An Update on Star Wars Battlefront 3 Fan Remake and Some New Images

"Galaxy in Turmoil" continues.

The fan remake of Star Wars Battlefront III, the controversial, ill-fated Star Wars shooter that was in development at Free Radical before being canceled, continues to move forward. The team of Star Wars fans behind the unlicensed game, Frontwire Studios, today hosted a new livestream where they talked more about their attempts to revive and remake the game as part of a PC project called "Galaxy in Turmoil."

During the stream, the developers shared new work-in-progress images and cleared up a few points of potential confusion. First, they stressed that Galaxy in Turmoil will be a free game when it is eventually released. This is because the team feels like fans deserved to get Star Wars Battlefront III years ago before it was canceled. Additionally, from a business perspective, this may keep it off Disney legal team's radar, for now at least.

The game is of course inspired by Battlefront III, but its assets were built from the ground up, the developers said. However, they also explained they plan to use John Williams' score, which could lead to some legal issues, we'd imagine.

During the stream, the developers said if Disney sends them a cease and desist order, they will shut down the project right away. They said they would be "shocked" if Disney was not aware of the project. Additionally, they said they would contact Disney in the future to talk about how they can go about ensuring the project does not get shut down.

It was also announced during the event that Frontwire, as of Friday morning, is now an official, registered company.

Check out the bullet point list below for some other takeaways from the stream, while you can click through the images in the gallery above to see some shots that were revealed today.

  • Game runs on Unreal Engine 4
  • Undecided about split-screen.
  • Don't expect it on Steam, since it's an unlicensed game.
  • Game is in pre-alpha currently; all plans are subject to change.
  • All classic Battlefront game modes will be available, while Frontwire is creating a new mode designed around competitive play.
  • Matches will be 32v32 players; AI will fill in for players who drop out mid-match.
  • Will include original Battlefront III maps and some new ones.
  • Support for Battlefield II maps it to be determined; could be added as DLC.
  • Development won't end at 1.0 release; more content will be added later.
  • Will include multiplayer because "it's not Battlefront without multiplayer."
  • Mod support could come after launch.
  • Developers are looking at all eras of Star Wars; fans can add their own content with mods.
  • No Star Cards like DICE's new Battlefront.
  • There will be pickups for things like health packs and ammo drops.
  • No health generation.
  • Aims to be faithful to the original Battlefront games.
  • Some maps have a day/night cycle.
  • Frontwire hopes to make a new IP after releasing Galaxy in Turmoil.
  • A video will be released on May 4, Stars War Day, to hype the Battlefront III remake.

The remake's developers include TheDarkSithLord, ColeT2014, CoolJedy, Corra_Ashu, and Dinozavr. Frontwire is also inviting people with development experience to help out.

Despite numerous and detailed evidence about its existence and development, LucasArts never actually confirmed that Battlefront III was in fact in production. The game has long been the subject of much rumor, speculation, and head-butting.

In January this year, gameplay footage stemming from what appeared to be a leaked prototype version of Battlefront III emerged online.

"After a lot of work I managed to get my hands on Star Wars Battlefront III and wanted to share the infamous canceled game that I'm sure many of you wanted to play," the person who leaked the footage said at the time. "I know not everyone will get the chance to play this immediately, but over time I expect the modding community to be able to change that."

That's now exactly what's happening.

EA launched a new Star Wars Battlefront game in November for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC--it was a big, big hit. Multiple sequels are apparently also on the way.

Disney and EA have to shut this down. The developpers could create a battlefront spiritual successor and sell it instead. As much as I personally love fan made projects on a scale like this, EA couldn't possibly let it slide, and not because they are a greedy money grubbing company.

Sounds cool, but I'd think they'd more likely get a cease and desist letter from E.A. as they're the rights holder for Star Wars video games and this could be seen as a game that could derail Battlefront. Not to mention the fact that the way copyright works, Disney and E.A are legally required to shut the project down otherwise they risk losing the rights to their own material. I'd suggest that you contact EA directly and see about making this a mod for Battlefront before wasting any more time. All the best luck to the developers but its so risky working with an IP that's not your own and you have no rights to.

I'm sorry but make a new IP .. this is just daft .. if I were Disney you would have already been handed a C&D!!

Like every has stated below me. This will get shut down by the greedy EA and Disney. Shame really, True Star Wars fans deserve a Good Game. But sadly that wont ever happen. The developers that are making BF 3 should at least publicly say that they are Canceling the game but privately keep working on it. Since its going to be free. They should release it on a private server.

you mean they are going to make the game we want??? bad it will be shut down by disney.....

Avatar image for banjhex

Disney once told a elementary school to paint over the lunch room walls because it had Disney characters painted on them without their permission. If they are still the same ol Disney then I am sorry to say this project was doomed the minute that Disney purchased the rights to Star Wars.

I'm just waiting for the CAD, we all know it's coming

"Support for Battlefield II maps it to be determined; could be added as DLC."

Eddie it's Battlefront not Battlefield.

Proofread much?? :)

Avatar image for xXxKTTxXx

@computernoises: lol didn't notice that.
I was gonna give Eddie the benefit of the doubt here since Battlefield II was a memorable game and it's easy to confuse the names and all (Though still not an excuse for shoddy reporting)

But Eddie's gonna Eddie I guess... :P

I would bet my right nut that they all give up before anything comes of it.

I would bet my left nut that before that happens, Disney will destroy this thing beneath its megalithic foot.

I am confident I will retain my nuts.

