Atari six-month revenue halves as online income increases

Ghostbusters-less half-year sees sales plummet 56.8 percent; Champions Online, Star Trek Online revenues boost bottom line.

Today, Atari reported its earnings for the six months ended September 30. Half-year revenues for the publisher fell 56.8 percent from €68.5 million ($94 million) to €29.6 million ($40.8 million). However, six-month losses were also down, falling from €27.0 million ($37.2 million) to €9.2 million ($12.7 million) year-over-year.

Atari is less in the red than it was last year.
Atari is less in the red than it was last year.

Atari attributed the lower income to several factors. One, the same period in 2009 saw the release of Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which was a solid seller for the company. The April-September period of 2010 also saw Atari release fewer but more profitable games, a reason for the narrowed losses. The highest-profile games released during the period were the downloadable titles Blade Kitten and the rework of the vintage game Haunted House.

Another interesting trend was Atari's newfound reliance on its online properties. The six months ended September 30, 2010, saw some 43.6 percent of Atari's revenues come from online games, up from just 2.6 percent during the same period in 2006. Atari owns Cryptic Studios, developer of Star Trek Online and Champions Online, and also publishes Dungeons & Dragons Online. The latter game is currently free to play, as Champions Online will be starting next year.

Looking ahead, Atari said that it will continue its "strategic shift towards online/casual/social gaming, a market segment where Atari intends to benefit from new growth drivers." One element of this strategy is the Atari GO initiative, which aims both to help indie developers get their games on social platforms and to get sites using unauthorized versions of Atari games to adopt authorized editions.

@ GeneralArrow well in the article it says Atari publishes it. Quote from article: Atari owns Cryptic Studios, developer of Star Trek Online and Champions Online, and also publishes Dungeons & Dragons Online. so it does have something to do with DDO and I just said that I like to play it. what's the big deal?

The fact that cryptic's terrible games- which were both downright failures in every regard- is the best atari has to offer I think is the final death call for this company...

I feel bad for Atari. The DBZ games accounted for half of their sales, until they lost the license to Bandai Namco.

when a game goes free to play there needs to be a system in place to reward those that supported the developer, like a previous poster wrote without such a system this will encourage users not to support them in the future.

"The latter game is currently free to play, as Champions Online will be starting next year. " Well I guess they taught me a lesson on not supporting a game at launch. So much for the cash I dumped into them for a lifetime membership....

"Casual" for a gamer isn't the same thing as it is for the average Joe on the street. Not by a mile. Most companies don't get this, hence the flood of "casual junk" games we get on the internet. Hopefully Atari can realize this and adjust accordingly.

"Looking ahead, Atari said that it will continue its "strategic shift towards online/casual/social gaming, a market segment where Atari intends to benefit from new growth drivers." Like there isn't enough 'casual' junk out there already? If you make quality it doesn't need to be playable by a 5 year old to be a good seller, nor by someone on their cellphone while they wait at a red light. My gods....

The Ghostbuster Game was so good that I felt saddened when it ended. I hope that another one gets made and improves on it's already impressive game.

Blade Kitten was bad and so was Star Trek Online. Ghostbusters was a great game. I still enjoy playing it. The commentary from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis is hilarious. Can't wait for the 3rd movie to be released.

"Looking ahead, Atari said that it will continue its "strategic shift towards online/casual/social gaming, a market segment where Atari intends to benefit from new growth drivers." " Don't mind me. I just die inside a little bit every time I read a comment like this. Neverwinter Nights 2, Mask of the Betrayer, Indigo Prophecy, The Witcher...guess that sort of stuff isn't Atari's thing anymore. God I hate having spent thousands of dollars growing up on video games only to see them targeting my mom and dad's market segment with new games these days.

Champions Online isn't nearly as entertaining as City of Heroes/Villains, mainly because, last I checked, you can't be a villain in CO.

Blade Kitten failed on so many levels which is one cause of money lost and maybe canceling the console release for Champions Online bcuz you lose buyers in turn you drop on sales. They just need something very original to take them back to the top.
