All of Battlefield 1's Modes and Maps Confirmed

A total of ten maps revealed, including the one coming for free in December.

With Battlefield 1's release approaching, EA and DICE continue to confirm details about its World War I shooter. Following yesterday's release of the game's PC specs, today we learned all of the modes and maps that will launch with the game.

There will be nine maps out of the gate, including Sinai Desert, which beta players will already be well acquainted with. Among the other locations are a French chateau (Ballroom Blitz), a forest in France (Argonne Forest), and an Ottoman fortress (Fao Fortress). You can see images and read official descriptions for all of these below.

Nine maps in the base game would mean Battlefield 1 has one less than Battlefield 4, though a tenth, Giant's Shadow, is on the way to Battlefield 1 for free in December.

On the modes side, there are six in the base game, including the obligatory Conquest and Rush, along with new additions like Operations and War Pigeons. Descriptions for all six modes also follow below, though you won't see any word on team sizes in Team Deathmatch--the official Twitter account says that will be announced "closer to the launch."

EA's pages for the maps and modes each have a tile saying to "check back for more." A tweet describes these as "every map and mode shipping with Battlefield 1," so that tease may be referring to content that will come as part of the game's premium DLC.

No Caption Provided

Following the beta, DICE has revealed some of the changes it's making based on player feedback, including changes to Conquest scoring, Rush, and vehicle balancing.

Read on for the official descriptions of Battlefield 1's maps and modes.

Maps

Ballroom Blitz: Join the final offensives along the Meuse River in 1918. Here, fierce fighting in trench lines is quickly replaced by the untouched beauty beyond hell. A massive French chateau, previously home to officers beyond the rear lines, is now the scene for a battle with both tanks and flamethrowers. The chandeliers are shaking from the barrage as the American forces push for the final railway hub at the edge of this map.

Argonne Forest: The shadowy depths of the Argonne forest is the scene for some of the most brutal close quarter combat in Battlefield 1. The world inside this forest features devious defensive setups combined with a labyrinth of bunkers and machine gun nests. Camouflaged field guns firing at point blank range, Stormtroopers clearing out bunkers with gas, and the best use of sharpened spades will determine who owns the depths of this forest. Heroes are forged surviving the intensity of this infantry-focused map.

Fao Fortress: Join one of the earliest amphibious landings of the Great War as the British Empire struggles to secure the oil on the Al-Faw Peninsula. The majestic Ottoman fortress of Fao guards the entrance and is not falling uncontested. Here you will fight through marshlands and dunes, over bridges and shallow coves. The assault finally enters the ancient fortress itself. The quest for oil begins here. The Dreadnought needs to feed.

Suez: A struggle for the most vital supply line of World War I. Even though it was considered impossible, the Ottomans crossed the desert of Sinai and threatened the canal. Join the fight by the banks of the grand canal and make tactical use of the dunes. Fight through shallow defenses, with field guns or mortars, through the outskirts of Kantara and into the deep desert beyond.

The St. Quentin Scar: A massive attack on the scarred battlefields of northern France. As part of the Kaiser's battle, the German army throws everything they have to try to break through the British lines. Prepare for truly cataclysmic assaults as you push through the trenches of the St. Quentin Scar. Be the first soldier to break through the fortified lines and assault the pristine village of Travecy, untouched by the war… until now.

Sinai Desert: Engage in all-out war in Sinai Desert, a scorching hot battlefield located just East of El-Jifar. From infantry skirmishes in the narrow streets of the village of Bir el Mazar to dogfights above the majestic cliffs, you’ll need to make tactical use of the dunes as you engage in explosive battles. When all hope is lost, reinforcements will arrive in the shape of a powerful Behemoth: a deadly Armored Train charging through the desert sands.

Amiens: A destructive clash in a majestic city. Fight on the streets and squares in French city of Amiens during the German spring offensive. A struggle in crumbling alleys, a courthouse, around bridges and railways where the British and the Germans desperately seek to control the depths of the city.

