Amazon reveals Kindle Fire HD

New $299 tablet shipping Nov. 20 sports 8.9-inch display, 1920x1200 resolution, 16GB memory, front-facing HD camera; 7-inch, 4G, and upgraded original also announced.

Today during a press event in Santa Monica, California, Amazon revealed the Kindle Fire HD, a larger and more feature-rich version of the tablet line it launched last November. The new $299 model boasts an 8.9-inch display that the online retail giant claims has 25 percent less glare, with 1900x1200 resolution, a front-facing HD camera, HDMI out, and Dolby digital stereo speakers.

The Kindle Fire HD measures 8.8mm in thickness, features better Wi-Fi connectivity (the result of dual antennas and dual band 2.4GHz and 5GHz support), an OMAP 4470 processor from Texas Instruments, and 16GB of storage. The tablet will also come in a $199 7-inch model. That version ships first on September 14, with the 8.9-inch model arriving November 20.

In addition, Amazon unveiled a $500 Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE wireless. The tablet will come with 32GB of storage, and users can expect to pay $50 per year for 250MB of data per month. Amazon did not say which plan provider(s) it had partnered with.

Amazon also announced that it will launch an upgraded version of the original Kindle Fire later this month. The new iteration includes a 20 percent faster processor, 16GB of storage, and longer battery life. The new Kindle Fire ships on September 14 at $159.

I would be a lot more excited were I not jaded by the eReader profile that Kindle has forged for itself. Believe it or not I will just stay with the lines that never show a shadow of limitation (also why Mac will never beat out PC).

I am sure the new Fire's will sell more than Amazon deserves.

I have 2 of the originals and my only problem with them is the customized operating system.

It's not even the fact that Amazon stripped it of everything people love about Android. It's the fact that the customization's make the OS sluggish and unresponsive. You touch something on the screen and you never know if the action you expect has been executed until you wait a bit.

The hardware inside the Fire devices is pretty decent and has potential to be as speedy as competitors. But Amazon's insistence on making it a unique experience without having to build their own OS has caused the hardware to under perform.

I will not root my kindle fire's just to get Android as it should be. Instead I will look to purchase tablets from competitors who give me a well-rounded experience. I recommend people purchase a Nexus 7 or some other tablet instead of wasting money on a device that has current hardware, but runs like it is 3 years behind the times due to badly written software.

Buy a kindle 8.9 hd, an iPhone and a gaming laptop and you'll have the best of everything. (or you can switch with an iPad and galaxy s3)

I highly recommend a standard Kindle Fire if you want to forget your console for a while and do some reading...

I like having what I call "a dedicated book reading device" :-)

So, a bigger Kindle Fire that's not addressing the chief limitation of the original: how easily the system gets bogged down? That TI OMAP processor isn't going to be able to touch a quad-core Tegra 3. And 4G connectivity isn't worth the trouble if you only get 250 mb a month on the basic plan (that's essentially one 1-hour TV show); it's better to just tether your 4G phone with FoxFi and use the plan you're already paying for.

I picked up a Nexus 7 last month, and I absolutely love it. My only complaint is that the Android app economy is not nearly as nice as the iTunes app economy -- I've had a hard time finding apps worth the $25 credit Google provided with my purchase (though Horn and Galaxy on Fire 2 THD are both certainly worth the money!).

Too little too late. The Nexus 7 is top dog in 7-inch tablet department. It will stay there for quite a while. Anything over 7-inches belongs to the iPad, that is until the iPad mini comes out and then that market will become Thunderdome. Sorry Amazon, you had a winner for a little while with the first Fire, but now you are doomed to fail.

It sounds boring. Can't developers think of anything original to do with phones and tablets any more?

I'm sick of all these new touch screen tablets coming out.. just get a cheap PC /Laptop or PS3 / XBOX360 / PS Vita or Nintendo 3DS. Cheaper and all run faster and play way better games than any sh*tty tablet that u can get.

Tablets are made with no hard drive space so in 6 months they can release a new version tablet with a few GB bigger hard drive space. They could clearly just make them big from the start but no you only get 64GB max at the moment even though i have a 160GB ipod classic. They could easily use the Hard Drives from them but no they will wait 5 years of slowly building it up so the buyers pay way more for cheap cr*p.

If the $199 version still has 16GB of memory, I might have to delay my Nexus 7 purchase until the next version. I really only want one to have an extra "screen" around the house, so the CPU shouldn't bother me much.

So lemme clarify, there's an upgraded version of the original Kindle Fire? If so, then I hope some store would offer a trade for my 6 months Kindle Fire for an upgrade, maybe trade it for the HD?

Wi-Fi does, but correct me if I'm wrong, you can't buy applications, stream videos or get an amazon prime account unless you live in the US.

@Cult @the_requiem That's partially correct. I live in Korea and soon-to-be Japan and my Kindle Fire doesn't allow streaming shows or movies through a prime account. Everything else, however is completely functional. You can still buy books, magazines, and any application you want from their store. Tricking amazon to ship one overseas is probably the biggest hurdle.

@mrtrolololo Nexus 7 kicks serious amounts of ass. I haven't met an unhappy customer yet for the Nexus 7. iPad 3rd gen is obviously better (the older models not so much) but also way more money.

The CPU is pure garbage, here are the tech info for those interested:

name: OMAP4470

architecture: 45nm

CPU type: ARM7

CPU clock: 1.5-1.8 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9

GPU: PowerVR SGX544 @ 384 MHz + dedicated 2D graphics core

Memory tech: 32-bit Dual-channel 466 MHz LPDDR2

This CPU is just a bit better than Samsung Galaxy's Nexus (a smartphone).

@Reuwsaat It's an e-reader. You don't need a bleeding edge processor to read text on a screen.

Kindle seems to have plenty of choices for a tablet. Reasonable priced which should help them against apple. Still not convinced on the choice of a Tablet computer for gaming. But at least it is cheaper to try. Thanks to Kindle.

I like my Kindle Fire despite a few issues. For one, the home screen just seems abit cluttered and disorganized at times. And when you're surfing the internet it sometimes lags little when you want to shrink or expand a page. Also, playing videos on a few sites just doesn't seem to work on the Fire. So I'm hoping the HD will have some improvements on that even though most of the time I use mine for reading.

@dark_rising76 Dark, if you allow installation of 3rd party apps in the settings you can then go download the Opera web browser. It should handle all the sites that Silk has issues with. I find it much faster and now use exclusively on our Fire.

What's really funny about the Kindle is you can buy an IPad2 and then get the Kindle app. lol!! So if you have the Kindle app for the IPad2 , you don't need to buy a Kindle. You can have the best of both worlds.

You can buy one ipad for $500 or get two of these for $600. Or if you buy 6, thats $1,800. That might be too many. Just buy one and maybe another for family.
