Andy Serkis On A Darker, More Emotionally Connected Batman

While Matt Reeves' upcoming movie, The Batman, may be delayed thanks to the global production shutdowns caused by COVID-19 (coronavirus), actors involved have been teasing hints about what fans can expect once movie-making resumes. Andy Serkis, who plays Bruce Wayne's loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth, sat down with LADbible to offer some new clues.

"It's very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce," Serkis said, "That's really at the centre of it. And it is a really exquisite script that Matt has written."

He also confirmed what Bruce Wayne himself, Robert Pattinson, had said in previous interviews about the tone and direction of The Batman being darker than previous films. "I would say that's not far from the truth," Serkis said.

As for Serkis's inspiration? He's looking for his own unique take on the character, despite standing in the shadows of greats like Michael Caine and Michael Gough. "[Caine] was fantastic. His Alfred was legendary, I couldn't even begin to go there, really. You find it for yourself. It's like playing these iconic roles in Shakespeare, you go back, you revisit them and you have to make it your own, and see what it is about the character that connects with you and your personal Venn diagram."

He went on to confirm that he was "halfway through" shooting his part in the film before the shutdown, and can't be certain how things will change, or if there will be any change at all, once production resumes.

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz, and Jeffery Wright. It hits theaters October 1, 2021.
