Assassin's Creed Recreated With PlayStation 1 Graphics, And It Looks Absurd

Check out Altair's low-poly makeover.

The first Assassin's Creed was a technical showpiece for the Xbox 360 when it first came out, and the series has generally continued to push forward realistic graphics and high-quality animations with each new installment. But one fan decided to see what Assassin's Creed would be like if it were made in the '90s instead of the '00s, and so he demade the game to look like a PlayStation 1 title.

User 98Demake posted a video of his low-poly, roughly animated recreation of Assassin's Creed, and it looks hilarious. It's exactly as slow and low-fidelity as you'd expect, and the gameplay is even accompanied by a PS1-style soundtrack. Check it out below.

98Demake attempts to make his demakes as close to PS1-quality as possible, using similar graphical constraints that PS1 developers had to deal with. He's made several more of these recreations, including for Fallout 4, The Last of Us, and Grand Theft Auto V. You can read more about his process over at GamesRadar.

Other fans have done similar demakes in the past, as well, such as this particularly cool-looking 8-bit demake of The Witness and a classic arcade-style demake of Titanfall.

In other Assassin's Creed news, the next mainline release, Assassin's Creed: Origins, launches on October 27 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It takes place in Ancient Egypt, and it features significantly overhauled combat, navigation, and character progression.

I wonder if he used the models from the DS version of the game for this.

Avatar image for ChrisAnetkaC

Anyone still opposed to remasters after this?

I probably own more games for PS1 than for any other console, and believe me, there were DEFINITELY games with this level of draw distance and PLENTY with WORSE graphics and animation. This isn't too far off an accurate median representation... And for what it's worth, in spite of it apparently being the first game jumping to a lot of people's minds, MGS isn't even close to the technical high water-mark for PS1.

Avatar image for julittok

This isn't accurate PS1 games were a lot better than this, for instance some of you guys might remember Soul Reaver Legacy Of Kain, what a game!

Avatar image for spaced92

It's kinda vaguely there, but even for 98 the animations would still be a 1/10. Generally everything could have looked better on a PS1, I thought they were parodying Silent Hill or something with the draw distance? But that game looked far better. Solid effort though.

Avatar image for aki2017

That was entertaining. Nice effort. PS1 could do better graphics and draw distance, but this was just one guy for entertainment purposes, and he did a decent job

Avatar image for filthy_casual_

i don't want anyone shitting on the system that brought us Metal Gear Solid, Symphony of the Night, and Final Fantasy 7.

Avatar image for Mo60

Do you remember my friends Medal of honour game on PS1 ? it was an awesome game.I finished The game and it was two parts on two discs and i finished the two parts and it was amazing.

Avatar image for julittok

@Mo60: I remember it being awesome I was like 11 years old, saw a vid the other day and let me say it hasn't aged well, looks pretty clunky.

A PS1 AC? Isn't that just called 'Tomb Raider'?

Avatar image for jinzo9988

Either it's absurd for the sake of comedy or this guy didn't actually live during this time period. It's the animations and the landscapes that bother me. Things weren't that bad back then. It's not wildly off, but watch a minute or two of something like Tenchu 2 and this demake looks like something the team behind Bubsy 3D would've made at some point during their miserable existence.

Avatar image for filthy_casual_

@jinzo9988: yeah the graphics were choppy but the animations were not nearly that bad

Avatar image for Abdulrahman1981

Many games were like this on PS1 and early PS2, but there were games with great graphics on PS1 like Chrono Cross, Policenauts and Mega Man X4

Avatar image for docfuturity

People seem to forget that Metal Gear Solid came out on PS1. This is what AC would look like if one guy made it with the most basic assets at hand....PS1 games could be technically amazing (for their time) as MGS demonstrates. Also, games from that time period tended to use pre-rendered backgrounds rather than 3D backgrounds if they wanted more detail and elaboration. A 1998 AC really would have looked more like MGS or Resident Evil.

Avatar image for Duffy12323

@docfuturity: Good post. Completely agree

Avatar image for craigtl

@docfuturity: Metal Gear is an excellent example of what the PS1 was truely capable of back then. This guy is just making fun of the old games I guess, they were not that bad at all.

Avatar image for Erllun

this is waaaaaaaaaaaaay off

Avatar image for esqueejy

Whatever floats your boat, I guess...but I still have to wonder why anyone would waste their time on something like this.

Avatar image for tonyleo01

This makes me miss Tenchu.

Avatar image for craigtl

@tonyleo01: That game was so underrated. They need to bring that back.

