (See what I did there?)""

its still exclusive to the ps4. i dont see any dates for x box and switch.

same argument can be pointed out for the x box exclusives .. they are exclusive on the x box platform (pc/console) that cant be brought on ps4 or switch

Despite a backlog as long as my arm, gonna but hzd day one (on egd) if only to try to help convince Sony to publish more on pc. That and I’ve got a gift card burning a hole in my wallet that I want to save just for it!

Horizon is such a great game. You can play it in multiple languages (I played it in Spanish and French just to practice).

I am bummed that Baldur's Gate III still has no release date. Looking forward to Wasteland 3 as well.

Looking forward to Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition for PC. Been such a wait but only a week to go, yay.

I'm interested in PGA Tour 2K21, but haven't pre-ordered that one as I'm waiting for reviews and gamer reviews who have played the Tiger Wood's games (which I love) to give comparisons.

I'm seriously excited for Wasteland 3, but I feel like they've been super quiet about it lately. I was honestly expecting another delay with just how quiet it's been.

Darn, the one I really want to play is Serious Sam 4, but it is for PC only? Does anyone know if it is coming to PS4/XB1?

@just1mohr: Yes it is. Apparently it has a timed exclusivity with Google Stadia and after that has expired, it will be coming to PS4 & Xbox One in early 2021. No precise release date though.

How about the second highest rated game off all time on steam.
FACTORIO on Friday August 14th

Or how about Empyrion on August 5th

Author should do some research and not just publish what he thinks we should play.

For those who haven't already played it. Horizon Zero Dawn is definitely worth it.

There are a few quirks like not being able to queue the audio files while moving on with the story (You'll find out what this means when you play it), but it's a great deal of fun and the story line is pretty good.

I've played it through doing the main story only pretty quickly, then went back and completed the side missions on the second playthrough. There are endless ways to play and battle.

Looking forward to the second game on PS5.

I wish they made Captain Tsubasa gameplay like it was on NES or SNES with today’s graphics.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a good game, but they really went overboard with all the boring fetch quests. So bad you'd almost think it was Ubisoft game. Developers don't seem to realize that sometimes less is more.

@ronaldmcreagan: but these side quests adds to the overall story .... and has a payoff for helping

ubisoft does them as filler and once done... forgot and moved on and never mentioned in any part of the game again

@ronaldmcreagan: Very few fetch quests, https://www.ign.com/wikis/horizon-zero-dawn/Side_Quests anyone can just scroll down and view them. Are there go here, kill shit there, come back. Yeah of course, but that is the design of all quests, why they call them quests. And like Skyrim, optional.

The incredible variety is really well done. A few complaints is that the earlier ones require certain kills in order to introduce mechanics. Still though, going through the skeleton of a building in the early morning with fog on the ground and light shafts sifting through the trees all while hunting and being hunted by packs of ravagers.... nothing like it.

@ronaldmcreagan: Guess fetch quests and repetitiveness is not as annoying when the actual gameplay is really fun. Finished Horizon twice, gave up on Odyssey midway cause I was bored.

@ronaldmcreagan: Most fetch quests are totally optional. Do them, or don't.

I hear Madden's newest feature is COVID.

Otherwise, really excited for HZD since I don't have a PS4. Hopefully I hate it so I'm not tempted to buy a PS5.

@dancingcactus: Don't know about the new Horizon game on the PS5, but the original Horizon game on the PS4 only ran at 30FPS, so you are lucky to have waited for the superior PC master race version.

@ronaldmcreagan: It looks really good and I've heard nothing but good things about it. It's definitely my type of game, so I'm really hoping to get a quality experience out of it.

Wonder if it will have ultrawide support. Because 3440x1440 at 120 FPS for this would be incredible.

Just got to finish A Plague Tale first.

@dancingcactus: It's definitely a good game, and I had a lot of fun playing it, which is rare for me, I just thought there were way too many fetch quest missions. By the end, I was happy the game was over and never touched the DLC. As for 3440x1440 at 120 FPS, I have no idea; but it won't be a broken 30FPS, that's for sure. As I said in my previous post, you are lucky to have waited for the PC master race version.

If the PC version of Death Stranding is any indication, then I am really excited to play HZD again on PC.

To those who have not already played it, enjoy!
