Assassin's Creed Unity Runs at 900p/30fps on Xbox One and PS4 to "Avoid Debates" [Update]

Update: Ubisoft has issued a statement denying it has downgraded the PS4 version of Assassin's Creed Unity.

Original story: The new current-gen and PC-only Assassin's Creed game, Assassin's Creed Unity, will run at a resolution of 900p and a frame rate of 30 frames per second on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Speaking with VideoGamer, senior producer Vincent Pontbriand revealed the figures, which come in below the 1080p/60fps figures that Ubisoft was reportedly targeting for both platforms. And while there is a technical reason for not being able to reach those numbers, Ubisoft decided to make the two console versions identical in the interest of parity. "We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff," Pontbriand explained.

What holds Unity back is the processors that the consoles are equipped with. They are what's responsible for handling AI--and there is a lot of that to be handled, as Ubisoft has claimed the game can support crowds of 30,000 NPCs.

"Technically we're CPU-bound," Pontbriand said. "The GPUs are really powerful, obviously the graphics look pretty good, but it's the CPU [that] has to process the AI, the number of NPCs we have on screen, all these systems running in parallel.

"We were quickly bottlenecked by that and it was a bit frustrating, because we thought that this was going to be a tenfold improvement over everything AI-wise, and we realized it was going to be pretty hard. It's not the number of polygons that affect the frame rate. We could be running at 100fps if it was just graphics, but because of AI, we're still limited to 30 frames per second."

We've followed up with Ubisoft to see if we can learn anything more about the situation.

Both the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag ran at 900p initially, but a patch released on launch day brought the PS4 version up to the vaunted resolution of 1080p. It isn't the only game to run at a high resolution on PS4, but more recently, thanks to an update, developers have increasingly reached 1080p with the Xbox One versions of their games.

Everyone here is assuming it was the PS4 version that was held back. In reality, the PS4 version was held back by it's limitations as the Xbox version was by its'. Having the amount of chars on screen they're dealing with *IS* crazy CPU bound. And it's pretty much ALL CPU-intensive integer calculations (AI, placement, object states). It also has a lot of triangles on screen. Both systems can draw the triangles fine, but each shader pass burns fill rate. Usually, *USUALLY* the PS4 has GPU to spare and has the fill rate to draw fine at 1080p, BUT, and it's a big BUT, they had to compensate for the PS4's ultra-crap implementation of the CPU cores and the limitation of clock, cache and number of cores effectively available to game for calculation by offloading much of the processing that SHOULD be done on CPU, but cant, to the GPU. So this really is the first true next-gen game which is testing the limits of both systems. PS4s wasting tons of GFlops on GPGPU to keep up with the CPU rate on Xbox One. GPGPU is inherently inefficient for integer operations.

Xbox One is and has been a GPU issue from the start. They offer enough GPU to hit 1080p 60 depending on the game type. But in a game like unity, it's actually remarkable they're hitting 900p. This is clearly a case where the superior execution order and number of cores and speed available to the Xbone CPUs is paying off. They designed it to not have any single bottleneck. The whole system generally becomes a bottleneck and then you optimize around that. Gen7-type games excelled on PS4, because the CPU loads were almost non-existent. Now that the CPUs are getting maxed, The Xbone will see parity or superiority because of it's discrete audio processor, move engines, etc. PS4 counts on having extra GPU cycles to cover where the hardware is otherwise lacking. At launch, all reasonable people said the machines were pretty much identical, but took different routes to get there. Expect more of this as the generation progresses.

And get over it. PS4 people didn't bitch when Watch Dogs was 900p, or BF4, or any of that. They only bitch when their number isn't higher than Xbone. How childish can you get?!? Grow up.

@zfazal84 When asking "How must does the hardware cost?" you must first ask "How must will it cost to purchase the system?", on the PC you have; cheaper games (there is no hardware licence that needs to be paid) and no mouthy subscription, and when you buy a game it is not a usable for a single generation. Unlike consoles where you pay more for games, have to pay a mouthy fee and where in affect you are renting the game for that generation.


And to state the obverse the vast majority of people already have a PC, so the better question you must ask is not "How must will it cost to purchase the system?" but rather "How much more will be cost to upgrade the system and how much will it cost in total (games, fees, etc..)".
