Apple denies paying EA to delay Plants vs. Zombies 2 on Android

Spokesperson for iPhone company says recent report of Apple paying "truckload of money" to have EA delay Android version of free-to-play game is "not true."

Apple did not pay Electronic Arts a "truckload" of money to delay free-to-play game Plants vs. Zombies 2 on Android, a spokesperson told GameSpot sister site Giant Bomb today.

No Caption Provided

The spokesperson said no money was exchanged.

Apple's statement comes after Giant Bomb reported today that the Cupertino, California technology giant paid for Plants vs. Zombies 2 to be an iOS-exclusive at launch.

"Apple gave us a truckload of money to delay the Android version [of Plants vs Zombies 2]," EA Labels president Frank Gibeau reportedly said today during a town hall meeting.

This quote was confirmed to Giant Bomb by "several" sources who attended Gibeau's presentation today.

Giant Bomb contacted PopCap Games to confirm, but a spokesperson stated that, "we can't comment on internal meetings."

Plants vs. Zombies 2 launched in July as an iOS-exclusive and has been downloaded nearly 25 million times to date. The game is available on Android in China, where it is outselling the iOS version six-to-one, according to Gibeau.

The Android version of Plants vs. Zombies will be released across the world in a month or two, Gibeau said.

Apple has lost the HW/specs war, o turning back to that.

So they have now focused on the software, because they dont really have some exclusive tools, like in the Mac business.

Their best bet is to imply restrictions, in order to ensure better fluidity and try to convince everyone that this is the only that matters.

And of course because of the certain specs, display and premium market they are holding, maintain, at any cost, the supremacy in gaming.

There was apparently no reason for EA, to holf off the game for Android, they want to make money, the more fanbase they have, the more potential clients they have.

Being a very popular game, its a prestigious advantage for the platform that keeps it, its a demonstration of superiority and Apple's strategy thrives on such tactics...

This is like hiding your valuables in a hole you dug and then placing a sign saying "go away, there is no treasure here". Shame cause Apple would have been much better off remaining quite yet they had to spill the beans now we all know these two moron companies are in bed together...

Who cares its a shameless pay to win cash grab anyway and EA fired George Fan which is bad enough but they then proceeded to make Plants VS Zombies 2 an unimaginative Disneyfied time travel romp with mummies and Pirates of the Caribbean zombies, which at first glance seems like a good fit but its neither original or surprising nor does it have quite the same feel as the originals suburban quirkiness. and the new plants are lazily conceived "Boomerang Plant" !?!?

The reports of a 'truckload' are untrue, it was more like a metric f**kton.

Of course they did, this is exactly the kind of thing they'd do, but they're not dumb enough to admit it.

Its obvious that is what happened. That guy of course said it and got caught by accident so of course denies it now, but the truth is they did delay it.

Deny it all you want. Why would someone purposely toss out over double the potential users for absolutely no reason? Apple did something for it, maybe jumped in bed with EA, who knows.

This is the same crap that Microsoft did to Sony back with the early CoD's. Hate them for making this a norm in the industry.

It sounds like just the sort of sleazy thing Apple would do, and just the sort of greedy thing EA would do.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Apple is the corporate wolf. They would strangle the competition with their cold lifeless shiny hands if they could.

Seriously? This story is too bogus to believe..... yet....

But its more believable to say that PvZ 2 is a Timed Exclusive.

I'm just gonna wait for it to be released on Steam.

They didn't pay to keep it off Android, they paid to keep it exclusive to Apple. Same thing, different wording.

You did it, Apple. We all know you did it. What I want to know is why you didn't shell out even more cash for a non-disclosure agreement on the matter.

If Apple did pay all this money and EA willingly took it, why did they think it was a good idea to going around telling everybody? Way to go, EA. No wonder The Consumerist labeled you the worst company in America for the past two years. Idiots.

PvZ2 is actually really fun. I'm probably about half way through so far, and haven't spent a penny on it. The only way I could see needing to spend money is if you totally suck or are so impatient that you want to skip levels. But if you're skipping content why the hell are you playing in the first place.

Anyway, Popcap won't get any of my money until the full game (non-F2P version) comes out on PC.

Of course Apple paid them to delay. Why else would PopCap delay a version that would generate a great amount of revenue? Because Apple gave them a lot of money to delay.

It doesn't matter. I don't have either types of devices to download this game. I do want to play it though. I feel a little left out in that regard, too.

I downloaded and played through this game for FREE though... It's not going to make apple nor EA any money. Sorry to say it didn't have the same feel as the original either, finished and put away:(

Being in law school, the fact that Apple is so quick to deny this information leads me to believe that, if they in fact did so, there will be legal ramifications. It may come down to contract issues, and Android may be able to find a breach of contract with EA if this is true. While so many people are turning to the fact that MS, Nintendo, and Sony have exclusives all the time, it all comes down to if it was allowed by contract. Apple doesn't seem to have such exclusivity; therefore, they possibly are worried about a leak of bad faith on their and EA's part. If Apple did have exclusivity, they would likely brag about it and market it as "Coming to Apple First," or something along those lines.

@TheTNWrestler Legal ramifications? Not likely. It's even worse that than that. It would be perception and image ramifications.

@rawkstar007 @TheTNWrestler I sincerely doubt that Apple will face major image ramifications. It's all about the money in the court rooms, not so much in the public eye. I doubt very much that an average consumer would care one way or the other. They would just download the free game and the litigation would not be mentioned.

@TheTNWrestler @rawkstar007 Don't get me wrong. Apple will survive but their desire to cut into Android's and other competitor's market share could take a hit from something like this. Not major money but Apple doesn't want to lose ANY money if it can help it.

EA took the cash cuz it was probably more than what the game would generate in revenue anyways.

MS did it with Minecraft, Titanfall probably etc. Sony probably promised exposure and smaller fees to the bigger profile indies. It happens all the time.

@Joeguy00 @Diegoctba Exactly, so what if they paid them? It happens all the time. M$ does it, Sony does it, Nintendo, somehow managed to get Bayonetta for themselves. It's nothing personal, just business.

@ahpuck Yep, people pay each other off all the time... But then again, just because it happens, doesn't make it a good thing that everyone should get used to... It's bad for consumers and there's more useful things that they could be spending money on.

Aren't the Android OSs well-known for being developer-friendly? I mean, there are seemingly countless applications actually made by single people. So it seems like *something* had to hold them back on the development process... Not that I particularly care. By the sounds of it, EA butchered PvZ with its usual money-grubbing ways.
