In a new interview, Midsommar and Beau is Afraid director Ari Aster revealed his next film will be a western.

Aster's new film, Beau Is Afraid--which stars Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix--is out in just under a month, but the horror director is already thinking about his next project. In an interview with the New York Times, Aster spoke alongside Phoenix about the film, and what it was like working together. Interestingly, Aster shared that his next film after Beau Is Afraid will "almost certainly" be a western, a big departure from his usual horror affair--presuming he doesn't blend the two genres together, that is.

Aster didn't go into any more detail than that, though it was implied that Phoenix would also be involved with this project. Speaking about working with Phoenix, Aster said that the more than 60 days of shooting was the "best experience" of his life. "But it also taught me how I want to work in the future--the seriousness with which I expect an actor to approach any given part."

The first trailer for Beau Is Afraid arrived earlier this year, and promises a surrealist horror film set in an alternate present. Phoenix plays the titular character Beau, who makes a journey home after his overbearing mother dies.

Beau Is Afraid releases in cinemas April 21.
