Alan Wake's Return Appears on Trademark Database

Remedy Entertainment's cult classic may be making a comeback.

Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind Max Payne and upcoming Xbox One title Quantum Break, has filed a trademark for Alan Wake's Return, sparking speculation a new game set in the Alan Wake universe may be on the way.

The trademark listing was spotted on the European Union Trademark Database by a NeoGAF user, who also noted that an Alan Wake's Return website was registered in 2015.

Although the listing states Remedy Entertainment is the owner of the trademark submission, it is possible the studio was not involved and it was instead submitted by a third-party. Hoax trademark listings for highly-sought after game sequels regularly appear on databases, most notable among these is the Half-Life 3 submission that was later revealed to be a fake.

Additionally, a trademark registration doesn't necessarily mean a new project is in development.

In September 2014, Remedy's creative director, Sam Lake, said the studio would like to return to Alan Wake some day.

"We're really, really proud of all the games we have made," he said. "And obviously all of them are dear to us. They have a special place in our hearts. You never know about the future and as we have said about Alan Wake, the sequel didn't work out at this point. But definitely we are looking for opportunities to do more, someday, when the time is right."

Speaking earlier in February, Lake also said that designs for an Alan Wake sequel were put together after the first game was released, but were abandoned. Since then, he claims, Remedy has come up with much better ideas for Alan Wake 2.

"We have been iterating the idea of what an Alan Wake sequel could be, and along the way there has been much better ideas than what the concept coming out of Alan Wake was for the sequel. "

Remedy has also previously said it wants to return to Alan Wake when the time is right.

"Among other things, we are discussing the possibility of an Alan Wake sequel with multiple partners, but nothing has been decided," Lake said.

Quantum Break, the studio's next title, will launch on April 5 across Xbox One and PC. The Windows edition will be sold exclusively through the Windows 10 store; it will not be available on Steam.

Those that preorder the digital Xbox One edition gets a free copy of the Windows 10 PC version. The console and PC versions support cross-save between them.

Hope so. They just better release it on time. Wanted it when it was first announced, but by the time it came out, I had sole my 360 two years prior. Then I had to wait two more years for a pc release.

My biggest gripe is by the time I got to play it, it was "been there, done that" for me. It was basically just a better written, more polished Alone in the Dark Inferno.

Alan Wake was fantastic, and my third favorite game of 2010. Great setting, interesting story, one of the most intentionally annoying, though likable side characters, and a great soundtrack.

a REAL max payne sequel and a REAL Alan Wake game.

When you see what the game could be before MS got into the game, you won't believe...

It's so clear the game was scaled back to fit Xbox 360.

“Remedy Entertainment's cult classic may be making a comeback”

Cult classic? Really?

Do people play Alan Wake more than twice? Do people even talk about it in their free time?

@naryanrobinson: Yes, considering it has classic action/adventure gameplay and is very similar to a Stephen King novel, I must say I finished it 3 times.

@Killing_Free: .

Since 2009 the only peeps I've heard out of this game have been news about different platforms it may be released on, and Alan Wake 2 news.

Quantum Break has just about gone gold and Remedy is a relatively small studio (so probably wouldn't jump into another project so soon).. I doubt this is a real trademark for an Alan Wake follow up, the timing doesn't seem right just yet but I do sure hope I'm wrong

@BelaidKL: Yeah, it's way too soon, but who knows. They could have conceptualizing it in the background--hopefully, maybe? : P

Yeah well I will take that announcement with a grain of salt...

I would however love an Alan Wake sequel and I hope the awesome guys from Poets of the Fall make the soundtrack, again. It was a great game.

Please let Alan hit the treadmill before the new game. If he has the lung capacity of a three year old again I'm going to be pissed!

@dexda: That was really one of the only negative things in the game to me, or most major I should say, simply because it was unrealistic, and it made the game needlessly intense as you tried running from light to light away from the taken.

I sure hope so. Also a real Max Payne game after 1 and 2 (yes I don't think 3 counted).

@edwardnygma: Remedy don't have the Max Payne rights anymore.

Honestly, not sure why MP3 gets so much hate. I liked it a LOT. Not as much as the first two, but it was still awesome!

@edwardnygma: 3 exists but it was all a big nightmare inside Max's head. Max woke up, drunk and confused. A gaping hole inside his brain. Mona was still dead. She abandoned him just like all his loved ones. No amount of painkillers could bring her back, or the searing pain inside his booze filled heart. Max's "American Dream" had died with her. The "American Dream" Max sought after was just that, a dream. Pockets of memories recessed deep within his mind, pretentious but happy. Maybe he was doomed to walk the world, alone and broken. Whatever he touched, turned to ash in front of him. Max looked into himself, realized the bitter truth and kept walking into the cold bitter night.

Max Payne's journey through the night will continue.....
