Aquaman 2 Release Date Announced, But You'll Have To Wait A While
Swimming into theaters in 2022.
The DC blockbuster Aquaman now stands as the studio's most successful movie ever, with a worldwide box office gross of $1.13 billion since its release in December last year. It has now been confirmed that Aquaman 2 will arrive in 2022.
As reported by Variety, Aquaman 2's release date is set for December 16, 2022 (similar to the first movie's December 21 release). The first movie's writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will return to the write the sequel's script, while Aquaman director James Wan is to produce the new movie. While there's no word on casting as yet, Jason Momoa is certain to return in the title role.
Aquaman was the first DC release in over a year, following the commercial disappointment of 2017's Justice League. But while fans now have to wait nearly four years for the character's next film, the studio has a packed slate of movies on the way.
April will see the release of Shazam!, while the Joker prequel movie is set to hit theaters in November. The Suicide Squad spin-off Birds of Prey arrives in February 2020, with Wonder Woman 1984 releasing in July next year. Beyond that, dates have also been announced for The Batman and the James Gunn-written Suicide Squad reboot, both of which will release in 2021.
It has also been reported that DC is developing a horror spin-off from Aquaman, titled The Trench. That movie will also be produced by Wan, but no release date, cast, or director have been announced yet.
