All Xbox Series X Games With Confirmed Free Smart Delivery Upgrade

Microsoft debuted a ton of games at its latest Inside Xbox, and lots of them will let you freely upgrade between Xbox One and Series X.

As the holiday slowly approaches, Microsoft continues to provide new looks at its roster of Xbox Series X games. While all the new title may have you worried about having to fork over an arm and leg to play them, you actually don't have to upgrade your hardware right away to get the Series X versions of certain cross-gen games. As part of Microsoft's push to bridge the current and next generation, the company is implementing a feature it calls Smart Delivery, which allows you to download the version that matches your current hardware. This does not require any additional fee, and it is done automatically so you never have to worry about whether you have the correct version installed.

Check below for the full list of Smart Delivery-enabled games so far, and check back as Microsoft reveals more heading into the launch of Xbox Series X this holiday season. Be sure to check back often as we update this feature with more confirmed Smart Delivery games.

Microsoft announced that all first-party games from Xbox Game Studios will use Smart Delivery, which would include games we already know about like Halo Infinite and Hellblade 2. CD Projekt Red has also already announced that the feature will be available for Cyberpunk 2077. There will be certain upgrades made for the game when it launches this holiday season. However, a full Xbox Series X version will not be released then.

Smart Delivery is opt-in for third-party developers, but the consumer-friendly feature already appears to be getting adopted widely. It essentially ties the game to your account and upgrades your copy if you upgrade your hardware. For example, if you buy Assassin's Creed Valhalla on Xbox One and then later buy an Xbox Series X, your new hardware will download the Series X version of the game. It should also transfer over any progress you've made via the cloud.

So far, EA has signaled that it won't offer full Smart Delivery support. Instead, you'll be able to upgrade to Madden NFL 21 on Xbox Series X for free if you buy the Xbox One version, but you'll need to do so by specific dates. There are no such restrictions on standard Smart Delivery games that we've heard of.

Take-Two is also apparently not going to make use of the program. NBA 2K21 will be priced at $70 on next-generation consoles and does not support cross-generation upgrading. The only exception to this is the $100 Mamba Edition, which does allow for an upgrade.

I don't see Titanfall 2 on the list. Does that mean Titanfall 2 will not work on the Xbox Series X? Does it mean I must repurchase Titanfall 2? It currently is just $5 so no big deal, but will my saved progress or gen level be preserved?

@Shantmaster_K: It was already available kind of. Xbox One X had smart delivery in that it would automatically add enhanced patches for Xbox one games or not add them if you are only installing them on base Xbox one or S. This is really just an extension of that but unfortunately EA is not going to participate at this stage.

I wonder if they'll work backward to expand the roster of supported titles over time, the way they have with the "X-enhanced" catalogue. That would certainly be nice.

This is a great move by Microsoft. I don't have to buy the same game twice if I upgrade from my Xbox One X to a Series X. The game will redownload and then automatically have the upgraded visuals/performance for the Series X. That's something that's happened on the PC gaming side since forever so a really good move.

That's awesome better than what Sony had with it's upgrade program with PS3 to PS4 for selected titles.

@pillarrocks: I remember in the first place Sony was pretty cool in that you got a free download of Flower and Journey for PS4 if you had the PS3 version.

Best. Pro Consumer. Move Ever.

PlayStation you better bring that to the PS5 for all the same titles. Ball is in your court.

@sabredj: Pretty much what I was going to say. Failure to bring this to PS5 could well be the make or break for Sony in the next gen race.

I have a feeling that it will be implemented though and, let's face it, it's something which the game developers are in control of rather than the console manufacturers. It's a good marketing strategy from Xbox though, I'll give them that.

@gotrekfabian:

Agreed, MS have been out there milking this, makes me think Sony isn’t there yet.

I wonder if it’s just for games this autumn or ongoing

@barcaazul: I'd imagine that it will be for the first year or so, possibly two but once discrepancies between current and next gen game prices occur they will undoubtedly stop. It would make no sense from a business perspective to be selling a game for less which could be patched to the same quality as next gen.

@gotrekfabian: Supply and demand. Older gen games would retain value because of the added utility.

@gotrekfabian: They would still do it on first party titles as there is to be a Series S as well as X so some will have the lesser machine that may not be able to handle higher res textures, ray tracing etc. I am hoping with all these features there are options to disable or enable things like on a PC . That way if there is any issue with framerate you can just disable ray tracing etc.
