CDV Software Entertainment has today announced that it will run a transatlantic American Conquest tournament to celebrate the long-awaited release of the historical real-time strategy game. The War of Independence tournament, which is sponsored in part by Gainward, will run on both sides of the Atlantic between February 14 (when the game is released in Europe) and May 15, when the best player from each continent will face off in the grand final in Los Angeles to find out who will take home prizes worth around $10,000.

More than 4,000 players are expected to enter the tournament, so all the games will be played over the Internet until the field in each territory is whittled down to the final 16. At that point, players will be invited to compete for place in the grand final by participating in tournaments in both London and an as-yet-undecided location in the US.

"This event will be see all CDV territories working together to find the undisputed strategy game king of the world," said Terry Malham, president, CDV Software Entertainment UK. "It's the most ambitious tournament we've ever organized and the prize will enable the winner not just to soak up the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, but, hopefully, humiliate an American in the process. It's time we restored part of the Empire."
