Now Playing: Another Persona 5 Announcement Coming This Month - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Persona developer Atlus has announced there's more Persona 5 news to share later this month, on April 25. Atlus didn't offer any specific clues regarding what to expect, though, other than the name "P5S."

Atlus has already announced a new version of the RPG for PS4 called Persona 5 The Royal, but this has its own website with "P5R" in the URL. This suggests that P5S is something separate from the PS4's Persona 5 The Royale. Much of the speculation for what it could be has been around a Nintendo Switch version of Persona 5, and the "S" in the URL no doubt fuels that fire. Coincidentally or not, Persona 5 on PS4 recently saw a price drop to $20. There's also the possibility of a fighting game spin-off, like we saw with Persona 4.

No Caption Provided

Thus far, Persona 5 has only been released on PlayStation hardware. Alongside the PS4 version, however, there's a PS3 version, which could be suitable for porting to the Switch. Additionally, Atlus and Nintendo are already working together to bring Joker, the protagonist of Persona 5, to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a playable DLC character.

In February, Nintendo confirmed it is working on update 3.0 for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but didn't say what it'll include. Nintendo added that Joker would be released for the game before the end of April. With this in mind, the use of "1 More" on the website could also be significant. In Persona 5 the phrase is used when a player is given an opportunity to make an extra move as a bonus. Either way, we'll find out later this month.

Persona 5 originally launched in March, 2017 and received a 9/10 from GameSpot. In her Persona 5 review, Lucy James said, "Within Persona 5 is a complex set of interconnected gameplay mechanics, and in almost every aspect Atlus has executed on its vision exceptionally, barring the pacing issues towards the end."

She continued: "It's stuffed to bursting point with gameplay ideas and presentation flourishes--there's an overwhelming level of artistry in every part of Persona 5, making it a truly standout entry in the series. It's a refined, effortlessly stylish RPG that will be talked about for years to come."

Imagine being someone who thought even for a second that this wasn’t obviously referring to Joker in Smash lmao. Reminds me of all the people that somehow didn’t immediately figure out what months Smash DLC would be released in after watching the Direct in November last year.

Can't wait to find out what it is.

The S pretty much gives it away.

@soliaired50: A few weeks ago before the trailer of Persona 5 the royal, there was this info that persona 5 S would be released on PS4 and switch, so the S is not for switch.

@adsparky: So it can just stand for Persona 5 S to indicate that it's also for the PS lol.

Come on Switch port!

Sega wants the games on the PC, so a PC version at a later date is most likely the formula. I know it's in the pipeline for sure - the release date is the only question.

You're telling me Nintendo's ready to deal with issues like rape, suicide, extortion, art theft, arranged marriage, facism, detrimental effects of social media on the society as a whole and social reform?!

You ask me, Nintendo doesn't deserve Persona 5!

Let the Nintendo fans be happy with their fantasies of kids' games (like that abominable PQ) and nostalgia filled call-backs.

It's not like they were ever ready for growing up anyway.

@proceeder: Atlus has been releasing all SMT related games for Nintendo's handhelds ever since last gen. P5 is pretty much the only one they've released for consoles again. Oh yeah, and Catherine.

@proceeder: Nevermind Bayonetta essentially being a game about a stripper fighting demons.

@proceeder: Weird, I must have imagined playing south park the fractured but whole, Doom, and Wolfenstein II,on the switch last year.

Odd.

Must have been a dream...

Avatar image for proceeder

@Bread_or_Decide:You raise a good point.

At first glance, those games deal with several issues I mentioned.

However, Persona addresses a different audience. The game's more nuanced, and it makes the audience uncomfortable (this actually affected the game's critical reception).

For example: in Persona's world, an entire nation is angry with the status quo to the point that they're willing to vote for a candidate accused of attempted rape. The public opinion does not change when the accusations are proven true. Mementos is the collective consciousness of the masses that take the subway every day packed together to the jobs they don't care for. The art world does not believe in the value of creativity. The teacher abuses his power. The police are controlled by the corrupt government. God has lost hope for humanity and wishes for its destruction.