Monte Grappa: Take part in one of the final battles among the peaks of kings in the Venetian Alps. High up above the clouds a desperate fight for control of mountain forts are challenging even the toughest soldiers. Utilize the massive fort cannons to stop the advancing enemies as they scale the mountainside. Up here, in this furious struggle, the Austro Hungarian Empire holds the upper hand, but the Italian Army won't stop until they've taken back what's theirs.

Empire's Edge: Along the Adriatic coast a fierce struggle for land and life is taking place. A rugged but fortified shore becomes the battlefield for an empire under siege. What was once a beautiful Mediterranean village by the coast is now transformed by mechanized war, where waves and dreadnought battleships pound the remains of Italy's Great War.

Giant's Shadow: Prepare to take part in the Battle of the Selle in the cold autumn of 1918. Here, the fighting moves out of the trenches and into open country where a massive crashed airship casts its shadow onto the battlefield. The British forces have broken through the Hindenburg line and are now in pursuit towards an important railway center. Fierce infantry and tank engagements ensue on the open ground and river banks alongside the Cateu-Wassigny railway where an armored train can still turn the tide. Giant's Shadow will be coming to Battlefield 1 as part of a free update in December.

Modes

Conquest: An all-time fan favorite of Battlefield players, Conquest is a large-scale game mode with up to 64 players fighting for the control of key objectives. With large armies on foot or behind the wheel and the addition of fearsome Behemoths, Conquest brings together all the elements of the signature Battlefield all-out war.

Domination: Domination offers a fast-paced infantry focused combat in close quarter locations. It’s a smaller, but more focused version of Conquest, and the fighting revolves around strategic objectives. Ready your shotgun and sharpen your hatchet--in the Domination game mode things tend to get close and personal.

Operations: Operations offer epic journeys across several maps based upon real battles of World War I. We wanted to offer a large and epic experience with a focus on teamplay and frontline combat. Adding this meta-layer to the game mode, and stretching it across multiple interesting locations that both look and play very differently, adds a whole new layer of scale and variety to the battles in Battlefield 1. Your team can win on one map, proceed to the next map, and actually see the map you previously fought over on the horizon.

Rush: Communications and artillery were crucial during World War I, and Rush mode will have you interacting with both of them. In Rush, the attacking forces must find and destroy the defending force's Telegraph Posts, which the defenders can use to call in artillery strikes. The Defenders can deny the attackers by disarming the explosives they plant, but should the Telegraph Posts be destroyed, the defenders must fall back to another sector. The attackers win the battle if the Telegraph Positions in every sector are destroyed. The defenders come out victorious if they're able to run the attackers out of reinforcements, or by having at least one Telegraph Position left intact when time runs out.

War Pigeons: During the Great War, man-made communication systems were still crude and unreliable, so dogs and pigeons were used extensively to carry messages. In the War Pigeons game mode the opposing sides compete to use messenger pigeons to call in artillery barrages on the enemy. When the game starts, a pigeon coop with a messenger pigeon is placed somewhere on the map. Locate the pigeon before the enemy and carry it to a safe location out in the open. There you prepare a message and send it off, calling for artillery support. Once a message is successfully sent an artillery barrage will strike the enemy.

Team Deathmatch: In many ways World War I changed the notion of how war was fought, but the end goal was still to inflict as much damage as possible to force the enemy to surrender. Team Deathmatch hones in on the brutal simplicity of infantry warfare: kill or be killed. This mode pits your side against the enemy and you need to defeat as many enemies as possible while protecting yourself and your team mates. At regular intervals a powerful Elite Class weapon is dropped somewhere on the map. Grab it to get the upper hand in terms of firepower. The winning side is the one that inflicts the most casualties to the enemy. If the timer runs out, the team that has killed the most enemies win.

Warning: nationalist rant incoming...

At least 3 of these maps (Argonne Forest, Ballroom Blitz and Giant's Shadow) were all battles fought by America, a country which only showed up in the last year of the war and contributed very little to this conflict compared to the size of its population.

