Atlus preps Trine 2, PSP Knights in the Nightmare

Import publisher confirms sequel to action platformer, port of DS strategy game will be at E3 alongside Etrian Odyssey III and next project from Zeno Clash developer Ace Team, Rock of Ages.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo is often thought of as a show packed with surprises, but many publishers give at least a glimpse of what they'll have on display long before the show floor at the Los Angeles Convention Center opens. Atlus is the latest to join the club, announcing four games it will be showing to the press next week: Trine 2, Rock of Ages, Etrian Odyssey III, and Knights in the Nightmare for the PSP.

Knights in the Nightmare's art was almost as complex as its gameplay.
Knights in the Nightmare's art was almost as complex as its gameplay.

Trine 2 is the follow-up to last year's downloadable PC and PlayStation 3 action platformer from Finnish developer Frozenbyte. The studio will be handling development duties on the sequel, but Atlus has not confirmed platforms or a release date for the game.

The publisher was similarly tight-lipped about Rock of Ages, saying only that the game is being developed by Ace Team. Based in Santiago, Chile, Ace Team is best known for making Zeno Clash, the downloadable first-person action fighting game released last year on the PC. An Xbox 360 "Ultimate Edition" of Zeno Clash was released last month.

Atlus' lineup isn't strictly downloadable, as the publisher confirmed that it would be localizing a pair of Japanese retail releases. Etrian Odyssey III for the DS will be the publisher's third time around the block with the turn-based strategy series, while Knights in the Nightmare for the PSP will adapt last year's DS hybrid strategy-action-role-playing game to work using more conventional controls.

Trine is a magiciall game that needed just a few more levels and more bosses. I hope they do something about that, or maybe even just make a new story with new chars instead of a direct sequel.

Played a bit of Trine, and have Knights in the Nightmare for the DS already...the thing that interests me the most is the pending NA release of EO III. Now, if they'd only announce a street date. To the comments below mine, Atlus only published Ogre Battle (my favorite game series of all time). They did not develop it. Enix actually did. And even before Square and Enix merged, the team that made Ogre Battle worked on FFT (which was basically Tactics Ogre in FF clothing). So it seems to me that we'll probably not see another Ogre Battle anytime soon, as Squeenix is too busy churning out FF and DQ games. Oh, and for the article's author, the Etrian Odyssey series is NOT turn-based strategy. It's old-school turn-based first person RPG dungeon crawl, with a heavy emphasis on character-building. Of course, any announcement of a Demon's Souls sequel would make me melt with excitement, but we'll probably hear it from From Software (the developer), not Atlus (the publisher), considering Sony will most likely publish it worldwide (they already admitted they made a mistake not publishing the first game in North America).

trine is a great game that definitely deserves its sequel as with a previous commentator i hope they get the same composer as before as the music was just as important to the experience as the rest of the game was.

@gubrushadow Many thought the same thing with GTA Chinatown wars, but they brought that game successfully to the PSP and it was a great port....I trust Atlus and the Developer can do wthe same with Knights in the Nightmare.

Trine is an excellent little Platformer. Its great to see it get a sequel, and I am more then curious about the Knights in the Nightmare port as well. I am sure at E3 we will see more of the english version of the Persona 3 PSP port, and hopefully some unknown games(SMT please) we donot know about. Atlus is a great publisher(And developer) so i hope some great stuff will come from those guys. And @AltoShadow13 I second a Demon Souls 2.

Ya know what'd be nice to see? A Warsong/Langrisser compilation on PSN from Atlus for the US. It'll never happen, though. Berserk (Dreamcast) had a sequel on PS2...but only in Japan. Releases exclusive to certain regions should be boycotted!!

Oh, and just when I bought Knights in the Nightmare for DS. *Facepalm* Well, I'm curious to see how this game can possibly work sans stylus, and I can never complain about a (good) localization!

I hope they make Trine 2 for PS3. It's been massive fun for me and my friends on multiple occasions. I just ask that they address the lag when a lot of things begin to happen on screen at once. Particularly, when there are too many enemies, flame-breathing skeletons, and the effects of the warrior's hammer when it thunders. Anyhoo, can't wait to hear/see more about it next week!

The first Trine was awesome. I wonder if the story continues. Will we pick the same 3 characters or will we play as the Wizard's 3 sons?

Knight in nightmare was awesome but the stylus made that possible, doing with the weird thumb stick would be awkward.

I hope they get the port of Knights in the Nightmare done right.. I wanted to play it so badly when it came out but it was really hard to find a copy and the idea of being able to download it off PSN or see new copies in a store with a re-release is enticing...

Knights in the Nightmare was a touch-screen heavy game so I can't see how they are going to translate the fast paced touch-based gameplay of it with PSP controls, but if done right then I can easily say it's definetely worth buying.
