Now Playing: Breakaway - 16 Minutes Of Gameplay From Amazon's Esports Title

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Breakaway, the competitive video game developed by retailer Amazon's internal game studio, has been canceled. The developer, Amazon Game Studios, announced over the weekend that it has canceled the game "after a lot of soul searching," and is now instead moving on to pursue "new ideas" instead.

"While we have developed many ideas and made a lot of progress, we are also setting a very high bar for ourselves," Amazon said. "In spite of our efforts, we didn't achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be. After a lot of soul searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas. As a result, Breakaway is no longer in active development."

The cancellation statement continues: "We remain exceptionally proud of the team's work, and feel privileged to have been a part of such a dedicated and enthusiastic community."

Amazon Game Studios left the smallest glimmer of hope for Breakaway, saying it could return to the project "if a thunderbolt of inspiration strikes." The official word is that "Breakaway is no longer in active development."

This is no big surprise, as Kotaku reported back in October 2017 that Breakaway, a 4v4 game, was canceled. The shutdown of the project came after Amazon reportedly held multiple public tests. Presumably the feedback was not as enthusiastic as Amazon would have wanted.

So now Breakaway will join the ranks of canceled games that includes titles like Scalebound, Star Wars 1313, Titan, and others.

While Breakaway is canceled, Amazon Game Studios has multiple titles in the works, including an open-ended sandbox game called New World and a third-person sci-fi game called Crucible. Amazon had a big hiring push years ago, bringing on Portal designer Kim Swift and Far Cry 2 director Clint Hocking, though they left the studio without releasing anything. Now, former Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley is heading up Amazon Game Studios in San Diego.

Apart from Star Citizen who switched to lumberyard so they could dodge promoting cry engine... who even uses amazon lumberyard? Everyone who hasn't developed their own engine is using Unity, Unreal or Cry Engine.

Hmm, I guess the MOBA style team based shooter ship has sailed, I'd put my life savings on their next game being a Battle Royale of some sort.

Here's a tip Amazon, stop chasing trends, start innovating. We have PUBG and Fortnite, there is no room for another Battle Royale game. Same goes for other developers trying to saturate the market.

Why are they hiring and canceling so much? The studio's workplace climate must be pretty shitty.

I had no idea that was a thing, but I'm really over all the multiplayer stuff anyway. Its the reality tv of gaming.

nobody noticed or cared about it in the first place, thus making the cancellation irrelevant. amazon just wants to get into the news for no other reason but publicity. sorry, we will never take amazon's gaming ventures seriously.

@Xristophoros: "amazon just wants to get into the news for no other reason but publicity"
Amazon is not in the need publicity, let alone one so expensive as creating a game studio. That would be nonsense.

@Xristophoros: Dumbest thing I've read on this site in a while. Just because you didn't know about it doesn't mean no one else did. Also most companies announce when they cancel a game, that way people that were looking forward to it aren't sitting around waiting for something that isn't coming.

@Zorlac: judging by the comments on here, there are two camps; those who don't give a shit about this game or those who never knew it existed in the first place. the only person on here i see doing damage control for amazon is you. not sure why since it's not like amazon gaming division exactly has a following or has put out a single game worth a damn. they are more concerned with data mining customers and making autonomous grocery stores.

Good idea to cancel. The last thing the world needs are more online multiplayer crap games. Way too many of them.

Idea was not so much unique to start off , either way Good that they pulled off Life Support from game before it was even ready for Beta.

Amazon was making a game? Wow, they're really trying to become more than just an online retailer, aren't they?

@wexorian: yup, anyone who follows the industry knows that. Difference is that those companies and their developers have a good track record of actually releasing games, and good ones at that.

@dacontag: In all fairness, all those established developers were new at some point in time. Gotta start somewhere.

@sakaixx: You know, I had the exact same thought. Wondered maybe their game was riddled with MT's from it's design stage, and seeing the bad press on such things, decided it was easier to quit it than re-model.

1. Has Amazon EVER released ANY game ever (besides that one crappy mobile game years ago)? They only "develop" and cancel. They're not interested in "shipping".

2. If there were PUBLIC tests, how come not a second of footage or even a screenshot ever leaked? Why should anyone be excited about this? Only because it was a big company, who was making the game?

I guess the market is just too competitive right now.
