Amazon Orders Series Based On A League Of Their Own

The classic Geena Davis and Tom Hanks comedy A League of Their Own, directed by Penny Marshall, is being recreated as a brand-new original series on Amazon Prime Video.

The new show will consist of hour-long episodes, according to Variety, and the series will star Abbi Jacobson (Broad City)--who co-create and will executive produce alongside Will Graham--Chanté Adams (Roxanne Roxanne), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Brain in Gear), Kelly McCormack (Letterkenny), Roberta Colindrez (Birdman), and Priscilla Delgado (Julieta).

Much like the original film, the show will follow a group of women who answer the call to play professional baseball. The series will topics like sexuality and race throughout its run, both on the field and off.

"28 years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked," Jacobson and Graham said via Variety). "We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else. Three years ago, we approached Sony with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories. With the help of an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast, and the devoted support of Amazon to this project, we feel beyond lucky and excited to get to bring these characters to life. It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humor for these players to achieve their dreams. We're hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities."

Jacobson and Graham's reimagining of the film--which is based on real events in the Midwest during World War II--will bring the story to a new generation "with new characters and their own fresh, modern vision on a timeless story of big dreams, friendship, love, and, of course, baseball," according to co-head of TV for Amazon Studios Vernon Sanders.

The Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television will produce the series alongside Field Trip Productions. There is no release date set for the series as of this writing.
