All The 2017 Game Awards Nominees

Nintendo leads the way with 23 nominations overall.

The nominees for this year's Video Game Awards have been revealed. In total, 102 games and gaming personalities were nominated this year. Nintendo picked up the most nominations overall (23), with Sony (15), and Activision (7) following behind.

Game of the Year nominees include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, PUBG, Persona 5, and Horizon: Zero Dawn. Four games picked up six nominations to lead the way, including Destiny 2, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Super Mario Odyssey, and Breath of the Wild.

Super Mario Odyssey is among the nominees for Game of the Year
Super Mario Odyssey is among the nominees for Game of the Year

There is also a category for Most Anticipated Game, and the nominees this year include God of War, Spider-Man, Monster Hunter World, Red Dead Redemption II, and The Last of Us Part II. This is one of the categories that fans will get to vote on (more on that later).

The winners will be announced during The Game Awards on the evening of Thursday, December 7. Representatives from 51 global media outlets, including GameSpot and Giant Bomb, are voting to decide the winners of the mainline categories.

Anyone can vote on some of the categories, including Best Esports Team and Most Anticipated Game by typing "Game awards vote" into Google. Alternatively, you can vote through the event's website. You can see a full roundup of the 2017 nominees below, as posted on The Game Awards website and compiled by Den Of Geek.

In addition to awards, the broadcast will feature game announcements and new trailers, along with musical performances. New for the 2017 show is The Game Awards Orchestra, which is a group of "some of the world's most talented orchestral and rock musicians." These performers will be joined by "special guests," and they will perform video game music.

Additionally, there will be a "Game Awards Sale," which will see nominated games discounted on PSN, Xbox Live, and other platforms. The sale will run in early December.

Last year's event drew 8.5 million viewers, organizers said. Blizzard's hero shooter Overwatch took home the Game of the Year award in 2016.

Tickets for the 2017 event are on sale now here; they start at $40 and go all the way up to $200 for a VIP package that gets you a closer seat to the front, access to a pre-show reception, and a lot more. The show is organized by gaming industry veteran Geoff Keighley.

How was Persona 5 not nominated for Best Narrative? Too Japanese for the voters? Lame as all hell. Should have at least got a nod with how well they set up the characters and story.

It's going to be between Horizon and Zelda in most categories. And rightfully so, the two best games this year by a big margin.

A let-down for me is the lack of more nominations for Life is Strange 2, really great one.

Hmmm........

My GOTY personally, is Danganronpa 1-2 Reload for PS4!! Such an amazing series was introduced to me in the form of that wonderful 2-in-1 bundled delight and is packed to the brim with creepy mysteries, colorful & lifelike characters who all have their own unique personalities and traits, puns & hilarious banter that easily make this one of the most well written & expertly expressed by the actors voice acting. Another standout feature these games bring to the table is a stellar punk/acid rock/reggae styled soundtrack. Heaven to my ears. Also, by finding this one little game, I have become increasingly obsessed with the series and keep my eyes and ears open for any new news related to this series.

Anyways, runner up for GOTY in my opinion should be Yakuza 0. Although Yakuza Kiwami was the more recent game in the series reboot to be released, Yakuza 0 was much more of complete and whole experience whereas Kiwami seemed to struggle to keep up the pace. These along with Uncharted: Lost Legacy were my top most played games in 2017!!! Oh yeah, how could I forget, and also Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.

2017 will definitely go down as one of the best years in gaming history in terms of the number of 90%+ games that came out....although I wonder how many people will have actually played them!? And its interesting to me the choice of consoles selected as 2017 GOTY contenders. Two PS4 exclusives, two Nintendo Switch exclusives and one PC exclusive. So I literally can only play two of these (PS4) and I haven't played either of them. Oh well... :) But I plan to buy all 5 of these at some point over the years which is really the best part of GOTY awards for me....I don't have time to play a lot of different games so these awards whittle down the selection process for me quite a bit. Glad for Nintendo to have a strong 2017 after a pretty tough couple of years post Wii-U. It will be interesting if they can keep it up or is it just a two hit wonder? Still enough for me to want to buy a switch though....Also happy for PS4 which is looking to have a strong 2018 as well with God of War and Last of Us 2. Xbox One didn't get a GOTY spot but I don't think an Xbox Exclusive hasn't won a GOTY since 2006 with Gears of War.