Despite all of that, the playable character (you) and his crew make an effort to reform the situation for the better.

Bethesda games (which I love) are just power fantasies with over-the-top violence (which is kicka$$) with clear borders between the forces of good and evil. Southpark, well, Southpark just makes fun of everything, and it is hard to take seriously (which is extremely fun).

I'm just not convinced Nintendo wants to deal with all Persona's dealing with (I also hate that they waste Atlus's time by funding those PQ games).

If Atlus is bringing Persona 5 to the Switch, it's pretty much an insta-buy from me.

Hoping it'll be the updated Royal version, or maybe even an enhanced version of that with Switch-exclusive features.

After the announcement of Persona 5 the Royal, it doesn't make sense this to be an extended version like Persona 4 Golden, it can be, but it wouldn't make sense; it's way safer to assume it's a spin-off, probably the fighting game of persona 5.

A switch version of Persona 5 makes sense, as it is a way for them to hedge their bets against Sony's draconian new censorship policies.

If Sony attempts to censor the PS4 version of Persona 5R, as they well may, at least fans have another option for an uncensored version on the switch.

Avatar image for proceeder

@goto0: You're complaining about Trish's A$$ being covered by a flare (which I think was patched out).

Persona addresses rape, suicide, corruption and much more.

I'm not convinced Nintendo won't censor the project that Sony supported for five years.

@proceeder: Yeah it was patched out! Thank God, I was worried it would stay.

I would buy a switch to play Persona 5 on the train and subway. My wallet is not ready for this...

Imagine how annoyed people will be if it's P5 Super Rumble, P5 Smash or P5 Super Star Racing lol. There is a good chance that this is actually an enhanced edition of Persona 5 with new confidants etc while Persona 5 The Royal is actually a sequel similar in style to the Persona 3 FES add on except it's a separate game this time.

@gamingdevil800: A racing game for Persona? Eeeehhh I really do not see that happening.

If it's Persona 5 for the Switch then it's a wrap. One of my favorite games of this gen. I put in over 500 hours with 50 of them probably just sitting there and just listening to the music.

Avatar image for Ovirew

@rasterror: so p5 is that good? Would you say it's better than p4g?

Avatar image for blkmac

@Ovirew: hm...Persona 4 def had a darker tone than 5. I feel 5 was more light hearted than 4 was and i hate that. But they're both amazing and i have to give 5 the crown over 4 because its 2019 and the dungeons in 4 r way too tedious for this time of games.

Avatar image for proceeder

@Ovirew: I would.

P5 is only topped by P2: IS and P3, IMO.

I think the timing and the name "P5S" all point to a Switch release of Persona 5. If that's not it, they're setting people up for disappointment which is probably not a good idea.

Avatar image for Sorrow_316

I hope it’s something for the Switch. I absolutely loved P4G on the Vita, cause I could play it anywhere.

Avatar image for Blk_Mage_Ctype

I doubt that it's a Switch Version of P5. If it was, then why didn't they just announce it alongside P5R for PS4? Honestly, given how many people were put off by the lack of P5 for Switch, you'd think that at the very least they would have announced it later that same day.

It's probably just some spinoff like a Fighting or Dancing game. That being said, I would love nothing more than to be wrong about this since I would love to own a portable version of P5, especially if it's an enhanced edition with additional content.

Avatar image for zmanbarzel

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: “why didn't they just announce it alongside P5R for PS4?”

To tie in with the marketing/promotion of Joker being released for Smash this month.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Maybe Sony requested they be separate announcements just as an act of good will between them.

@xantufrog: It took me years to jump on the Persona bandwagon, but I'm really glad I did.

I really like how the games give you the choice how you want to spend each "day", and build bonds with certain characters or work towards raising stats or buying equipment. Then you go into the dungeons and explore randomly-generated areas, and obtain new demons and spirits. It's pretty unique.