Avatar image for dante9006

There are PS1 games that are more fluid and look better than this. This looks very exaggerated.

Avatar image for craigtl

@dante9006: Right, maybe the die hard trilogy comes close to this, but when you think games like Metal Gear Solid, you realize this guy is just trolling the old gen.

Avatar image for KotomineKirei

Games looked better than that around that time.

Armored Core (1997), Crash Bandicoot 3 (1998), MediEvil (1998), Mega Man Legends (1997), Metal Gear Solid (1998), Spyro the Dragon (1998), Tenchu (1998), and Tomb Raider III (1998) all looked better.

If Assassin's Creed had been made back then, it still would have looked okay, and it would have had better movement and animation.

Also, of course, in the year after 1998, PS1 games looked better as well.

It reminds me of that time traveling game where you go around collecting weird gold things and go through various eras.I cannot remember what it's called at all though right now.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a4e0e5a9e5e5

Good try for a first attempt. This is a Pre Pre Alpha release I expect.

Avatar image for deadkingdg

There, you have it, XBox One has better graphics than PSOne!

Avatar image for illegal_peanut

Funny thing is, this is actually better then the DS port in some ways.

Avatar image for Dark_Matters

Literally every PlayStation 1 game looked better than this.

Either he's trying really hard to make it look as bad as possible, or he just really, really sucks at this.

Avatar image for rabih55555

@Dark_MattersHave you ever played PS1 ? Almost all their games look so bad and very pixelated, when you look at on TV. I'm not saying that all of them looked as bad as this assassin's creed, but it look bad and pixelated

Even if you play it on emulator with higher resolution, it will is look bad because of low polygon and awful textures.

On other, PS2 was massive improvement over PS1. I would even say that going from PS1 to PS2 is almost as big as going from PS2 to PS4 (two generations).

Avatar image for jj2112

PS1? Come on! This looks more like the first Tomb Raider on PC!

Avatar image for rabih55555

Avatar image for hardeddie

Looks about right. Similar graphics to when it was released back then. Ubisoft and their bait and switch! Yes I know. This!

Avatar image for nE0-n1nja

This isn't accurate, there are a lot of third person games from the PS1 era that looked a lot better than this.

EDIT: I just scrolled down the comments and realized that a lot of other people commented this same thing lol

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum

@nE0-n1nja: In general he seems to be using the same Silent Hill-esque style as foundation to everything. The Dark Souls, Fallout and Last of Us all looked and played like this.

There were games like Soul Reaver and Tenchu with pretty dynamic combat and platforming. Metal Gear and Final Fantasy looked a ton better and then there are the games like Crash, Spyro with perfect draw distance, smooth camera and whatnot.

Yes Assassin's Creed forced into the mold of Silent Hill was always going to suck. Still, these are pretty funny videos.

Avatar image for Foxhound71

I don't get the point of this. "What would Assassins Creed look like on the Ps1?" Well it would look like shit, wouldn't it?

Avatar image for bobblehead875

@Foxhound71: that's kind of all art. "What would _____ look/be/sound/feel like if it were like ______?"

Avatar image for illegal_peanut

@Foxhound71: For science!

Avatar image for Pelezinho777

Looks better than 360 version.

Avatar image for DanieltheDead

I'd say this would be more indicative of a first-gen small publisher of the day - there were plenty of PS1 games that looked far better than that.

Avatar image for Ktulu1982

PS1 games looked better than this, this looks more like a parody.

Avatar image for gns

@Ktulu1982: Um, no, not really. Maybe some games, but the majority of them were like this.

Avatar image for Dark_Matters

@gns: You're either blind or high.

Avatar image for rabih55555

I do agree with GNS. Most PS1 game look as bad as this. Even the best looking game on PS1 look horrible compared to early dreamcast and PS2 games

People often forgot how old game look when they do not play them for years.

Emulators can make it look little better by running it at high resolution (most PS1 were 320x240 which looks so bad and pixelated even on old CRT monitor). However, even if you play it at high resolution on emulator, the game is still look bad because of low ploygon, extremely low texture resolution and horrible character models.

Avatar image for gns

@Dark_Matters: some videos about how some PS1 games looked. Maybe during later years (post 2000s) the game graphics became slightly better. Keep in mind that PS1 is about 20 years old

Avatar image for streamline

@gns: yeah, some games looked great in our memories until we go back and play them again. Virtua Fighter and DOA come to mind.

Avatar image for deviltaz35

What a clever little vegemite. Must have alot of free time though.