PUBG, an early access and unfinished game, gets an nomination best ongoing game? An award, designed to award those who have supported the game with continuous updates long after the initial release hype is nominated by a game that hasn't been released.

It'll be interesting if GOTY 2017 is an early access game.

I think it's very poor to allow an unfinished game like PUBG to compete this year, don't get me wrong I know it's beloved but it's still in early access.

I hope Cuphead wins every category it's nominated in.

@7tizz: No but there's a big difference to having patches to smooth over game performance and being an early access game and being entirely incomplete. The game is essentially in an ongoing beta.

I'm not disputing the quality of the game, I've heard it's very good - I'm waiting for the Xbox version to come out so I can try it for myself. But hy not wait for it's retail release next year when it might be in with a better chance of winning. I think Cuphead or Resident Evil 7 should have taken its place this year personally.

@graffitiheart: Because by then much of it popularity will be gone and while people will still be playing it no doubt, the hype will be gone and noone in their right minds would think to nominate it for Goty. It's fresh now and exciting, in 1 years time it will be old news.

"Best ongoing game".

The fact that this is even a category says a lot about the current video game landscape.

@Prats1993: That category is actually good, it is good to dedicate a separate category to games that release content in chunks. The problem is to nominate games both for that category AND for game of the year.

Why do they have the awards so early into december? Last year they had the awards before The Last Guardian came out and it didn’t even get nominated. Was hoping for it to be nominated this year instead but I guess not? Strange.

@valgaav_219: i enjoyed p5 quite a bit, but i don't think it was as good as p4 or even p3 in some ways. the dungeons were far better in p5, but the story (very repetitive and drawn own) and characters were lacking compared to the former personas in my opinion. i would gladly hand p5 the best rpg of the year, but not the best game of the year.

@Xristophoros: Disagree 100%. I put hundreds of hours into all three of those games. Beat P3/FES a combined four times, P4/P4G a combined six times, and went through P5 three times (so far). And I gotta say, Persona 5 was easily the best of the bunch to me. I was surprised too, since I loved Persona 4 Golden so much. I had high hopes for P5, but it took my high expectations and completely shattered them. While the characters were awesome in P4, I felt a much larger affinity and a much better connection with the cast in Persona 5. The stories they went through were very real and hit home quite a few times. It was a fantastic take on society as a whole, which I find refreshing.

While it can get a bit draggy at parts, I was blown away so much by the style, gameplay, and characterization that I just didn't care. It also helps that the Protagonist isn't as much a drab piece of emotionless wood like the other games. He clearly has a personality and a style that actually makes him stand out from the rest of the silent protagonists in the series.

To me P5 isn't just what I consider the best game of the year. It is hands down my favorite game period. I have no complaints what so ever.

@Orga777: that's cool... i rarely replay jrpgs. not only is it a huge time commitment, but each playthrough lessons the emotional impact so i like to leave them as one time experiences. the only jrpgs i ever replayed were xenogears and chrono cross.

anyways, back to p5... no doubt, it was a more polished version of p3 and p4... but i feel like atlus played it a bit safe with p5 and didn't experiment with any new ideas or mechanics... the only thing they added was the guns and they were optional most of the time and didn't incorporate new strategy to the mix much at all. i enjoyed the game, but i am at the point now where i don't think i am willing to invest another 100 hours into a new persona game unless it is vastly different than p5. i hate to say it but for me, the series is starting to become stale... i honestly don't know where atlus goes from here, but i think another long break would be the best thing for the series right now so that they reinvent it. i believe the team is working on a new ip next -- a jrpg set in a fantasy setting -- so that should be really interesting!

anyways, don't get me wrong, i enjoyed my time with p5 a lot. it is a solid 8.5 out of 10 in my books and most definitely the best jrpg of the year. i was just expecting it to be a bit more "fresh" and bring some new ideas to the table. it didn't quite deliver on my expectations in that respect. still, it is likely the best jrpg since... well, since p4 :D

@texasgoldrush: Yep, P5 was just a stylish rehash of P4. Divinity Original Sin 2 is literally the only proper "role-playing game" in that category not to mention the best one.

