AMD Radeon RX 500 Video Card Series Coming Out April 18 - Report

Four new video cards before Vega.

According to a Facebook post from an unofficial Powercolor page, the next series of AMD video cards--the RX 500 lineup--will be released on April 18. The post also showed a picture of Powercolor's "Red Devil" version of a new card. Several sites such as Videocardz.com and Wccftech have reported on this release date, and previously leaked the specifications of the new RX 500 series of cards. Photos of the cards from other vendors such as XFX and Gigabyte/Aorus have been revealed as well.

These reports also indicate that the RX 500 line will consist of four different versions: the RX 580, RX 570, RX 560, and RX 550. All cards are said to be based on the current Polaris architecture used in the RX 400 series. The RX 500 series will not feature the much anticipated Vega architecture, which is expected to come out later this year.

The following chart details the expected specifications--derived from the Wccftech report--of AMD's new cards:

Video CardBoost Clock SpeedVRAMBus / BandwidthEstimated Price
RX 5801340 MHz4GB or 8GB256-bit / 256 GB/s$229 to $279 USD
RX 5701244 MHz4GB or 8GB256-bit / 224 GB/s$169 to $229 USD
RX 5601287 MHz2GB or 4GB128-bit / 112 GB/s$110 to $120 USD
RX 5501300 MHz2GB64-bit / 56 GB/s$99 USD

We reached out to AMD for comment on the release date and specifications, and will update this story with more details.

@wexorian: if they did die, then it would just be AMD monopoly. The saga must continue.

@andyvecc011: Not at all. Ryzen is great, Vega is expected to be just as good. It's about time both the CPU and GPU markets had a shake up with some real competition.

@Daian: They are trying to keep up with competing against Nvidia and they didn't release anything since Nvidia released their latest 10X0 serie so they have to do something before Nvidia release another line of GPU. I'm not a fan of AMD, but those new cards look totally rad with their pricing. This will make budget PC gaming a lot more affordable. Building a decent gaming machine for 500$ is killer.

Kind of interesting, but I already have a 480, and if I wanted to, I could probably push it to 1340mhz, albeit with heat and noise issues. Definitely was able to get it to 1325 stable. Honestly, I feel like Vega is the bigger deal at this point. None of these cards are real competition to anything higher than the 1060.

Wish they could've pushed the cards out last month or even in February so that all the rough edges could've been polished and perhaps even some non-reference cards shipped by next month. I've been working towards replacing my HD6870, and possibly my GTS 450 along with it, next month, and these cards are shipping at a pretty awkward time for that. :-/

@Marikhen: Wow, how are you still gaming on those? I had a 6970 and it was a good card, but around two years ago the performance on new games got too bad for me to handle. Looks like you definitely got your moneys worth out of them though. =)

@Iamkalell: Fairly easily for the most part. I mean I've got to have Fallout 4 cranked to minimum, and even then the textures look worse than vanilla Skyrim (original) textures, probably due to only 1GB VRAM and Bethesda being Bethesda. For that matter I can't play The Witcher 3 given the 40 FPS and under in just the first part of the intro area with everything on minimum. Virtually everything else I tend to play these days works just fine.

For reference, the GTS 450 is there primarily for when I want to multi-box MMOs (which is rare these days) and hardware PhysX support, and while it's a bit weak it was, at least a few years ago, still plenty strong enough to handle a pair of monitors with EVE Online clients on them while Borderlands 2 is probably the most PhysX-intensive game I've played recently and doesn't run the card over 50%. I originally tried pairing my just-replaced HD4830 with the HD6870 for 3+ monitor support, but I suspect that there were some driver issues resulting in games being displayed on and that should have been run from the HD4830 to still be rendered by the HD6870 whereas with the GTS 450 I didn't have the issue and games would be rendered on the card that they used the graphics adapter for.
