Aliens vs. Predator banned in Australia

[UPDATE] Sega and Rebellion's xenomorph-versus-hunter-versus-marines reboot refused classification down under; censor cites explicit violence.

In the '80s-era action film Predator, Austrian beefcake and now California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger famously quipped, "If it bleeds, we can kill it." It seems Australia's Classification Board didn't like the amount of bleeding present in Sega and Rebellion's upcoming Aliens vs. Predator reboot for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, effectively banning the game down under by refusing it classification.

The latest banning comes in the same week that the massively multiplayer online game CrimeCraft was refused classification for showing positive effects from in-game drug use. In Aliens vs. Predator's case, however, it seems violence was the key offender, with a Classification Board spokesperson confirming to GameSpot AU that the game's bloody content was to blame.

Sega Australia has confirmed the banning and has not ruled out appealing the decision. "SEGA Australia can today confirm that the initial submission of Aliens vs Predator has been refused classification by the Classification Operations Board of Australia. We will continue to investigate all options available to us, including the possibility of appeal," the company said in a statement.

In previous game bans in Australia, some developers have opted to make changes to their games in order to pass the classification process. The most recent example is the toned-down version of Left 4 Dead 2. Valve was forced to release the revised edition down under when the original, unedited version was banned.

GameSpot AU has requested a full copy of the board's decision but had not received it at the time of publication.

[UPDATE] The Classification Board has now released its official ruling to GameSpot AU, and Aliens vs. Predator's high-impact violence was indeed a motivating factor for the ban.

"The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment as well as locational damage such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes," the board report stated.

"Characters can be stabbed with a Predator's wrist blade or an Alien's tail in depictions reminiscent of impalement. The Predator collects 'trophies' by explicitly ripping off human heads, their spinal columns dangling from severed necks. Heads can be twisted completely around in order to break a character's neck. Eyes can be stabbed through or gouged, leaving empty, bloodied eye sockets.

"It is noted that a player is able to combine manoeuvres together in quick succession, which further increases impact; for example, a Predator can stab a character through both eyes with its wrist blade and rip off their head, with spinal column still attached. Extensive post-mortem damage, including decapitation and dismemberment, is also possible."

It's banned because it has aliens killing humans? Are the movies banned in Australia as well? I certainly hope so, because if they aren't, that's called "double-standard". You can't ban one and not the other.

I can understand adding a blood & gore adjuster so that you can turn it off or lower it but a complete ban is a little weird to me. I personally feel that they should add this to all games for those of us with kids around during the day time.

Warm up those credit cards guys, because here's another game you'll just have to import if you live in Aussie. Still wondering when their ratings system will catch up with the rest of the world. It's not like Australians are bred to be overly sensitive or anythiing...

glad I live on the other side of the tasman. Australia really needs a r18. if a game is just about banned every month there must be something wrong.

Urgh!!!!!!!!! Words cannot express how p****ed off this makes me! A perfectly good game with such an exciting combination, Aliens and Predators and Marines, and it gets banned in Australia because the halfwits in charge are repressed and cannot possibly understand that by introducing a R18 for games, it would go a long way of preventing any game that starts getting a little too gory from being banned in this country. Australia is such a backwards country with it's unfair and inconsistent rulings.... and it's only videogames that seem to get isolated like this. What was the last movie that was banned in Australia? Anyone?

As an Aussie I'm extremely frustrated by the banning of yet another promising title, but the ongoing generalisations of the forum community here seem woefully misinformed. Classifying all Australians as idiots, back in the dark ages and so on isn't helpful and certainly does nothing to address the issue at hand. If you wish to gloat go ahead, but you just make yourself look stupid if you do it based on false information. Just so people understand once again, the primary issue is that the Australian classification board does not have an R18+ rating for video games. The discussions necessary to establish one continue to be prevented by the South Australian attorney general Michael Atkinson, as the decision to create one requires a unanimous verdict from the attorneys general of all of the states and territories of Australia. In effect, the beliefs of this single individual and a small but vocal group of supporters is the sole obstacle to the creation of an R18+ rating for video games thus allowing games such as Alien vs Predator to be sold here. It is most definitely a flaw in the legal processes involved, but unless they are changed - something unlikely in the current political "climate" (haha) - or the SA attorney general is voted out of office, this current impediment to Australian gamers will persist. On a positive note, there are convenient loopholes in digital distribution mechanisms such as Steam which allow Aussies to access most banned content :)

So we can get a license to drive at 16, drink at 18, yet no matter how old we get, we can only play games rated for 15 years or younger. It's quite embarrasing these days to be Australian.

The nation that was founded on the wholesome values of being a prison will not accept this. Really? I'd get out of Australia now. It seems like the government is so petty and fickle that they're doing this for some sort of political agenda. I wouldn't be surprised if they're asking for bribes or will start asking for bribes to get games passed. This just seems like a really bad sign. The silencing of something like this seems to be the signs of a totalitarian government. Getting out of such a place before they start banning clothing with bright colors and speech that does not concur with the government is key. I don't even think the Catholic Church has tried this hard to go against video games. This just seems to be some irrational censoring based on some set of random morals. I don't even know how to properly state how stupid this is. It's not just a mistake, it's pure stupidity. I was going to call it retarded, but that doesn't accurately describe this and is insulting to those who are retarded. I think it just sounds crazy. The fact that it is part of the government is saying this is just scary.

So are the Alien and Predator movies banned as well? I'm pretty sure most of these violent acts are committed in the various films. Come on Australia, quit giving games the special treatment. I feel sorry for Aussie gamers that have to put up with this hyper sensitive censorship crap.

dkslade said, "does australia do the same to other media like movies and music?" No. Movies and music flow freely into this Country, it's only our games that are governed so heavily. It's mainly due to the fact we lack an R rating (Adults Only rating) for games.... because our Government are sitting around j***ing each other off and won't pass a simple law

Someone seriously needs to get rid of these lameo's deciding what people can or can't do in a videogame. One day soon the people in charge will be gamers too. Playing Call of Duty 10, there not going to stand for this forever.

Every time I see something like this, I'm reminded of that episode of Family Guy where the FCC tries to sensor real life. The sheer stupidity of it all would be hilarious if it wasn't for the reality of the situation--a panel of halfwits is denying an entire country the right to play a friggin' video game, because apparently, they're the judge and jury of what the population should or should not be allowed to see.

By banning games, all they are doing is forcing legitimate customers to import from overseas, or turn to piracy. As long as Michael Atkinson is sitting comfy as the AG in SA, we will not see any ratings change in the near future.

I'll bet the game studios love it when their games are banned. Its free publicity with no profit associated. It will make everyone want to go get the most violent game E-VER, find out they can't buy it, and then download it for free. As far as violence in Australia is concerned, when my buddy went to visit his cousins, they took him out hunting. They proceeded to gun down kangaroos with automatic weapons, a whole bunch of them, cut their tails off and take them home to feed their dogs, etc. He showed me the pictures, pretty bloody affair. Not sure if as bloody as a predator killing an alien, but to each his own.

Blah blah blah, everybody should have already seen this coming as well as other violent video games, maybe one day they'll pass that R18 gaming law or whatever it is, sucks to live there especially if you have no freedom over what video games you can play, I thought parents were supposed to do that. The title for this article should be, Australia bans yet another violent video game, nothing new to report here.

Okay this is getting beyond the joke...censor some animated blood, yet i can watch the news, movies or go on youtube and see much worse. Also, its okay for us to have an Alcohol/drinking culture here where young people can get 'trashed' and stuff and it be cool but oooh noo we gotta protect them video game violence! Blah...i love this country but this is seriously getting out of control...
