Among Us, the multiplayer game where you try to seek out an imposter, had a banner year in 2020. The game saw a massive spike in popularity; the game got so big that even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got in on the action with her own record-breaking stream.

Victoria Tran, the community director at developer Innersloth, has now shared her thoughts on the surge in popularity for the game in 2020. Speaking to GameSpot's Lucy James during sister site CNET's CES 2021 coverage, Tran said of the renewed interest in Among Us, "That was terrifying and amazing and wonderful and there is really no English word to make people comprehend how surprising and amazing it was."

Asked what might have contributed to the big success of Among Us in 2020, Tran said it came down to a number of elements.

"One is the core simplicity of the game. You don't need high strategy in terms of coordination, you just need to know how to be able to talk to people within your chat," she said.

Tran also stated that Among Us benefitted from the fact that you don't need a high-end PC or console to play the game and become part of the community.

"A lot of people don't have huge computer rigs or the PlayStations to play a lot of these games that we all like to talk about. And because Among Us and mobile and PC and there's cross-play, I think that's what helped everything come together," Tran said.

In 2021, Innersloth will implement additional features in Among Us to help players stay connected and build a bigger community for the game as a social network, Tran said. Another ambition will be to reach out to the wider playerbase of people who don't follow gaming news day in and day out, Tran said. On top of that, there are some special surprises coming.

"We have some secrets in the works that I unfortunately cannot talk about," Tran said.
