Assassin's Creed Unity Runs at 900p/30fps on Xbox One and PS4 to "Avoid Debates" [Update]

Update: Ubisoft has issued a statement denying it has downgraded the PS4 version of Assassin's Creed Unity.

Original story: The new current-gen and PC-only Assassin's Creed game, Assassin's Creed Unity, will run at a resolution of 900p and a frame rate of 30 frames per second on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Speaking with VideoGamer, senior producer Vincent Pontbriand revealed the figures, which come in below the 1080p/60fps figures that Ubisoft was reportedly targeting for both platforms. And while there is a technical reason for not being able to reach those numbers, Ubisoft decided to make the two console versions identical in the interest of parity. "We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff," Pontbriand explained.

What holds Unity back is the processors that the consoles are equipped with. They are what's responsible for handling AI--and there is a lot of that to be handled, as Ubisoft has claimed the game can support crowds of 30,000 NPCs.

"Technically we're CPU-bound," Pontbriand said. "The GPUs are really powerful, obviously the graphics look pretty good, but it's the CPU [that] has to process the AI, the number of NPCs we have on screen, all these systems running in parallel.

"We were quickly bottlenecked by that and it was a bit frustrating, because we thought that this was going to be a tenfold improvement over everything AI-wise, and we realized it was going to be pretty hard. It's not the number of polygons that affect the frame rate. We could be running at 100fps if it was just graphics, but because of AI, we're still limited to 30 frames per second."

We've followed up with Ubisoft to see if we can learn anything more about the situation.

Both the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag ran at 900p initially, but a patch released on launch day brought the PS4 version up to the vaunted resolution of 1080p. It isn't the only game to run at a high resolution on PS4, but more recently, thanks to an update, developers have increasingly reached 1080p with the Xbox One versions of their games.

I kept saying it, no one listened, that the garbage AMD CPU was the bottleneck, both consoles could have 2k shader units and it wouldn't make a bit of difference

It's not like a boycott of the PS4 version would do much. I think there are far more less educated gamers out there that will buy this on either console and never know this even happened. It completely goes against why people bought the PS4 in the first place. If devs start pulling this stunt on other games they need to hear about it on all possible social media outlets so people stop buying these products. Microsoft can not be allowed to single handedly hold back this generation of gaming.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Devs have always considered the lower platform performance when factoring cross-platform development in. Past gen was essentially the same thing with PS3 hardware a bit more superior to the Xbox 360 (owned both at the time). The market has always done a standardization based on the weakest hardware. PC gamers suffer this since like, forever, where they usually have superior hardware available to them and yet they get a "limited" version due to consoles. Big companies need to cut back on costs as much as possible, especially on todays market where an indie has a shot (longshot, but a shot nonetheless that has happened several times in recent past) to compete with large publishers.


We all know Watchdogs (Ubisoft) to have suffered the same thing, the engine could handle better and differently on PC yet they lowered down the content to avoid giving a partner (Sony, Microsoft, etc..) any preference and reaching the largest audience possible regardless of their platform of choice.


It is cheaper to make your dev team port a game then develop it further for each platform. Headcount/payroll is and always has been the most expensive atribute of any company, so to avoid cutting jobs and losing talent (funny how large publishers don't care much about talent retention), they cut on stuff like this.


This is without considering a potential political situation with large partners like Sony and Microsoft, who knows how big publishers deal with console manufactures, I would guess they have more interaction with console manufacturers than the average developer thus, maybe, enforcing some ill practices to undermine their competitor (a bit much on conspiracy though if we pursue this line of thought).


Last but not least, PS4 owners are not really getting screwed because it will come down to the exclusives, and those will always shine the brightest possible way. I do not own a PS4 at this time, I do own a XBONE which is slowly gathering dust here, hopefully something like Crackdown 3 or a new Gears of War that is actually good could revert to that, but right now I am getting these multi platform games on the PC where I don't have to deal with backward compatibility issues in the future (as it has happened with current gen).


I believe Sony players get PS4 for its exclusive titles and the ocasional game that does try to take more advantage from that platform, if you got a PS4 for the cookie cutters Call of Duty, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, those titles have little difference between platforms (as far as annoying me goes), so again, I don't think this screws the player base, but it is sad to waste the additional potential of better hardware, that I can agree with you on.

@steaminpotatoes Dead Rising 3 for PC installs at a forced 720p setting with all config options set to emulate the way it looked on the Xbox One. You have to go in and fix the settings so it looks like a real PC game. Watch Dogs isn't the only PC game effected by the ghetto box.
