Atari, Activision team up for Flashback 2

Sequel to retro plug-and-play console to feature River Raid, Pitfall!

In 1979, a group of Atari game developers, disgruntled at not being given credit for the games they made, fled the company and founded Activision, burning some bridges and becoming the very first third-party game developer in the process.

Some 26 years later, the two companies are cooperating once more, as Atari today announced that it has licensed the rights for two of Activision's most popular Atari 2600 hits, Pitfall! and River Raid, for inclusion in the upcoming plug-and-play Atari Flashback 2 console.

The Atari Flashback 2 is modeled after the Atari 2600, right down to the wood-grain paneling, and boasts more than 40 games from that system, including home-brew ones and rare prototypes of unreleased games like Aquaventure and Combat 2. The system will ship with two controllers and should hit shelves in August for just under $30.
