Apple denies paying EA to delay Plants vs. Zombies 2 on Android

Spokesperson for iPhone company says recent report of Apple paying "truckload of money" to have EA delay Android version of free-to-play game is "not true."

Apple did not pay Electronic Arts a "truckload" of money to delay free-to-play game Plants vs. Zombies 2 on Android, a spokesperson told GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb today.

No Caption Provided

The spokesperson said no money was exchanged.

Apple's statement comes after Giant Bomb reported today that the Cupertino, California technology giant paid for Plants vs. Zombies 2 to be an iOS-exclusive at launch.

"Apple gave us a truckload of money to delay the Android version [of Plants vs Zombies 2]," EA Labels president Frank Gibeau reportedly said today during a town hall meeting.

This quote was confirmed to Giant Bomb by "several" sources who attended Gibeau's presentation today.

Giant Bomb contacted PopCap Games to confirm, but a spokesperson stated that, "we can't comment on internal meetings."

Plants vs. Zombies 2 launched in July as an iOS-exclusive and has been downloaded nearly 25 million times to date. The game is available on Android in China, where it is outselling the iOS version six-to-one, according to Gibeau.

The Android version of Plants vs. Zombies will be released across the world in a month or two, Gibeau said.

Microsoft doesn't have many games made by their own studios. Instead they throw "truckloads" of money at Developers/Publishers for the exclusive rights to their games and content.

Sony and Nintendo do it to a lesser extent since they both have large pools of high quality first party developers.

If Apple was to make a move like this it wouldn't be surprising.

I've played it. I like it. Similar to the first, and I liked that one, too.

More work went into that trailer than ever went into the game itself. Always very telling.

This kind of practice is the fault of the people. i mean if people really did not like these practices which i don't. they would not of brought the ps 1 as that was riddle with this kind of practice. one of many reasons i did not ever buy a ps 1. i am not into sleazy tactics like this put together with hype machines.

Actually, this started on the NES, and was precisely the reason it was so successful.

Well, consoles work like that too, so it was a matter of time before it happened in the mobile space.

tbh, I played the original on PC, plan to play it on the pc again, so call me when it hits Steam. :)

I don't get why they (Apple) would want a timed exclusive on a free to download game anyway? Do Apple get a cut of the micro transactions? I thought all those proceedings would go directly into EA pockets?

It's not just the microtransactions, but platform sales. I was watching a Let's Player (NintendoCapriSun) who actually took his android phone back to the store to exchange for an IPhone just so he could play this game.

@ScouseNineSix IF memeory serves, Apple takes a 30% cut of everything sold in their store. Micro-transactions included.

It is the same (or at least similar) in every online store, whoever runs it gets a cut from anything sold there. Steam, Sony (PSN) , Microsoft (Marketplace) and so forth.

Im pretty sure apple gets a cut of the profits from apps on app store and you you can make a game free but the generally means its ad supported or has microtrasnactions which once again im sure apple is getting a cut.

If it weren't true, Apple would be filing suit against Frank Gibeau and/or EA. Their inaction is consistent with his claim.

It wouldn't have caused any controversy if they admitted to timed release agendas as it's nothing new in the industry. So why exactly did they do it? most likely the fact that droid users want a phone with themes, are the general buyer and don't pay up as compared to ios. Not to mention that they could have released the ios version before the android build was ready to be shipped.

@arqe not really. Nobody pays to get a game delayed oin the competition. They pay , in advance, to get timed exclusives at launch, legally and openly. Not to delay something that was already announced for both. There is a difference.

@TigusVidiks @arqe Isn't "timed exclusive" just another way of saying "delayed release on other platforms"? I honestly don't understand what the difference is.

Both of those activities require the exact same action from the parties involved, and they result in the exact same outcome. So can you please enlighten us on the difference?

Both EA and Apple are "evil" companies so I'm actually inclined to believe money was exchanged regardless of what they may say. Greed rules all, unfortunately.

Ok... who cares if they did? Apple paid to gain exclusivity rights temporarily, though in a less direct way than how, say Microsoft, would approach a timed exclusivity agreement. Not a big deal. I'm just wondering where the hell my console version is. Hell, I'll even take a W8/WP8 version so I can get it on my laptop. Big fan of the first one on my 360 and I have zero interest in Call of Plants vs Zombies.
