Aliens vs. Predator banned in Australia

[UPDATE] Sega and Rebellion's xenomorph-versus-hunter-versus-marines reboot refused classification down under; censor cites explicit violence.

In the '80s-era action film Predator, Austrian beefcake and now California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger famously quipped, "If it bleeds, we can kill it." It seems Australia's Classification Board didn't like the amount of bleeding present in Sega and Rebellion's upcoming Aliens vs. Predator reboot for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, effectively banning the game down under by refusing it classification.

The latest banning comes in the same week that the massively multiplayer online game CrimeCraft was refused classification for showing positive effects from in-game drug use. In Aliens vs. Predator's case, however, it seems violence was the key offender, with a Classification Board spokesperson confirming to GameSpot AU that the game's bloody content was to blame.

Sega Australia has confirmed the banning and has not ruled out appealing the decision. "SEGA Australia can today confirm that the initial submission of Aliens vs Predator has been refused classification by the Classification Operations Board of Australia. We will continue to investigate all options available to us, including the possibility of appeal," the company said in a statement.

In previous game bans in Australia, some developers have opted to make changes to their games in order to pass the classification process. The most recent example is the toned-down version of Left 4 Dead 2. Valve was forced to release the revised edition down under when the original, unedited version was banned.

GameSpot AU has requested a full copy of the board's decision but had not received it at the time of publication.

[UPDATE] The Classification Board has now released its official ruling to GameSpot AU, and Aliens vs. Predator's high-impact violence was indeed a motivating factor for the ban.

"The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment as well as locational damage such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes," the board report stated.

"Characters can be stabbed with a Predator's wrist blade or an Alien's tail in depictions reminiscent of impalement. The Predator collects 'trophies' by explicitly ripping off human heads, their spinal columns dangling from severed necks. Heads can be twisted completely around in order to break a character's neck. Eyes can be stabbed through or gouged, leaving empty, bloodied eye sockets.

"It is noted that a player is able to combine manoeuvres together in quick succession, which further increases impact; for example, a Predator can stab a character through both eyes with its wrist blade and rip off their head, with spinal column still attached. Extensive post-mortem damage, including decapitation and dismemberment, is also possible."

I couldn't really be f**ked writing a comment on this, because our Australian government is a waste of breathe. But, I'm not really surprised at all, It's just going to get worse to the point no more games will see the light of day in Australia. So all gamers make a stand, Import those banned games and stop voting for these slack ass politicians!!!

I doubt all the Australians I played on Far Cry 2 didn't pirate the game. So why this game? I think kids understand that for the most part, the aliens are the bad guy and whatever is brutal in the game is there to reinforce that idea.

By doing this, then this game will reach number 1 spot on the Australian Charts for most pirated. I imagine Sega is pissed, they were prob anticipating big sales on this, especially since it's coming out on all major platforms. Michael Atkinson thinks he's doing good. Little does he know that his actions are in fact immature and biased.

This is ridiculous, I was looking forward to this game so much. God, I hate Michael Atkinson. It's his fault that the Classification Board is forced to make these decisions.

Wait are any of these board of classifiers even government officials? I mean are they like the FBI, IRS, ROP, Homeland Security, any thing along those lines. I would hope that if they where then that explains why we even care what they have to say regardless if your a gamer, a parent, or even a politician. Their supposed to regulate our safety, but WTF is that supposed to mean. Games are fictional. If you have to scape goat a video game for what some one did, then you've obviously had these issues before the game and just finally snapped. I say regulate the regulators. Adults should be able to buy WETF they want. Come on people 16 year olds get to drink in Germany. ITS JUST A GAME NOT OUR LIVES. CAN'T WE ALL JUST PLAY TOGETHER. . .

if i lived in AU i would already bought a u.s xbox online and buying every game online....... always banning games untill they get there way, over priced on the games, there goverment thinks to much harm comes from a picture on a screen. i guess this is what you get when they make it where you can buy M rated game at age 15 if they so worried about it why not up it to 18 or even 21 if they care so freaken much. what ever they are hurting there own by doing so people will buy online out of there country and sending there money somewhere else... vs trying keep money inside

Hang on, we had Alien Vs Predator games before without any worries. What the heck is going on with our Classification Board? If this is banned I will just import it in. No point in keeping my money in my own country, since I lost respect for this country a long time ago.

Man it would suck to not be able to play the full version and just a tone-down version of any game, feel bad for our Aussis friends. I understand why they would banned a game like CrimeCraft, but AvP common its science fiction, off course there's shooting and blood and acid, but is still science fiction, no one gonna go out and starts shooting aliens or camouflage predators with plasma bolts on they'r shoulders!

This issue of banning games in Australia has been a top that has arrisen quite a lot over the past month and a half. Censors need to really think on what they are restricting the industry to create. Now days futuristic, shooter, slashers are in, with heaps of blood and gore to enhance the realism. With a R18+ rating games such as the Untoned down verson of L4D2, AvP and many more games that were banned to get released can get handeld under the close watch of the retailers who sell the games. IE; Proof of Age card, or drivers licence. Come on Australia, get with the times, we need this classification.

The People's Republic of Australia strikes again! But seriously, this is getting so ridiculous that we might as well stop calling a game being refused classification in Australia "news." Oh well. Elections are coming up soon down there, I think. This is the time for Australian gamers to give their voice more power by voting against Australia's resident overzealous Moral Guardian of the Universe. You guys will never get an 18 rating as long as that asshat remains in office. Unless he somehow decides it is best to remove his head from his ass and actually try to UNDERSTAND gaming instead of blindly attacking it, but I don't see that happening; his type are too stubborn to admit that they really don't know what the hell they are talking about.

I thought i should point out, this is doing more harm to the Aussie distributors than the Aussie gamers. We are quite capable of buying overseas. Infact, due to the ridiculous mark-up some games get when they make it to Aus, many of us do this regardless of classification. :P

Hypocrites!! There's ads on the TV all the time telling Australian's to "buy local to help the economy" then they go do this so we are "forced" to import! Kind of stupid since Games is one of the biggest entertainment industries at the moment. Can't wait to move back to UK.

I feel for you gamers in Australia. It is an awful shame to to live under those conditions. Personal freedom seems like such a oxymoron these days. Out of curiosity, is the News banned as well. As there is no contention to violence and video games, how do they legitimize this. Is there not more violence related to alcohol and money then there is video games. Let the gamers unit, can you imagine, an island run by gamers. You get the best Simcity player to be mayor. All the FPS can set up security. The RPG'ers can run around gathering.... wait a minute... we would all be playing and have not a care in the world. Welcome to utopia lol

*sigh* Becoming harder and harder to be proud of being an Aussie. Oh well, more money for over seas distributors. We can only hope that Aus stores/online distributors get sick of missing out on money and join the fight to bring us an R18+ rating.
