Aliens vs. Predator banned in Australia

[UPDATE] Sega and Rebellion's xenomorph-versus-hunter-versus-marines reboot refused classification down under; censor cites explicit violence.

In the '80s-era action film Predator, Austrian beefcake and now California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger famously quipped, "If it bleeds, we can kill it." It seems Australia's Classification Board didn't like the amount of bleeding present in Sega and Rebellion's upcoming Aliens vs. Predator reboot for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, effectively banning the game down under by refusing it classification.

The latest banning comes in the same week that the massively multiplayer online game CrimeCraft was refused classification for showing positive effects from in-game drug use. In Aliens vs. Predator's case, however, it seems violence was the key offender, with a Classification Board spokesperson confirming to GameSpot AU that the game's bloody content was to blame.

Sega Australia has confirmed the banning and has not ruled out appealing the decision. "SEGA Australia can today confirm that the initial submission of Aliens vs Predator has been refused classification by the Classification Operations Board of Australia. We will continue to investigate all options available to us, including the possibility of appeal," the company said in a statement.

In previous game bans in Australia, some developers have opted to make changes to their games in order to pass the classification process. The most recent example is the toned-down version of Left 4 Dead 2. Valve was forced to release the revised edition down under when the original, unedited version was banned.

GameSpot AU has requested a full copy of the board's decision but had not received it at the time of publication.

[UPDATE] The Classification Board has now released its official ruling to GameSpot AU, and Aliens vs. Predator's high-impact violence was indeed a motivating factor for the ban.

"The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment as well as locational damage such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes," the board report stated.

"Characters can be stabbed with a Predator's wrist blade or an Alien's tail in depictions reminiscent of impalement. The Predator collects 'trophies' by explicitly ripping off human heads, their spinal columns dangling from severed necks. Heads can be twisted completely around in order to break a character's neck. Eyes can be stabbed through or gouged, leaving empty, bloodied eye sockets.

"It is noted that a player is able to combine manoeuvres together in quick succession, which further increases impact; for example, a Predator can stab a character through both eyes with its wrist blade and rip off their head, with spinal column still attached. Extensive post-mortem damage, including decapitation and dismemberment, is also possible."

The hypocritical thing with the game description is that it doesn't mention that it's as horrible when others than humans get "mutilated". But honestly I didn't think there were still countries that ban games and movies. And one last thing, I have been playing and watching violent games and films since I was 5 or something now I'm almost 19 and as far as I know, I am most likely the calmest and most polite person amongst my freinds and co-workers, why? because games don't kill people, people kill people.

I left New Zealand for Australia to avoid 'Nanny State" politics, now it's being rammed down our throats again. The minister for classification obviously doesn't want to expose the peons working their arses off to pay his salary to anything that might warp their fragile minds. Fortunately for PS3 users (And pirating PC) PS3 games are not region coded, so you can import an un-censored copy from a free country.

Australia should be in the Guiness Book of World Record for banning the most games! I'm just gonna import it just like the other 50 games that got censored/banned.

Man Australia needs to lighten up on the ban wagon. To clarify i'm talking about their politicians that seem to think that mock violence causes real violence... I'm pretty sure real violence causes real violence.

Awesome. This means the devs are doing their job right. Neither Predator or Aliens is meant for kids. This goes to show they aren't watering down anything for the sake of the ignorant masses.

They refuse classification because they're worried about kids getting hold of it. They should try (like every other country should) teaching parents, that an 18 (M) rated game is not for kids. It's a bunch of crap how adults aren't allowed to enjoy things freely because some stupid parents go out an buy a game like this for their kid. You don't want your kids to see stuff like that, get some seance and pay attention to the rating. Even when I tell parents about it at work they grin stupidly in 'so what?' way. Then they complain that their kid is sleeping with prostitutes in GTA or killing innocent civilians in CoD:MW2. Parents just don't care, but other adults shouldn't be forced to suffer for their idiocy. I don't live in Australia, but I feel totally bad for you guys. Here's hoping you can still get Colonial Marines classified.

the government really needs to wake up to itself and introduce R18+ for games. Until then this kinda crap will continue to happen and will make the aussie gaming community increasingly aggitated.

Redflametrow said, "I don't even think the Catholic Church has tried this hard to go against video games." I am Catholic and my religion does not have anything against video games. Or has even tried to go against games. In fact many of the younger people at my church play violent video games all the time. We even had the game Perfect Dark years back that was being played in the churches bingo hall.

I am not into excessive violence, if Halo 3 style violence had a CoD 6 build it would b gr8. I dont care about the gore, but the gameplay is what wins me over.

Oh man. This is actually, one of the best things that could happen. When I read that you can do all those crazy moves in quick succession, bam, sold. Buying that on the midnight release. Thank you Sega, for finally making an Alien Vs. Predator game that might actually live up to the awesome source material.

Not happy for this. If sega don't release in Oz or do edit the game, I'll be importing. Just hope the original version gets into Hong Kong. Then it'll be coming my way.

I really doubt that banning videogames is sinking the entire Australian economy, Ownage, but I do agree that it's probably hurting VG retailers there more than the developers. I'm all in favor of videogames moving away from excessive goriness and gratuitous violence... but not at the expense of not playing AVP or L4D.

Poor Australia. I feel bad for them; all the really good games keep getting banned. This one looks to be promising to the Alien and Predator movies, so that pretty much blows that it's getting banned. Man, by the time I'm an old man, Aussies arn't gonna have any video games lol! Ah well. At least there is a way around everything, and with persistence, one can get anything they want--they just gotta know how/where to get it. By the way, does anyone know if Duke Nukem 3D got banned in Australia?

I live in Australia, and to say the truth, it isn't that advanced. It is advanced in spending money when they shouldn't. The police suck as well, so that contributes to why Australia is very behind cause violence is never stopped and the lack of police encourages violence, and the government is stupid and thinks violence is so high even when the welfare is the best in the world. Therefore they think games are the next step to stop these violence when they can just recruit MANY MORE police. Only 6000 police in Australia - according to wikipedia.

F***man, Two in as many weeks. The biggest problem with the classification board is the inconsistency (spelling). I mean FFS when you can get a high profile game like MW2 in with the player wiping out civillians but not aliens ripping off heads or junkies getting high on roids, it just doesnt make any sense.
