Assassin's Creed Origins Review Roundup [Update]

Faithfull?

It's a huge week for game releases, with Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Super Mario Odyssey launching at the same time. Of course, there's also Assassin's Creed Origins, and reviews for Ubisoft's newest entry in the series have started to appear online.

In GameSpot's Assassin's Creed Origins review, Alessandro Fillari awarded it a 7/10, describing its depiction of Egypt as "a beautifully realized setting, showing off distinct cultures and activity." However, he also noted that "persistent technical issues" and "awkward, clumsy combat and stealth systems" let it down.

  • Release date: October 27
  • Price: $60 / £49.99

GameSpot -- 7/10

"While Assassin's Creed Origins reaches great heights in this new setting, it routinely runs into issues that bog down the overall experience. Technical issues make for an inconsistent experience and its new gameplay pillars wobble under the weight of its systems. But despite this, the world of Origins remains fresh and exciting to explore, which is a testament to the remarkable setting and compelling story. Assassin's Creed has undergone many changes in its long and storied history, and Origins feels like the first step in the start of a new journey. It has its fair share of problems, but the vision for its future is one worth pursuing." -- Alessandro Fillari [Full review]

IGN -- 9.0/10

"Assassin's Creed Origins is a deep-dive into a truly stunning realization of ancient Egypt, with a rich series of cultures, genuine characters, and more mission variety than any other game in the series. The combat is challenging and thoughtful, and while the loot system doesn't match up to games like Destiny 2, there are enough different weapon types and enough enemy variety to keep you swapping between weapons, catered to the situation. The RPG elements encourage challenges of their own, and even despite a handful of bugs, I desperately wanted to keep playing." -- Alanah Pearce [Full review]

Polygon -- 8.5/10

"In essence, Assassin's Creed Origins is much the same game as the original Assassin's Creed, which came out a decade ago. It's a formula that people like to play, and it's certainly been honed and improved over the years. Origins is, then, undoubtedly the best iteration of this formula yet. But I yearn for a fresh approach and new ideas, something that astounds the senses as much as the wondrous world this game inhabits." -- Colin Campbell [Full review]

Game Informer -- 8.5/10

"Origins doesn't completely rebuild Assassin's Creed, but makes a number of smart, significant changes to a formula that, despite yearly updates, was showing its age. The increased freedom in how you approach targets, the more active combat, and alluring world not only make exploring Egypt a rewarding experience, but also offer a strong direction for the series going forward while still remembering what made it unique in the first place." -- Suriel Vazquez [Full review]

GamesRadar+ -- 5/5

"Everything is present and correct and the campaign conclusion will send Assassin's Creed lore fans suitably giddy while simultaneously teasing a new era of Creed for the years ahead. Confident, exhilarating and utterly deadly, Assassin's Creed Origins is now, finally, the one to beat." -- Louise Blain [Full review]

Eurogamer -- Recommended

"Last night I moved in on the final boss fight. Then, I moved past the final boss fight and into the most bizarre endgame I can imagine in a big budget affair. And it was bizarre because of the scale Ubisoft was willing to reach for, even now, the places it was willing to take me, even at the end of an adventure, and its sheer unwillingness to stop making improbably lavish new stuff. As dawn rose, I wondered whether this would ever end, and I realised that I didn't really want it to. Assassin's Creed remains a wonderfully foolhardy game in terms of its ambition and its generosity, even if it it is no longer quite as distinct as it once was." -- Christian Donlan [Full review]

USGamer -- 4/5

"Assassin's Creed Origins is continued improvement for the series. Unity was a misstep, but Syndicate recovered from that and Origins stands as an improvement. There are still a few issues here and there: combat is better, but could stand for some tightening and assassination needs a dedicated, consistent button. But overall, this is a very good game and stands near the top of the series. Bayek's story is an excellent one and as a soft reboot for the franchise, Origins does its job. I'm looking forward to seeing where they go from here." -- Mike Williams [Full review]

