As Rocket League Turns One, PS4 Remains Its Most Popular Platform

1.1 million people still play daily.

Rocket League is officially one year old, and developer Psyonix has marked the occasion with an infographic running down some of its impressive milestones.

The game has attracted more than 18 million player total, who have taken part in 545 million matches. 6.2 million copies of the game have been sold, with 5.5 million DLC packs to go along with it. PS4 remains the game's top platform--perhaps thanks in part to it launching in July 2015 as a free PlayStation Plus game--with Xbox One and PC both tied. An average of 1.1 million players still play every day.

You can see more facts in the infographic below, including which vehicles and customization items have proven the most popular.

"We debated for quite some time what the best way to show you our gratitude was," Psyonix wrote on its website, "until we realized that the answer was to keep doing what you want us to do--to keep supporting the game with new arenas, new garage items, new game modes, and new DLC; to experiment with more Rocket Labs and to increase our presence in the world of competitive gaming.

"And so that's exactly what we're going to do. We're going to make our next 52 weeks even better than our first. We're going to give you all the things we mentioned above and then we're going to give you some more, because you deserve it. You're our community and you're our friends."

A physical release of Rocket League just recently launched, as did a major update with lots of new content. Meanwhile, Psyonix is prepared to allow PS4 and Xbox One players to play against one another (as they can with those on PC), but that will first require an arrangement between Sony and Microsoft.

I get this feeling the reason Sony doesn't want cross play is the potential to prove the subscription fee for online multiplayer is a scam. However, MS has taken the steps to make it known. Before anyone asks how is it a scam, I'll explain. MS can be hosting the game or someone else could. If it is MS, they're making people who play the game on PC feel like VIPs over the people who bought their console in this regard. If it is another party, MS has no right to charge for online multiplayer period. I've also heard various lame excuses like console gamers are using their connections. Here's the problem with that, data has to travel both ways, which means that PC gamers would also be using those same connections without paying to use them.

Of course the Ps4 is the most popular platform to play the game. That's because barely anyone bought an Xbox one.

@7tizz: compared to ps4 it is. Microsoft hasn't sold 21 million Xbox ones either. They don't release those numbers because it's embarrassing. About 20 million shipped and about 10 million of them collecting dust in warehouses because they can't be sold.

So in general minimum 95% who play it on PS4 are freeloaders and paid no cent to get game and cheer up indie devs :)

@wexorian: Anyone who preordered a Steam controller would have gotten it for free too. This would have included me if Gamespot hadn't screwed up the email address. I bought the game anyway though. I figured it might be something my cousins would enjoy that is more than just two players.

Impressive Xbox numbers given that it came out in February and the game was never free. It matches PC which is hard to believe.

@effinjay: As an Xbox gamer, I dont see how that matters? The game is great and should be played on cross platform for all systems.

@wexorian: It came out on PC and PS4 on the same day, and was a PS+ title that very month. Also, the original game (Supersonic Acrobat Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars) was a PS3 game. Nothing you said is true, or makes any sense.

@mddg_mmcc: His statement is somewhat true, just not very clear. The game started on the PC platform - I was playing the RL Alpha in the summer of 2014, but it had actually started in February 2014. The PS4 version might have been planned, but the game started on PC. Also, during the initial couple of months post-release, the server fees were being paid mostly with the money generated from PC sales - Psyonix themselves have said is. So yes, the PC platform was the foundation of the RL success, although the PS+ version was what made the game really popular.

@bwats84: Exactly. The game being "free" on PS+ actually helped the game and company out more than anything. Word of mouth really works. If it weren't for it being on PS+, I highly doubt it ever gets an Xbox One release, much less them making millions of dollars.

Nice to see an indie dev having so much success. Reminds me that I still need to go buy the retail copy to show support for physical releases.

@psxp-one: RIP both the English language, and your reading comprehension.

That 1.1 million is across all 3 platforms, and it's a daily active player count, NOT a combined sales number, as you seem to think it is. Sales numbers are many times that.
