Assassin's Creed Anime Series Coming From Castlevania Showrunner Adi Shankar

The Dredd, Lone Survivor producer is working on Assassin's Creed next.

[UPDATE] Assassin's Creed head of content Azaizia Aymar confirmed on Twitter that Ubisoft is involved with the project. He also shared some little details.

The original story is below.

Hollywood producer Adi Shankar (Dredd, Lone Survivor, The Voices, and more) today announced his next project--and it's for one of the biggest franchises in gaming. The 32-year-old producer revealed that he's working on an Assassin's Creed anime series.

It is based on Ubisoft's massively popular stealth-action franchise, but it will tell an entirely original story. There is no word as of yet regarding its title, premiere date, network, or cast. Ubisoft itself has yet to say if it is involved in the production.

Those details will come later down the road; it sounds like the project is still relatively early in the production process.

Shankar is a big fan of the Assassin's Creed series, and he says he was floored to get the opportunity to work on the new Assassin's Creed anime. "If anyone tells you not to follow your passion in life, they are wrong," Ankar said.

"I played the first edition of Assassin's Creed the year I moved to Los Angeles," he added. "At that moment, I knew absolutely no one in the industry and could never have imagined that one day, Ubisoft would ask me to take the world of Assassin's Creed and create an original anime story set in it as an anime series."

He is the showrunner for the Castlevania Netflix series, which premieres this week, on July 7.

Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest on the new Assassin's Creed anime.

In March this year, Assassin's Creed head of content Aymar Azaizia confirmed that an Assassin's Creed TV series was happening, but until we did not know much about it, if this is indeed the series in question. Last year, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said the company was in talks with Netflix for a series, but he did not say which Ubisoft property might be spun into a show. It's possible Assassin's Creed--one of Ubisoft's biggest and most recognizable brands--is the franchise in question.

This year's big Assassin's Creed game, Assassin's Creed Origins, comes out in October for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. A mobile game called Assassin's Creed Rebellion is also on the way.

Here is Shankar's full statement:

This won't be the first time the Assassin's Creed series has extended to circles beyond gaming. Fox produced a live-action Assassin's Creed movie last year starring Michael Fassbender. The Justin Kurzel-directed film apparently made more than $240 million worldwide and is reportedly getting multiple sequels.

I'm rather excited for this, even if I quit playing them a long time ago. Done well AC could really work in the anime medium.

Been a fan of The Creed since 07 and looking forward to Origins later this year. This anime is a sweet surprise and hope it comes to Netflix here in Oz!

The movie in theaters should have been a anime from day one... less money needed and you could explain thing in better detail

I guess there are enough people still interested in AC to keep it going. I'm sort of worn out on the whole thing.

@snugglebear: Same, I left at Black Flag. I have to say though I'm hoping Origins changes that. It seems different enough to make me want to play it.

@Destructionzz: I suppose it could be. The setting looks interesting, but arenas in stealth games...

That’s all well and good that Assassins creed is getting the same treatment but let’s just wait and see how Castlevania does first.

@magnusopus: everyone has a right to their opinion......so go frack off and badger people who give a F about yours.....go get hit by a greyhound bus yourself chief....

what if you were seeing the same 3 games you despise for a decade then they started in throwing crap movies out there based on em?? that's where I'm coming from.....it's called oversaturation of a brand and it's what's killing games....but nevermind that, let's just silence differing opinions cus we're so numb to the truth......

i comment on things that either interest me, or stuff I like or things I hate.....cus to stay silent on things you hate is being part of the problem......also blindly defending things simply to come off looking like you're in the right is just stupid......

@darthrevenx: Wow you really contradicted yourself in your own comment. Started out by saying everyone has an opinion then start stating your own opinion as fact. You also seem to think your "right to an opinion" means that an equal "right to accept your opinion" exists, which it doesn't. Clearly, you seem to think that someone is going to actually take your "opinion" on board but you are sorely mistaken. If your original opinion had been more well thought out and articulated (I hope you understand what that means), you might have got a more nuanced response, as someone who qualifies movies and games as "crap" and "things I hate" will never be taken seriously.

Also, you should never assume that someone is "blindly defending things" and that they are "stupid" for doing so, because they could easily come back and imply that you are doing the exact same thing ;) ;)

But hey, that's just my opinion.
