Amazon Developing Live-Action The Promised Neverland Series
It's being written and produced by talent from the award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Amazon is planning to adapt the popular sci-fi thriller anime, The Promised Neverland, into a live-action series, according to Variety. Meghan Malloy, a consultant on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is said to be penning the script.
This Promised Neverland live-action adaptation will be in English, with the series being directed and produced by Rodney Rothman (Into the Spider-Verse, 22 Jump Street). Masi Oka (Hero, Spies in Disguise), the founder of Outer Wilds developer Mobius Digital Games, will also serve as an executive producer on the series, alongside Vertigo Entertainment founder Roy Lee (Doctor Sleep, The Disaster Artist) and company president Miri Yoon (Death Note).
The Promised Neverland was written by Kaiu Shirai and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since August 2016. The series follows a group of incredibly intelligent kids who, after uncovering a disturbing truth at an otherwise comforting and idyllic orphanage, attempt to escape it and save the children trapped there. An anime, produced by CloverWorks (Fairy Tail), ran from January to March 2019. A second season was announced for an October 2020 premiere but, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, was pushed to January 2021.
A Japanese live-action adaptation of Promised Neverland is set to release on December 18 in Japan. As it stands, the Amazon-produced Promised Neverland adaptation doesn't have a release date.