Avatar image for xXxKTTxXx

@tidus_ff: They just secured a publishing deal with Valve to put the game on Steam soon...

...... Now, about that right nut.....

Avatar image for Pyro978

I don't have any faith that Disney will not tell them to terminate the project.

Avatar image for ThePlantain

Good luck, Disney's gonna nuke that.

Avatar image for jski

CAD is inbound. I'll never understand why people do this. Get your team together, finish the game, release it into the internet where it will exist forever. If you are not making it for money, there is no reason to tell anyone it exists until it is done.

Avatar image for baral-o

how long before EA and disney execute order 66 on them?

Avatar image for mightofphobos

@baral-o: Order 66 isn't in the original trilogy or Episode VII. EA and Disney don't care about it and would probably deny its existence if asked about it.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

Hell. they said on their forums that they don't want to attract attention from media, but they are failing in it which makes me worry about this promising project.

Avatar image for xxdavidxcx87

They should definitely stop this, it's their property after all, you wouldn't like it if somebody copied your material and sold it as their own, hope it gets dropped, looks trash anyway.

Avatar image for smokerob79

@xxdavidxcx87: im going to be blunt.....with what is know now they are making the game the world wanted.....i DO NOT care how good the sales of battlefront are, the new one sucks hairy donkey looks like a shiny TURD........the problem is they are working on it without copy rights....disney are the NAZI's of the entertainment world......if it was me i would look at what they are doing and if its good fund them and put it out on EA servers.....(just because of the contracts EA has i hate them as well).......but it would get out that way.....something i dont think will happen without it being done illegally at this point.....

Avatar image for Daveof89

@xxdavidxcx87: They're not selling it....

Avatar image for xxdavidxcx87

@Daveof89: price isn't relevant, it's somebody else's property, you can't just copy and paste somebody else's idea, for all any of us know Disney may well want to release battlefront 3 in the future.

Avatar image for larsondir82

@xxdavidxcx87: At least it would be a lot better than the piece of trash that EA/Dice released.

Avatar image for shogunreaper

yeah well nothing would stop them from doing it.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

@xxdavidxcx87: LOL. not as Trash as DICE's Battlefront.

Avatar image for smokerob79

@koopasta69: its disney......they will kill it.....

Avatar image for DeadrisingX1

EA, Disney, please piss off for a little bit longer.

It'd be great if some of us could get our hands on this.

Avatar image for chibi-acer

If Disney doesn't shut them down, EA could conceivably sue Disney for permitting a violation of their exclusivity contract. Or EA could push to have them shutdown directly. If it was just Disney they had to work with, maybe the project could survive. But when you throw EA into the mix, given their history record, I don't give this project very good odds.

Avatar image for arcmanov

Doesn't take much to see that a free Star Wars game *might* take those dollars away from Star Wars games that aren't free.

The question isn't 'if' Disney is gonna crush this project, but 'when'.

Avatar image for smokerob79

@arcmanov: wont buy the new game and have sent many Emails to EA telling them why after open beta(had real responses)....i will NEVER buy the new game even if its 5 bucks with all the DLC included.....this game these people are making is what most of the world wanted......but disney like always will kill it....

Avatar image for thespicychiken

@arcmanov: I didn't buy battlefront so they weren't getting my moeny anyway.

Avatar image for Ultima_Dragoon

Disney CEO:: Haha that little fan-made game is cute. It was a nice try, but too bad it's going to fail.
Advisor: Uh, sir. Consumers are saying it looks better than our game!

Avatar image for lonewolf1044

@Ultima_Dragoon: No, this is what going to happen, The group made an outstanding game that is free and Disney sees the potential of lost revenue with EA's input and shut down the project and down the road you will see it again not for free and under EA's flag. I hope we can get it before this really happens. :)

Avatar image for skittymiao

If I was the head of Disney, I would say- "Then, Come on, developers. Why haven't you talked to us yet? What do you need to make this project successful? Money, technology, members, etc, we will provide you anything. Your intellects are wayyyy superior than EA's money grabbers. What's the name of your company, my friends. Today, I'm going to cancel the deal with EA and sign a deal with yours permanently."

Avatar image for Daveof89

@skittymiao: EA has an exclusivity contract... not gonna happen.

Avatar image for chimekolover88

@skittymiao: we can only hope with all our might that this is the outcome in the end!

Avatar image for Xandagar

EA and Disney: "That's a fantastic looking game you got there. Even better than ours. It will be a shame if the project gets shut down..."

Avatar image for attirex

Devs get swatted with army of Disney lawyers in 3...2....

Avatar image for smokerob79

@attirex: say it ant so......say it........i want this game

Avatar image for lonewolf1044

@attirex: Man, LMAO :)

Avatar image for dunc7827

this will get shut down even if it is free as it would compete with the paid version

Avatar image for zeldafan195

These devs are going to embarrass EA if they can pull this off.

Avatar image for Duffy12323

It would be significantly better in every way than the pile of s*** EA recently released, but unfortunately those trolls probably won't allow the game to be released.

Avatar image for merwanor

And again a remake that will very likely be shut down. Of course I would love for it to be released but I can't remember any fan-remakes that has ever been released. And since EA has the license for Star Wars games for the next 10 years or something like that (Perhaps the worst thing to ever happen to Star Wars). It makes it even more unlikely.

Avatar image for smokerob79

@merwanor: look like im not buying a star wars game for 10 years......

Avatar image for TERMINATOR-SSD

they will be dealing with EA and Disney.... BYE.

I would love to see this come together but EA is the bigger problem here, as they bought a licence to make Star Wars games.
