Ancestors is the first title from Desilets' new studio, Panache Digital Games. The studio was founded in 2014, so it's been a while to see the first title from the independent team.

"Our goal for Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is to provide an experience no player has ever lived before," Desilets said in a statement. "Our small team is creating an ambitious and immersive game with a unique setting that will captivate gamers of all types, and we look forward to players exploring our world later this year."

Ancestors is published by Private Division, which is the independent games label run by Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead parent publisher Take-Two Interactive.

A single-player, third-person exploration survival game, your journey in Ancestors begins as a hominid in Neogene Africa some 10 million years ago. Over time, you grow and literally evolve to the Australopithecus popularly known as Lucy. On your way to becoming Lucy, you'll learn new skills and abilities as you take the form of the next subspecies of hominid that would eventually become the human form of today. It is quite an ambitious concept, to say the least.

The assassins creed creator... is doing something original? This must be fake news.

No but really if this game is halfway decent I'll need to get it. I feel like creators in general should be rewarded for doing crazy off the wall stuff like this.

We still have to wait and see if they'll find a way to make it non-monotonous. With only the most basic tools (literally), I'm not sure how good the combat and quests will be.

Think it's a very interesting premise and it's cool how they are trying to implement things like "fear" and "dopamin" etc. I just hope it's not too long/grindy. I would be fine doing this for say 10 h. But if this is some grindy 30h + thing then I'm gonna have to decline. I will check howlongtobeat once it is out and then decide.

I like the concept, just not convinced that this idea is playable without it being largely fetch/gathering quests--a whole lotta monotonous chores to get to some profound and meaningful ending. Still am hopeful though.

So it's kind of like EVO? That game was pretty neat.

First saw Ancestors during The Game Awards 2018 and Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey has been on my radar for a long time. Totally looking forward to this on PC this August.

This reminds me of playing 'E.V.O.: Search for Eden' on the SNES. Fun game where you evolve your creature by choosing what type of upgrade they got.

@Xanthus179: E.V.O. was fun, so the concept has me interested. My only worry is that when a dev takes an ambitious concept and then says they'll make it appealing for "all types" of gamers, they end up with something like Spore where it fails to really catch on with any specific audience.

@NaturallyEvil: Ha! I almost mentioned Spore as well. I wasn't sure if that game ever really got fixed.
