American Idol winner places 257th at EVO Smash Bros. event

Taylor Hicks ties for 257th place during Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament last weekend.

Taylor Hicks, who won the fifth season of American Idol in 2006, tied for 257th place during the Super Smash Bros. Melee event at last weekend's EVO, it has been revealed.

Sony Santa Monica designer and longtime fighting game figure Seth Killian snapped a photo of Hicks (at right) during the tournament.

Nearly 700 players took part in the Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament, meaning Hicks finished better than most.

The Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament at EVO this year was in question. Just days before the event, organizers revealed that Nintendo attempted to block the entire tournament.

"It's their IP, they can do what they want," EVO founder Joey Cuellar said last week.

Nintendo would ultimately allow the tournament to go on and for it to be streamed. This year's EVO drew a record 1.7 million unique viewers through Twitch, 134,000 of which watched the Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament.

An all-new Super Smash Bros. game will launch for the Wii U and 3DS next year.

Guys......257th out of 700 is like dead last or second to last. There are unsettled ties all the way up to 5th place. At best he won a single set and it may have been a bye.

Neat that he entered though.

Huh. Who knew?

Avatar image for d3chu

How about Ken Hoang? He finished 49th in Smash, and he was on Survivor

Avatar image for Alex4789123

@d3chu Haha I remember that guy.

Avatar image for Leboyo56

Wow, I haven't heard anything about him since he won Idol. Really cool that this is the first thing since then, at least.

Avatar image for DinoBuster

This constitutes as an interesting article because whether you personally care bout him or not, the dude won American Idol. He's a celebrity. Hearing about celebrities partaking in this wonderful video game hobby or ours is interesting. I was both amused and interested to read about Hicks' involvement with Super Smash Bros. Melee. I am not sorry I read the article.

Avatar image for oflow

@DinoBuster calling him a celebrity may be reaching. Hes the winner on a reality show, that doesnt make him a celebrity.

Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks and Fantasia are celebrities. This guys just won American Idol lol.

Avatar image for DinoBuster

@oflow @DinoBuster True, but I think I'd replace Fantasia with Kelly Clarkson.

Avatar image for kellian1

Well that answers the question we were all wondering of what ever happened to Taylor Hicks!!

Oh, nobody was asking that? My bad...

Avatar image for Leboyo56

@kellian1 I've always wondered. He was such a great singer that I'm surprised I never heard him anywhere after American Idol. Still my favorite season of the five or so I've watched.

Avatar image for cvjr

out 700, thats damn good.

Avatar image for TheMudora

Who cares about Hicks, why is Killian taking pics with Melee entrants? Keep that snake away.

Avatar image for Kyere

I gotta say, I was honestly surprised to read this... I guess that's cool? I mean, gives EVO some more publicity.

Avatar image for EPaul

It's an interesting little story don't why so many people are shitting on it

Avatar image for Numbuh277

i swear internet social rejects try to downplay everything shit. what did you place at EVO 2013? don't worry i'll wait.

Avatar image for monster637

@Numbuh277 i actually signed in to give ya this like

This is news?

257th... Yee-Ha!

Maybe it is good but there are 256 more news worthy players before them.

The guy in 113th had a Great Grandad that once performed in a USO show...

The guy in 310th had a tooth removed that same day.

The guy in 96th was at bachelor party and was drunk.

Who cares?

Avatar image for Leboyo56

@punksterdaddy Looks like he couldn't make it past the kill-screen contestant.

Avatar image for 00LiteYear

Lol, interesting.

Avatar image for tagyhag

Heh, so many people here think they're better than him. He placed 257th out of the ENTIRE world.

Going to EVO, making a trip to Vegas, isn't something a casual Smash player would do. He played against ridiculously good people and got to the better half, so it IS impressive.

Yes the champions did better, but how many of those won American Idol?

Avatar image for ThrashMatt26

@tagyhag He actually lives in Vegas, or atleast is doing nightly shows there

Avatar image for Kyere

@ThrashMatt26 Basically, he's doing more with his life than half the basement dwellers here have. And can play SSBM better than most of the people I know. I'm happy for Taylor, good to see we get all types of people that play competitively. :)

Avatar image for AIduin

@tagyhag You're acting like winning American Idol is hard.

All you have to do to win is have a cute sob story like ''I used to be an alcoholic'' or ''One of my family members is in the hospital and i'll use the money I win to help''

American Idol, like all those ''talent'' shows are nothing more than popularity contests.

Avatar image for blackace

This isn't even news worthy. Nintendo wanting to block the tournament is more interesting. Why would they want to do that considering how much negativity they've had since the Wii U. If anything they should have supported this 100% and push their Wii U at the same time.

Avatar image for decoy1978

Slow news Tuesday....

But placing 257th out of a few hundred is pretty impressive.

Avatar image for berserker66666

Just because you're good at singing, doesn't mean you're good at gaming. Go home Taylor, you're drunk.

I think he's a cool guy for taking time out of his celebrity career to attend EVO. That's special enough to me.

This article deserved to be here, no matter how meaningless or silly that some of you find it.

Avatar image for MonoSilver

Finally now I can die a happy man! Thank you GS!

Ok, why is this news and how did it get approved?

Avatar image for Funkyhamster

I for one got a kick out of this article.

Avatar image for KingofCabal

@Funkyhamster As in a kick in the balls?

Avatar image for KingofCabal

WTF?? This is probably the most meaningless article ever posted on GS.

The guy didn't even do that good! Shame on you Eddie Makuch!

Avatar image for Kyere

@KingofCabal 257th at EVO = better than you. In case you didn't realize that getting into EVO isn't exactly easy.

Avatar image for nothingman97

@KingofCabal And who the heck cares about Taylor f'n Hicks anyway?!? Wow.

Avatar image for crunchb3rry

Wow, he's good at Smash Bros. Call me when he trades the diaper in for big-boy pants and starts playing Street Fighter or KOF.

Avatar image for Kyere

@crunchb3rry You also realize that some of the best SF and KOF fighters play in the SSB tourney right? Go **** yourself kid. We bring all competitive fighters under the EVO roof, not just the ones you "think" are better.

Let's also not forget it's one of the oldest games at EVO.

Avatar image for alvarokike

@crunchb3rry Smash is so much better than those

Avatar image for Jebril

@crunchb3rry You do realize most pro SF players realize that Melee has more tech skill in it than SF right? It's one of the most technical games out there. Stop talking.

Avatar image for PixelAddict

Well now. This is just not something I expected to read while drinking my morning coffee.

Avatar image for svaargod

Why is this news on a gaming site?

Avatar image for goggles123456

@svaargod Because it's gaming news, albeit completely lackluster and pointless gaming news.

Avatar image for StonerDemon

Next new game at EVO 2014: Singstar.

Avatar image for gastankkiller

I visit a lot of video game websites during the week at the office. Yeah, I get board. I see so much news that is missed and/or overlooked by GameSpot on an average day. You know the important video game news, but stuff like this makes it...

Avatar image for AzureBonds76

When I heard Taylor Hicks was performing a few years ago at the Bloomsburg fair here in PA I was worried his carrer was in jeopardy...

it's good to see that he actually was a shrewd businessman and instead of pursuing a tepid career in singing other folks more noteworthy songs at state fairs he has branched out into underperforming nerds at smash bros

woot woot woot

Avatar image for blackothh

I woke up this morning, went to work, and read this article, where is my interview?

Avatar image for deathblow3

@blackothh i know and in other news failed idol winners fail at some thing else.

Avatar image for Hiddai
