Analyst: GTAIV could best Halo 3's debut

Janco Partners' Mike Hickey says Rockstar's latest could "conceivably" ship 9.5 million in the first week, more than twice Microsoft's 4.4 million.

In announcing Halo 3's first-week sales of $300 million, Microsoft called it "the fastest-selling video game ever." That record might be relatively short-lived, if a new report from Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey proves accurate.

Hickey attributes the success of Halo 3 to a growing fan base for the franchise, a general demand for high-quality content, and the game's release early in the current generation's life cycle. Those same factors will be playing into next year's release of Grand Theft Auto IV, Hickey said. In addition, the Xbox 360 installed user base will be significantly larger by the time GTA IV comes out, and the addition of a PlayStation 3 edition of the game should boost sales significantly as well. Putting those factors together, Hickey suggests that the market is generally underestimating the next GTA game's initial success.

With Halo 3, Hickey believes Microsoft shipped 5.2 million copies of the game for its first week of release, and sold through 4.4 million. That leads to a 67 percent attach rate (percentage of all console owners who purchased the game) in the US, Hickey said. He believes that rate dips to 46 percent when adding in Europe.

Although Hickey doesn't think Grand Theft Auto IV will sell to as large a percentage of Xbox 360 owners, he notes that the expanding installed user base for the Xbox 360 and PS3 could offset whatever shortcoming there is. Even with a projected attach rate of only 20 percent (which Hickey stresses is very conservative), that would indicate first-week sales for the game of 3.5 million units. Hickey seemed more comfortable with a 30 percent attach rate, which would suggest first-week shipments of 5.3 million copies. But there's also a best-case scenario.

"If the upcoming release of GTA IV attached at the same rate as Halo 3," Hickey wrote, "the title could conceivably ship 9.5 million units of [the] game in the first week, producing an astonishing $466 million in sales." In such a case, Hickey projects first-week sales of the game would approach 8.1 million copies.

Lol, wow...is this a joke? I think that this analyst should definitely get a reality check and jump off of the fanboy train...even IF GTA:IV does sell more than Halo 3, 9.5 mill? Jesus Christ...yeah right.

some things to consider: Halo is Huge amongst gamers casual and hardcore, and is the biggest online console shooter. But GTA is huge amongst everyone and it's hasn't even had the chance to get online just yet. Once that happens it's gonna blow up. It's arguably the the most well know title in games other than mario. also people associate halo with setting the bar in online shooters people associate GTA with setting the bar. period. kids who once couldn't buy GTA have grown up. GTA will no doubt get free press throughout the news mediums.

A bold claim but I am going to have to disagree...You have to realize halo 3 did this well on ONE platform even AFTER being released not even 2 weeks after prob the 3rd most anticipated game of the year..Bioshock...and people still bought the game. GTA4 will certainly do well. and perhaps in another universe COULD have been the game to beat all time records..but the reason it wasnt released in Nov to begin with was because they were afraid of Halo 3 sales...GTA has grown in too much infamy amoung parents..I think there will be enough Parents who dont get the game for their kids to make a big difference in sales. Whatever though....I'm still getting it..I am a grown a** man :) HOORAY FOR GREAT GAMES!

Not sure if it will beat the launch of Halo 3, Halo has a massive fanbase because of the story line and the ckliff hanger of 2 gave a bonus to the sales boom. I can see GTA:IV selling more over time but not in the first week.

I'll buy it either way, and I don't really care if 9.2 million of my best friends do the same thing. I'll enjoy it either if sells more or less than Halo.

Shame good games don't sell well and crappy sequels to not soo good games anyway sell great. Ah i forgot most gamers today are newbies and can't deal with difficulty in games. Hence the Wii, Hence Halo 3. I think i played Halo 3 about 10 years ago...what was it called..oh yeah Quake 2.

Qoute AnimeNewtype Slifer2909: " And also Unlike Halo GTA actually has a good storyline and fun single player" Whoa there, dude. Not cool (and not true, either). Halo's storyline and gameplay surely can't suck if the game made over a million dollars in just 24 hours. ___ Are you on crack? The number of units sold on a game that was at that time unplayed is not indicative of its quality or storyline. If I spend money on something, that doesnt mean its good. I bought and played and beat Halo 3 the day it came out, and Im very disappointed. The Story is loose and leaves more questions unanswered, the ending was wishy washy at best and very unfullfilling. Now thats in perspective, it was a good game, Im not going to say it was bad, but it wasnt nearly as good as people were trying to make it out to be. Multiplayer is where Halo 3 shines, and it IS fun, but I have to say I last played it a week ago and Im not really itching to pick it up again. So even that is outside the norm for Halo. I would not doubt its attach rate would be around 50%. It has publicity, Scandal, a string of SOLID games before it and a MUCH more diverse fanbase, plus being on two systems, and one of them severly hurting for games... Yeah, it'll rock the sales of HAlo, and be a better game to boot.

Well, it's multiplatform... but an infamously mature game. I know, I know, Halo's mature too, but I don't think parents care as much about dying aliens as they do about crime wars. This is a bit of a puzzle to me, as Halo 3 has broken some records. GTA IV is multiplatform, coming out around the holiday season, and has, for some strange reason, a huge audience. I really don't like the game, well, I didn't like GTA 3 and all the PS2/Xbox incarnations. They weren't that fun, and the gameplay was aweful (autolocking anyone?). The fourth looks a little different, but the game just ain't sacred gold. Also, CanadianMadCow is right. Who cares? Unless your a share holder it shouldn't matter... oh, you say you're a fanboy? That explains a lot. Okay, well, you're opinion doesn't matter then, since it's biased to hell. Anyway, the only game I could see selling even close to Halo's amount in a week is perhaps Metal Gear, but even that seems fishy to me. Halo 3 was just so hyped up it wasn't even funny. It would be hard to get that much hype for a game ever again.

I'm not sure it will beat Halo 3's launch, because Halo 3 was the last in the series, and there will always be more GTAs. Just the fact that there will me more in the future means that it isn't necessarily the one to turn to, unlike how Halo 3 is the last one. So as far as the demand for both games, Halo might have had a little more than GTA. But still, it will probably be close and only time will tell.

GTA IV I think has the advantage of being sold on two platforms as oppose to Halo 3 which was just on the 360. Still I think it is too early to really say. We'll just have to wait and see how the first week goes.

PS3 and Xbox 360 combined might add up to more GTA IV's but there's no way it will dominate Halo 3 on Xbox 360 alone.

Of course it will sell more, its on more platforms. Will the game be as good, NO. Will the game be played by hundreds of thousands for many more years, NO. Will the game have at least one lawsuit within the first year, YES. GTA is a great series but has nothing on the Halo series as far as a well balanced re-playable game is concerned.

This is an unfair comparison because GTAIV is multiplatform. I'm sure if Halo 3 would have been available for the PS3 its sales would've significantly higher as well.

It's possible, but not likely. When all is said and done GTA will sell more copies than Halo did on the XBOX 360 alone. The bottom line is GTA Franchise > Halo Franchise.

This is quite possible, but the 20 to 30% attach rate is probably much more realistic than 67%. They just had to throw in that "what if" to make it sound bigger than it is. Either way, Halo 3 will still be remembered for its massive launch, so I hope the best for GTAIV.

it`s obvious, since GTA will now make it`s debut on PS3 and XBOX360, not like the past when it was just on PS. And it will also be the #1 selling game on the PS3 since everything else in that console is bull$h1t .