@Prats1993: Er... Not really a rehash at all. Similar ideas, but that usually happens inside franchises. Persona 4 is all about how great justice is, fighting the darkness inside yourself, and to search for the truth that is shrouded by ignorance. Persona 5 is about how "justice" can beat on the innocent, people being treated unfairly by generalizations and taken advantage of by those in power, and rebelling against the system that allows that to happen.

ROTFL. These nominations are pathetic? Ridiculous? Enormous mistake? You name it.

Only one nomination for Original Sin 2 is unacceptable. Also since when expansion is now full game (XCOM2: War of the Chosen)? Mario + Rabbids nomination for best strategy game!? Are you fvcking serious!?? Nomination for Halo Wars 2 when we have gems like Ultimate General: Civil War? Where's Endless Space 2? Oh wait, for a moment I expected mainstream casuals to know something about niche PC-centered genre. Sorry.

@Prats1993: Only way the first was superior was boss fights. 2 is overall the better game honestly.

Jesus christ, like I said last TGA article, the actual awards are a joke. PUBG for game of the year, Destiny 2 for literally anything? Have people stopped taking these seriously yet, and if not, what the hell would it take?

@patsfan365: I'm surprised myself by the exclusion of certain titles in the GOTY category. Why can't Wolfenstein 2 be there? Why can't RE7, Nioh, Nier: Automata, Destiny 2, etc... be considered for the title? Even though I personally wouldn't have something like Call of Duty up there why can't it be a nominee for GOTY? Why is it just those 5 titles?

Let’s face it, this is Zelda’s show to lose. As much as many out there would looove for one of the other many deserving nominees to take home the big prize Zelda is the name on everyone’s lips. Not only is it a deserving nominee but it is a critical darling of not just gamers but the gaming website/media/journalism world.

Currently right now it sits at a mighty 97 on Metacritic, a feat that very few games in history have been able to achieve. There’s a reason for my apprehension that anything else (other than possibly Super Mario Odyssey.) will give it a run for its money and its only compounded by the fact that many of the reviews that came out at the time of its launch not only heralded it as GOTY but actually went so far as to claim it was the best game made in over 10 years.

With that being said I feel that if any game is going to challenge it for the crown it will come from none other than the king of videogames himself, Mario. Not only has Mario garnered a heap of praise since its launch but like Zelda it sits snuggly at a 97 on Metacritic as well. The other thing it has going for it is that Mario is more mainstream than Zelda and while there have been many people who have sneered at the high praise it has received deep down inside all of us gamers Mario taking away the top spot at any awards show (even if it was undeserving.) isn’t really a slap in gamers face as many perceive Mario as representing the gaming genre as a whole.

I think if it came down to these 2 contenders more hardcore gamers would gravitate towards Zelda but honestly at the end of the day this is almost like flipping a coin. Factor in all the usual gaming award conspiracies (has to be multiplatform, whatever sells the most units, companies who have the most wealth & push.) and it just makes trying to accurately predict who’s walking away the winner that much murkier.

What WOULD be a huge surprise would be if neither of these titles took home the big prize. If a title like Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Wolfenstein 2, Resident evil 7 (Hey, a Ninja can dream, right?) walked away the winner I think gamers around the world would be in shock. And you know what, I don’t think that would necessarily be a bad thing.

-AND THE WINNER IS… NINJA APPROVED-

@videogameninja: No, it would be a bad thing.

Simply put, Zelda and Mario had the best games of the year. P5 should not be even nominated and HZD is just another outdated open world game that Zelda quickly hushed.

@texasgoldrush: Persona & Horizon certainly deserve to be nominated, the game that really shouldn't be there is PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds since it's still in Early Access.

I'd replace that with either Nier: Automata or Wolfenstein 2
