Assassin's Creed Movie Will Break History of Video Game Film Mediocrity, Ubisoft Says

"There is always a first."

Video game movies have a track record of mediocrity and worse. But Ubisoft believes its upcoming film based on Assassin's Creed could break through and become a hit.

Ubisoft's Azaizi Aymar, who is the head of content for the Assassin's Creed brand, spoke up on Twitter to respond to a suggestion that "movies based on video games have and never will work."

Aymar doesn't see it that way. As an example, he pointed to how movies based on comic books didn't always have the critical and commercial standing they have today. Like comic book movies, video game films will get better, and Assassin's Creed could be the film to prove that, he argued.

Aymar is not alone in thinking video game movies will eventually get better. Adrian Askarieh, who produced last summer's Agent 47, which was one of the worst-reviewed video game movies of all time, said earlier this year the key to making better video game movies is to involve the creators.

"Marvel became Marvel once they started creating their own movies," he said. "I think the way to do video game movies is, number one, have filmmakers that are passionate about them and know them; they're fans, they're not just looking at it as a job. And also have developers and publishers involved."

Ubisoft has established an internal film division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, to develop films alongside Hollywood production companies. Ubisoft was apparently quite involved in the production of Assassin's Creed to ensure it was staying true to the game franchise.

Assassin's Creed's first trailer came online last week. The response was generally positive, though not everyone was pleased with its use of Kanye West's "I Am A God."

The film has a deep roster of talent attached to it. Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender plays the lead role, alongside Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons, and Michael Kenneth Williams. It is directed by Justin Kurzel, who also directed Fassbender and Cotillard in Macbeth.

Additionally, with no new mainline Assassin's Creed game coming out this year, the film's marketing team has more space and opportunity to promote the picture, according to Ubisoft.

Assassin's Creed opens on December 21, a week after Star Wars spinoff Rogue One comes out. Fox reportedly has plans for two sequels. "It's not a one-off," producer Pat Crowley recently said. "Everybody expects that this movie will continue."

A new poster has also been released; check it out below.

No Caption Provided

You won't have to wait until December to see a video game movie, however, as Angry Birds comes out this Friday, May 20. The movie already opened in some international markets, bringing in $43 million, which is ahead of The Lego Movie for its initial opening. Additionally, Legendary's Warcraft, which is based on Blizzard's popular PC game, comes out in June.

For more on Assassin's Creed, check out GameSpot's interview feature, "Michael Fassbender on Why Assassin's Creed Will Matter to Moviegoers."

In other news about video game movies, Nintendo has announced it is in discussions with multiple partners to produce films based on its franchises. No projects have been announced, but CEO Tatsumi Kimishima is not interested in a simple licensing deal. He said he wants Nintendo to be more heavily involved than the company was in the production of 1993's poorly received live-action Super Mario Bros.

Though not everyone was pleased with its use of Kanye West's "I Am A God.", abit of an understatement there, everyone apart from Kanye and the idiot who put the music on the trailer thought it was shit

like video game moves most anime based movies are terrible. so far only Rurouni Kenshin (the live action movie) is any decent film that is actaully close to the proper source material. films like dbz evolution and avatar the last air bender are some of thee worst movies ever made and i hate to see some games be destroyed by that level of movie creation thoes films have made.

I still think there is a great video game movie out there that is waiting to be made. I'm just not sure Assassin's Creed is it. For a video game movie to do well, it has to do the things that other great movies do: weave an interesting tale with characters you care about. It cannot be just pure spectacle.

I have low expectations so we shall see. imo Mortal kombat was the 1st good video game movie (although it hasn't aged well).

@hampton2003: In what way hasn't it aged well? I think Mortal Kombat still holds up as what it was intended to be: a campy action flick.

I wonder how many patches the theaters will have to download to make the movie watchable?

Also, will the audience be required to log in/register a uplay account prior to viewing?

The article that claimed 65% of the movie will be present and 35% of the movie is history tells me otherwise. Just like the games I'm sure the peak of your interests will be in the past portions while the present is boring and mundane while trying to be secretive and interesting. Mix that with the liberties they took on the look of the animus and I'm sure they'll destroy this with their neat inventive ideas to make it appeal to a movie audience. Sat what you like Ubisoft, I have a very bad feeling about this; like Resident Evil movie bad.

The people who did reviews on Hitman: Agent 47 are all idiots. That movie was good. I dont understand why movies have to be big action or comedy movies to review well. Who in the heck are these reviewers.

@kentray1985: I can't disagree on that. I rather be proven wrong if it turns out good. History had shown that nearly most weren't successful even if few we're good. You cannot blame for this thinking due to history itself. Would it be as successful as Mortal Kombat 1? Or would it suffer as bad as Final Fantasy Spirits Within? It is time to witness it when the movie arrives and see how well it goes for both the film and financially.

@Xandagar: Yeah I wait to watch movies or play games myself now because reviews are sorely based off opinions. No one knows what kind of games or movies I like but me and most reviewers are critical on movies and games because its their job to do so even if the critical points doesnt necessarily bother them personaly.

Err, Silent Hill was a pretty good game to movie adaptation imo. Apart from a few changes they really nailed the atmosphere of the game down hard and freaking pyramid head!

After yesterday's report that it would be 80% modern day I suspect it will be cheap trash with a good actor who isn't allowed to show his talents. It's just a guess, though.

They also said Hitman Agent 47 would be the movie to break the flop trend...I'll admit the trailer looked good minus the weird robot arm take on the animus. Maybe this will actually be decent since the writers are claiming to work hard with ubisoft to get the present day plot line and character design right.

@Jew1: You need only look at the trajectory of the games to know that Ubisoft's writers getting involved will not make anything better. They couldn't make the present day plot line work in the games, now it's gonna suddenly be good?

eddie enough with the PR bullshit. they already said 70 percent will take place in the modern day and the AC games are all really about the past so i dont really see how it will be that great. how about instead of making article after article about a game producer or movie maker saying "this will be the best game/movie ever" lets let it stand on its on and not hype it up ok? thanks.

I want this to be true. I really do.

Ubisoft and Nintendo making their own movies could do to video game movies what Marvel did to comic book movies. But I just can't believe it until the movies come out and prove it.

1st the trailer releases with that terrible soundtrack (takes away from the AC experience IMO)

2nd they announce 65%+ of the movie will be based in modern times. (admit it you hate the parts of AC games where it takes you back to Desmond or Animus scenes) Why would I like it in the movie?

I've purchased every singe Assassin's Creed game to date (except for mobile games) and have decided I won't be seeing this. I'm also a huge fan of Michael Fassbender's work for goodness sakes!! Just feel like they took the complete wrong direction here

Ubisoft would say something like that.

That director is right about getting the original devs involved, though. Hopefully, Sony realizes the best way to make an Uncharted movie is to let Naughty Dog handle the script and storyboarding. Heck, just let them animate the movie. Then again, these are the same people behind the Ratchet & Clank disaster.