Meanwhile the Canadians which were the best Allied troops (together with Australians) get no maps for 1) 2nd Ypres (first major use of gas in a war, and the Canadians withstood it and held the line by pissing in their handkerchiefs to let them breathe even as their friends were barfing up their stomachs besides them - a rolling gas attack would make for an epic Rush map); 2) Vimy Ridge (first major Allied victory of 1917 - charging a ridge under artillery cover would make an epic map); 3) Passchendaele (nightmare mud landscape that swallowed people and horses whole - again, very iconic map); 4) Any of Canada's canal assault operations in the last hundred days of the war would make for great maps with interesting mixes of ranges and sight lines...

Meanwhile America fights in one forest in the whole war and it is automatically, by default, of course, "the scene for some of the most brutal close quarter combat in Battlefield 1". Because everything America experiences is always worse, and more important, and more epic, than anything anyone else anyone goes through. I mean people hacking each other to death in neck deep mud at Passcendaele had nothing on that one American Forest.

The world has certainly always admired Hollywood's expertise at constantly rewriting history to put America front and center in every major world event (sure DICE is Swedish but it receives its marketing marching orders from EA in California).

Thus in the interests of pumping US sales, we end up with a World War One game that has an American of all people on its cover. Not even gonna comment on his skin colour. And this is the same cover for all editions of the game around the world.

Battlefield has turned into a casual kiddie game. Don't expect adult Tactical Teamwork Battlefield games anymore. EA/DICE has to catch up to Call of Duty games in sales, or Battlefield is toast.

Moms, Dads and the kiddies are where the money is for gaming today. EA is all about profits now... not great games.

Sounds like an excellent base game! Even though it should all just be included from the start or it should at least not cost as much, I can't wait to see what all of the DLC will bring later on!

I hope there is a decent mode other than conquest/rush. Honestly I think conquest is a pretty bad mode, doesn't promote teamwork or have any kind of flow, basically just CoD domination on a bigger scale with tanks.

I wish they would bring back the attack/defend conquest mode that older BF games had.

No campaign confirmed. Same scheme as with all EA games from 2014 and beyond: only 4 multiplayer maps, no campaign, $60. They're surely pretty though. Frostbite seems to pull the prettiest games at the moment.

@dinosaur_teeth: Most fans don't even bothering with it. I never got around to completing any of the campaigns. Those were produced to compete fully with CoD. The original games were just MP. You could play SP with AI on the maps, if you liked. Medal Of Honor was campaign focused, then Battlefield came and blew the doors off of the infantry-based MP.

@theduckofdeath: That's a load of bollocks, because pretty much everyone I know who has gotten a shooter has played the campaigns, BF included. Having said that, I haven't bought a BF game since Bad Company 2. The series has reached it's peak and fallen sharply, in trying to match COD. However, the WW1 setting intrigues me and makes me wonder what the sp game will be like.

@theduckofdeath: They're worth a romp through. They showcase the engine, more then prepare you for multiplayer. I think that's the problem with the campaigns, you can't really use them as trainers, they feel like entire separate games.

Sounding very promising. I just hope that we don't see any pokey small maps like Hardline gave us. I don't mind close quarter combat like the trenches will give us but a map that simply draws a line in the middle that has people camping on its corners and sniping is not something I want to see again.

I'm particularly looking forward to seeing a military 'coo' in War Pigeons mode. (Sorry, someone had to say it though!)

People like to use this franchise as a placeholder for all they want in an FPS shooter, but also use it as a martyr as such for where it lacks - I for one LOVE Battlefield, and after seeing them cater to Battlefield 4 and correct its wrongs (which it still has some), I trust DICE this time, and simply look forward to the experience. The good, and the bad.

@Smosh150: Tigg3r (DICE employee) has verified that Rush will have customization for player count. In other words, the official servers will have a number of 12 slots, per side, and a number of 24 per side, and a number of 32 per side - server admins (no word on HOW PC admin works) will have the option to change player slots themselves.
