Microsoft's new Netflix-style subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, is now available. For $10/month, subscribers can play more than 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games (via backwards compatibility) on Xbox One as much as they want for as long as the title is available. The catalog will be refreshed on a monthly basis as a small number games are added and others removed.

Why is there no Forza on this list?

Avatar image for Zavistic

Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara was the first game to be removed during the first few months.

Avatar image for deactivated-5ad5af79a96e8

I just don't get this Game Pass at all. It is like a big 'screw you' to anybody that buys games. Especially now that first party Microsoft Studio games are going to be available on release. I understand retailers are not too happy either, and shops are saying they are not going to bother stocking Xbox games. Because the Game Pass is just going to kill any trade, especially second hand games etc.

Again we seem to pander to the casual gamer. Yes it is value for money, but only if you don't buy games. Because anybody that buys games will have the majority of these titles already in their library.

@deactivated-5ad5af79a96e8: With Sony starting their own service and Nintendo testing the idea of streaming games (Resident Evil Biohazard in Japan), I doubt stores will stop selling games from platforms that stream games, unless they plan on quitting the video game biz altogether since everyone's doing it now.

Can you mark the Play Anywhere games?

Avatar image for Ripper_TV

They've said before they're gonna be removing some things eventually. This hasn't happened yet? Not 1 game has been removed to day, correct?

Avatar image for Zavistic

@Ripper_TV: Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara was the first to be removed during the third month I believe, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was only until 01 February 2018

Avatar image for angrycreep

@Zavistic: Bioshock games were remove. there are a few more that I can't remember now. The most interesting thing about this is that initially they say just 100 games and no more than that and the list right now is well over 100 games I think I counted 183

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@Ripper_TV: I think there have been a couple that were removed the 2nd or 3rd month after it launched.

For serious hardcore gamers the selection of games for the xbox one is paltry and lackluster. Most people would have already played these games when they first came out years ago or skipped them altogether due to poor quality. The xbox 360 library is pretty damn good as its filled with past AAA games and a chance to try out some gems from the past.

10$ a month?? not bad if its for a child or those getting their first xbox console / platform, there is no membership so you just buy a month for them (beware of automatic recurring payments) or let them try the free 14 trial.

I personally would pay more a month if they had AAA games less then one year old - you know, not halo 5 from 2015, barebones, pushing DLC constantly. Which is about the best offering they have for the xbox one on the list above.

Avatar image for angrycreep

@jenovaschilld: Well if you go and buy a game at the regular price of $60 you be paying about $65 with tax and you only paying all that for just one lousy game. $60 bucks will give 6 months and 100 games with this service to try. This can be very popular with parents looking to get a lot for cheap plus There are a lot kids games in there like the Banjo games. Is just $10 you can't complaint you getting a lot for just 10 bucks and kids don't care if the game came out 2 or 4 years ago they will still play

Avatar image for jenovaschilld

@angrycreep: Agree, what i said above. 10$ a month?? not bad if its for a child or those getting their first xbox console / platform, Still for hardcore gamers .... mileage may vary.

Avatar image for Ripper_TV

@jenovaschilld: This service is mainly for the new Xbox owners, I guess.

Avatar image for addoryan

Why is this in the PC section?

Avatar image for khanwashere

Would be nice to see and indication of which ones are X Enhanced.

Avatar image for Attitude2000

@khanwashere: There will be sorting in the "My Games" section of the dashboard

Avatar image for legendaryh1tman

This is such a great service. It makes for amazing gifts and if you are a parent like me. It gives your children tons of games to play for the cheap. Just make sure you got parental controls on if your strict about what content your child can play.

Avatar image for ef56sd

@legendaryh1tman: Thats where all the value is for me as well. My son now has access to a good percentage of the games he was always asking for.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@sellingthings: Yes that is so bad because there is no other way to buy or rent those games afterwards...oh wait, you can! How stupid (of you)!

Avatar image for legendaryh1tman

@sellingthings: What's stupid is that you didn't finish the game by the end of the 30 days of having it available.

