Another report says Xbox also getting virtual reality/augmented reality device

Sources say Microsoft's new virtual reality/augmented reality effort aims to create a "suite of experiences unique to Microsoft's Xbox products."

All eyes are on Sony this week as the company is rumored to announce a virtual reality device for the PlayStation 4 tomorrow at the Game Developers Conference. But Microsoft might not be far behind with its own 3D virtual reality technology.

Multiple sources familiar with Microsoft's plans told The Wall Street Journal that the Xbox maker has also developed 3D virtual reality devices and has even filed at least one patent so far.

This technology is concurrently in development with a mysterious VR/AR project revealed in 2012 as "Fortazela," which is reportedly similar to Google Glass. The Wall Street Journal says that Microsoft's efforts in the virtual reality space represent an attempt to create a "suite of experiences unique to Microsoft's Xbox products."

In addition, the sources go on to explain that one iteration of Microsoft's new technology was focused on augmented reality--that is, a technology that can layer animation on top of imagery from the real-world. By comparison, virtual reality devices like Oculus Rift only displays CG (computer generated) images.

Sony is rumored to announce its own VR device for the PS4 tomorrow during a "future of gaming" panel. GameSpot will be in attendance and will have all the news as it happens.

It would have been great to get that illumiroom projector thing.. But MS said it would cost way to much to mass produce and not only that but development support for multi plat games would be an issue. They need to do something cool with Kinect because as of now its not even what I would call relevant to the console itself. I am not sure what the Fortaleza project is but I think its AR glasses that will coincide with connect?

I want that projector add one they talked about a few months ago. that makes your whole room active in the game. a good waste of 500 bucks for a projector. lol

Would love if they just started to support 3D gaming properly. When done right, it's a great experience. Like Uncharted 3.

Trine 2 on PS4 supports 3D and is absolutely beautiful. I hope both Sony and Microsoft's new gimmick supports 3D televisions without the device.

When the Wii launched with motion tracking, Sony and Microsoft eventually came up with their own takes on that feature and now it seems like history is repeating itself, but with VR being the new trend. Sure, Sony made VR tech before the Oculus Rift was announced, but there was never much fuss about it and I didn't even realize they existed before people talked about the competition the Oculus Rift faces.

I've never heard of any motion-based games that are any good, so I think it would be better to improve them first before jumping on another trend that might never amount to much.

MS already has patents for a VR set. The project was called Fortaleza, before anyone comes in here claiming they "copied".

Why are people scared of change? Money, it's simple, the people who slag this stuff off cannot afford it. That is a valid reason, no one likes to be left behind, but the real people who do not care just stay quiet and carry on as they please.

virtual reality, LOL why bother when they can't even get 1080p resolution... ?

V.R is so overrated its ridiculous. It's the same with Occulus rift. In the end nothing can beat keyboard and mouse superiority for visual movements.

I'd love a virtual reality lap dance, who wouldn't, but that's about all that tech is good for.

3D, the Power Glove, Motion control, virtual reality, camera's...these are all useless extra's and peripherals that have been tried and rejected numerous times. And for some reason companies continue to try and reinvent this garbage and attempt to shove it down gamers throats for the almighty dollar.

@Gravity_Slave Most of those things failed because the tech was not at the right spot yet. The vast majority of people who tried OR seem to be happy with it´s performance.

3D movies have a long history of failure, but in the last years the tech got closer and truth is many 3D movies today are a box office hits.

Kinect, in theory, it's also an interesting tech to use in combination with VR. But, sadly, all the demos I've seen made it look as something that´s not yet at a desirable level. That lag makes it almost useless for VR IMO.

But, in the end, peoples choices is what make a product viable. And probably 99% of the things we use today, at some point, were seen as useless gimmicks.

funny how all these sony lovers bash ms about this. and that this is already ruled as a failed project. they were saying the same thing last gen about how much better move was gonna be because it was a better version of the wii controls.and ms was sooo stupid for trying to use kinect instead of just copying the wii. turned out kinect was better and ms stuck with their idea and sony just dropped move like it was nothing and the sony lovers had nothing but a few nurf cannons and a few glow sticks and a bunch of sport demo games/psn games. sad thing is most of these sony lovers already have high end pcs. i dont know why they are so hyped about sony`s rip off . when they can just go out and buy a rift.. thats almost as bad as paying 50X2 for 2 move controllers.then 40X2 for two numchucks then 40 for the ps3 eye cam instead of just buying a wii and being able to every game wirth those type of controls plus all nintendo`s best games. least with ms`s idea u will get something different. and they will stick with it and not just send out a first wave then just dump it like sony does with ideas that dont take off in their favor

I can't take this seriously coming from a company that releases a voice-command entertainment center and then releases a remote some months after.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i can say i am a gamer that plays various game genres but i also like the kinect titles. they are really good when you want to get out of the regular button pressing and sitting in one spot. plus it provides a good, frendlier, approach to people who are not familiar with video games at all. Even though it's not perfect and gets frustrating at times it still is a blast to play with. I've no idea why people have so much hate for this device which has a lot of potential and provides a new way to experience games. The only downside i see with it is that there isn't even one company yet to take a risk and create a richer experience on the kinect apart from the casual games that get out for it, especially now since all xbone owners have it.

@HowlPendragon @shinjuki Gamers make up a small piece of the pie in society..... How else do you explain COD selling like it does? whether i like it or not the casual is a big piece of the puzzle, is not hard to understand why they went the route they did. Neither console are as next gen as I would like, but your gimmick is the next mans gold. There are lots who love kinnect, I dont think it should of been manditory but none the less millions of people didnt mind.

My DS4 has a touch pad a speaker and bright blue led that eats the battery.... bit of a gimmick there also if you ask me.

This definitely has gimmick written all over it. The Oculus Rift is the only product so far that shows real promise on the VR front. But at least Sony already has some of this tech in place so theirs has some potential even if it won't be any where close to what the Rift will offer. But what has Microsoft ever done in this area? Nothing that I've seen that would apply to the gaming community. Can't imagine they're doing anything that will be anything but a mild attempt to grab some of the VR money that is bound to get spread around in the coming months.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think the goal with VR in general is to trick your mind into thinking you are actually in the game.

A perfect example is when I played TFII with an OR, It would trick my mind into thinking Im in the game. One example is jumping off of something tall and getting the falling feeling in your stomach when you fall in real life. (thats what i felt anyway when i did that for the first time)

@notfrylock1987 I get that same feeling sometimes when I fall off a bridge or a high building in a first-person game without expecting it.

You don't need VR for that, it's called immersion.

a "suite of experiences unique to Microsoft's Xbox products." Meaning its going to be used for a bunch of proprietary garbage just like the Kinect. Not saying that the sony headset won't be the same, no one knows. But thats what the sentence seems to imply.