RPG Site -- 6/10

"Assassin's Creed: Origins offers an engrossing and deeply satisfying open world in the lands of Egypt. Gorgeous visuals make it a lovely place to explore with rich environments. Still, the excessive amount of bugs at launch are devastating and hampered my experience significantly. Add to that a poorly paced narrative devoid of substantial character development and a battle system that fails to meet its full potential and I can't help but feel something important is missing, Regardless, Assassin's Creed: Origins has a lot to offer new and old fans alike--though the state of its technical performance at launch is highly questionable." -- Kazuma Hashimoto [Full review]

Destructoid -- 8/10

"I was really torn in assessing Assassin's Creed Origins, as it hits several of the same lows as the rest of the series, with its sometimes uneven mission structure and janky physics. But given that they now have the formula down to a science and didn't rush it out the door, all of that is a little easier to deal with than its predecessors. It was a big risk trying so many new things at once, but it worked, and the setting carries it." -- Chris Carter [Full review]

Im glad to see gamespot actually give out legitimate reviews like this and shadow of war, both games look good on the surface but are just husks of what they really should be.

Finally got my hands on the game and played it for more than 6 hours today. I'd give the game a solid 8 from what I've played so far. The game is pretty good; but the fun gets ruined by annoying bugs and jittery combat and stealth mechanics. If it wasn't for those issues; I'd give this game a 9.5 because the story is stellar and the world is just beautiful and engaging. I think I'll end up getting it after my rental period is up next week. Until then; I'll be playing it all weekend.

Gamespot has carved out a nice niche for itself going against what the majority thinks and likes. If it works though might as well go for it.

here come the "It's not fair GS gave my favorite game a HORRIBLE 7!" comments. It's almost like...wait for it...reviews are the opinion of ONE person. Check other sites, check metacritic, and move on with your life and enjoy the games you want to enjoy.

Hopefully this means that after taking some time off that Ubisoft has gotten their mojo back with the Assassin's Creed franchise. They should keep it bi-yearly (every 2 years) and focus on quality titles every time.

@donald10: So am I. The only game I'm going to keep playing is Destiny 2 until I get the X. I want to see what all the new games are supposed to truly look and feel like. I want 60fps more than anything though.

@donald10: Gamespot kept complaining of technical problems while other review sites said these techincal problems were minor. My guess is Gamespot just got unlucky

I gave up on Assassins Creed long ago. The endless, pointless, grueling fetch & follow missions used as filler drove me crazy and had to part ways. Please tell they focused more on actual story and progression than time wasting bloat.

GS has kind of an indirect feud with Ubisoft. It begun with the first review embargo (on Watch_dogs? can't remember) and since then GS treats every Ubisoft game very harshly.

@Saladudo: Really? They game previous AC a 9, The Division and 8 and For Honor another 8. That sounds like usual Gamespot's reviews to me.

@Warlord_Irochi: That's what I'm saying, they give a fair review and not a single point more. Also, an 8/10 for a multi million budget AAA title is a low score, let alone 7/10 as in this case.

@Saladudo: An 8 is low? The metascore for both For Honor is 78, for The Division it's 80. For Syndicate the metascore is 76, which a lot lower than the 9 it got here.

I see no history of Gamespot treating Ubisoft games poorly, or even any differently than the rest of the review sites.

@Mogan: Quoting Boromir: "One does not simply invest tens of million dollars to get an 8/10 on GameSpot"

Also, I didn't say GS treats Ubisoft poorly, just with not too much sympathy.

@Saladudo: That's horrible logic.

A game studio invests millions of dollars to make millions of more dollars. An 8/10 will do that just fine for those who are interested.

I don't think a 7 out of 10 is a bad review, but I was just a bit surprised it wasn't higher. Glad to see the game is getting good reviews overall, I was really looking forward to this one. Can't wait to play it!

@WarFox89: Different reviewers, different opinions I'd imagine. Right now, Gamespot is 14% lower than the average for Origins, but they were 16% higher for Syndicate.

The reviews mentioned here would indicate that Origins is off to a great start. It doesn't sound like Ubisoft re-invented the wheel or anything but then again with a franchise as big and popular as Assassin's creed they may feel they don't really need to.