Avatar image for Attitude2000

@sellingthings: Getting through Skyrim is subjective; it doesn't end even after you finish the main quest. There are however lots of games where you proceed through a certain amount of levels and you reach a finite ending. Going by various forums and videos on YouTube, as long as it isn't a sprawling RPG, it can take anywhere from 5 to 18 hours.

Avatar image for restatbonfire

@sellingthings: lol shut up

Avatar image for restatbonfire

@sellingthings: Nope.

Avatar image for ef56sd

@sellingthings: If youre going to invest that many hours into a game like Skyrim, then friggin but the game.

Avatar image for legendaryh1tman

@ef56sd: exactly

Avatar image for eternalrogue198

@sellingthings: how is that any different from netflix, 3 seasons into a show with 4 seasons left to watch and they announce its leaving in the next 4 weeks, the saving grace to this is that when a game is leaving the service it will leave at the end of the following month after they announce its leaving the service, giving you a month to finish the game, thats not stupid IMO!!

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@sellingthings: Besides maybe a few games, I don't see any I'd put more than 10 hours into. And if I were planning on putting more hours into it, say Halo 5, I'd just buy it.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@sellingthings: Whoops! And yes, they did, again, waaay too often.

Avatar image for blade256

@sellingthings: You can buy the game at a 20% discount.

Avatar image for darkelf83

@blade256 @sellingthings: Only to Xbox One games.

"The exclusive discount only applies while the base game is in the active catalog, and does not apply to backward compatible Xbox 360 base games or related add-ons." Game Pass FAQ

Avatar image for khanwashere

I wonder how or if the game pass library will effect the offerings paid subscribers to Gold will end up getting. I can see Microsoft putting a more popular AAA title in the paid rental service and leaving even worse titles to the Gold subscribers than they already do now.

Avatar image for AstroGazer

Tried Oblivion but the graphics on a 4k monitor are too dated - it needs a re-master.

Also, where's Command and Conquer 3 tiberium series??

Avatar image for onehitta323

Sega channel > Game Pass

Avatar image for lordstrategery

@onehitta323: I know you're just trolling, but you couldn't even save games on Sega Channel. It wasn't available for most of the US. Anyways, Atari had downloadable games under a subscription service first for the 2600.

Avatar image for expredator

Wait until a month passes by and they take off the popular games. Don't say I didn't tell you.

Avatar image for legendaryh1tman

@expredator: Just to be replaced with another popular game. You all not to bright huh?

Avatar image for deactivated-597646ec1539d

@expredator: The "popular" games are the first party titles such as Halo, Gears and Sunset Overdrive which will not be removed. The titles that will be removed are the third party titles where the licenses will eventually expire like they do on Netflix. So who cares if Farming Simulator and NBA get removed lol.

Avatar image for emptycow718

@expredator: wait till they add more GAmes . Not everyone can be lucky like PS4 suckers and stream games over the internet lol terrible .

Avatar image for lunchbox2042

Most of these games have already been given away free through GWG.

Avatar image for rmokeefe76

lol nice try

Avatar image for LPDisturbedHU

@lunchbox2042: That's a flat out lie.

Avatar image for sealionact

@lunchbox2042: 30 out of 115, so no...not most.

Avatar image for fallkan

Its a Solid deal. I often think back to the money my parents spent renting me games as a child. They would have saved a quarter of a mortgage with a deal like this and netflix.

Avatar image for preacher001

It's not the greatest lineup for us collector types but Netflix isn't much to look at when it opens in new regions either. It's a battle between needing subscriptions to get good games and needing good games to get subscriptions. Hopefully using Netflix's slow and steady approach will work for Microsoft too.

Game Pass has the right price so I'll probably look to jump on in about a year when the games list has grown to incorporate more AAA Xbox One titles.

Sidenote: If Microsoft can gain some ground here while growing it's Play Anywhere catalog they will be in the perfect place to stealth attack Steam. However, Steam would have to come pretty late to the streaming game to feel much initial impact. With Microsoft having millions of subscribers, many of which with PC buddies, that small jab could still be enough to grab them some pie. I can't imagine Microsoft getting more than a 2 year lead on Steam though, so they will have to get aggressive if they want to grow the service.
