Animal Crossing: New Horizons Free Autumn Update Adds Halloween Next Week

The spooky update will add Halloween costumes and decorations, DIY projects, and more.

Summer is over and fall is falling in the northern hemisphere, which means it's time for Animal Crossing: New Horizons to bring its autumn update. The free update is coming next week, September 30, and will add spooky Halloween-themed costumes and decorations among other items.

You'll be able to buy costumes like a mage's dress from the Able Sisters and stock up on candy at Nook's Cranny throughout October. You can trade your Nook Miles for body paint designs and colored eye contacts. Then on Halloween night all of your animal friends will be wearing costumes of their own. There will also be a Halloween party on October 31 after 5 PM in your town plaza, with a visit from Jack, the "czar of Halloween." Giving him candy will grant you special rewards.

The creepy-crawly holiday is the main attraction, but the update will also add other fall-themed items. You can plant pumpkins after buying your first starts from Leif, and he'll be carrying them year-round from now on. You can also buy the starts direct from Nook's Cranny during the month of October. Those pumpkins, along with acorns and pinecones that fall from trees, can be used in new DIY recipes.

Plus the update will make it streamline the process to revisit dreams. Previously visited dream islands will appear as part of a list, letting you venture back to them more easily. A NookLink update will let you use your smart device to perform in-game reactions.

As part of the announcement, Nintendo also noted that the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Edition Nintendo Switch is coming back to retailers. That was hard to find when it first released, so if you missed out the first time, now's your chance. Amiibo cards will also be returning to retailers starting in November.

Finally, in a separate tweet, Nintendo of America noted that all players who download the fall update will get a free RingCon item from the notoriously hard-to-find fitness game Ring Fit Adventures.
