Angry Birds 2 Passes 10 Million Downloads

New download milestone for Rovio's bird-flinging sequel.

Angry Birds 2 is off to a hot start. Developer Rovio has announced that the bird-flinging sequel has passed 10 million downloads since its release for mobile phones and tablets on July 29.

The entire Angry Birds franchise has tallied more than 1 billion downloads since it originally debuted in 2009.

Angry Birds 2 is a free-to-play game, so big download numbers are to be expected. Rovio did not share any information regarding how many of those 10 million players have spent real-world money on it.

In Angry Birds 2, your arsenal of birds takes the form of cards. When you use them up, you lose a life. After this, you can either wait for those lives to refill after using them up, or spend in-game currency to buy a few more chances. Another change for Angry Birds 2 is the environments, which now have a multi-area layout.

@Cryio: Need some depth and soul to my portable games, not 2-5 minutes of mental masturbation.

@40mdf0 our Red Game might not be too deep, but it's definitely challenging. Give it a shot.

Good for it. If a non game can make itself millions from idiots who call themselves gamers, then fine.

@kee1haul: It's a game, whether or not you think it's for casual gamers or whatever your problem is with it doesn't make it a "non game" I guess Pong is a "non game" I guess all classics like Breakout or Space Invaders are "non games because they simple controls and visuals.

Meh. Not my kind of game. I enjoy hidden object games. I know these games are meant for 5 year old little girls but whatever. They're relaxing. That's my kind of mild mobile entertainment.

If angry birds is free how do they make a profit? Are there micro transactions?

@camou504: Microtransactions and advertisements. I read that free to play games make more money than pay to play games. Crazy world we're living in...

The whole concept of arbitrary waiting times is something I've never understood. There are so many avenues for it to go wrong.

First of all, making people wait to play a game with the depth of a spoon and designed to not require long play sessions doesn't seem like that bad of a thing. Then again, if people actually want to play your game and you have arbitrary waiting times preventing them from doing so, then they never form that attachment to the game that you're ultimately looking for and therefore, who cares about spending money on it? Even worse, making people wait may actually turn them off because they had that initial interest to check the game out and now that you've forced them off, you may never get them to a point where they have enough interest to fire up the game again.

Not everybody forms a bond with a game their first half an hour to an hour in. I remember buying Borderlands and getting sick of it within the first hour. I came back to it months later and I don't know what it was the second time through but I finished it, ended up buying Borderlands 2, and I finished that too. The only reason I came back to Borderlands is because I was bored out of my mind and it was a game I actually paid for, so I was hoping to get my money's worth out of it. Free to play doesn't have the same kind of attachment where you sit through it (sometimes unwillingly) or come back to it to justify having spent money on it.

It's not a good thing to lose people who have never spent anything. That attachment needs to come before they lose interest, and forcing them off due to cooldowns seems completely counterproductive.

As dumb as Angry Birds is, and as BS as them adopting the "spend money or wait" thing at the very least there's actual game there. It's not some city builder where every single thing is a timer watcher. But it's pretty sad that the bar is so low for mobile games that that's the best thing I can say about it.

So, this article states that you have to spend in-game currency to buy more lives or just wait for the timer to get more. Is this in-game currency easy to come by? And how long is that timer that replenishes your "lives"?

That's one thing that has always kept me far, far away from mobile games... Having to wait for timers before being able to continue playing. Either that, or pay money. No thanks. I know and understand it's a "free" game, but with ads and everything else that requires real world money, it's just too much for me.

I don't feel like being under some kind of parental control where I can only play for a certain amount of time. That being said, good on them for getting to that 10 mil milestone. I'm sure it will continue climbing, but I won't be one of the people that adds to that number. I've played a few of the past Angry Birds games and could retry as much as I wanted to without being told I need to wait or cough up money before being able to continue playing.

@Spartan-1657: Make no mistake, this is not made for you, someone who wants to play something fun for as long as you want. This is made for fools tip tap tapping on their phones while driving or sitting on their toilets.

@Spartan-1657: its pretty damn stingy. Its kinda hard to lose lives, but then again people who play this are probably aren't as good as me or your per se. Waiting 30 minutes for one bar of health to recharge and to charge ppl money to refill it is quite disgusting in my book. If this game was $5 without the BS pay walls, then I would be content.

Vastly overrated and their merchandise are EVERYWHERE in Finland. You'd have a heart attack if you saw their prices.
