Alan Wake will return 'when the time is right'

Remedy says it could have made "less ambitious" sequel, but it wouldn't have done series justice; Quantum Break to be "ultimate Remedy experience."

The Alan Wake series will return "when the time is right," developer Remedy Entertainment has said. In a new video, creative director Sam Lake explained that despite attempts to make a full-on sequel, things never worked out.

No Caption Provided

"After the first game, we worked hard to make the sequel happen. But you know these games are huge undertakings and many things need to fall in place," Lake said. "The right partners and the funding. From the creative perspective, it would be awesome if we could just create cool stuff and not worry about minor details like money. But we all know that that's not the case."

Lake explained that Alan Wake was not an instant success, but has since become a cult classic with franchise sales (Alan Wake and Alan Wake's American Nightmare) crossing 3 million units. He said the studio would like to return to the franchise some day, but only under the right terms.

"Even though we worked hard on it, the sequel wasn't happening. The time wasn't right for that," Lake said. "Sure, we could have gone ahead and created something less ambitious, but we felt that that wouldn't have done justice to [fans], to us--we want to be really proud of everything we create--and certainly wouldn't have done justice to Alan Wake."

"Alan Wake is really dear to me and to everyone at Remedy. We definitely want to keep on working on Alan Wake," he added. "I definitely want to create something new for Alan Wake when the time is right."

Lake also took a moment to discuss Remedy's just-announced Xbox One-exclusive, Quantum Break, which was revealed during the platform's announcement on Tuesday. He described the game as the "ultimate Remedy experience."

"Happily, we got a full backing for something new. A new concept. A new IP," Lake said. "Something big; something bigger than what we have created ever before. Something where we can take everything that we have learned from Alan Wake; everything that we have learned from Max Payne. And we were able to put that all together and to create what could be called the ultimate Remedy experience. "

As a PS user, I heard that this game was awesome. Is this a system seller?

@fredyellowone It's got it's following for being a classic "Sleeper Hit" No one really took much notice when it came out but when people started playing it there was this huge word of mouth about how good it was. I would say it is a solid 8.5 and you won't regret buying it. System seller? Well that's subjective, I would expect a game to get 9.5 or up to be a system seller and this game falls just below that.

@fredyellowone It's an interactive movie with very lame game elements as a PS3 and 360 owner, It's good for sure, system seller not in a million years imo.

@blueinheaven @fredyellowone It's not even remotely an interactive movie. Go play Heavy Rain or Indigo Prophecy. Those are interactive movies.

@blueinheaven Game play was awesome. The only downside was the light/gun mechanic got a bit old in the last 1/4 of the game, the reason I wouldn't call it a classic or great game but just very good.

@blueinheaven The gameplay was a refreshing change from the sea of brain dead 1 dimensional shooters which litter the Xbox game library.

@blueinheaven @bdous Boy you really hated it didn't you. There was no way it was a an interactive movie. You obviously don't play Japanese games, now there you can find interactive movies.

@blueinheaven @toshineon @bdous I thought the game was great myself. The awkward game mechanics lent more to a nightmarish feel, like trying to stave off monsters in a dream. Made me feel more in danger because of that sense of not being in perfect control.

Quantum Break will be a great game I'm sure. The poorly made teaser trailer will probably be forgotten of if they deliver good gameplay at E3.

Alan Wake announced at E3 2005, released in 2010.

So can we expect Quantum Break in 2018?

I just bought Alan Wake and its expansion for 1,5 dollar at the Humble weekly bundle site. I would have paid more, but it was all I had in my paypal account and there was no lower limit, no average to beat, so 1,5 dollars it was. I also got tons of bonus content. I'd like to see more of Alan Wake or similar games, but first I have to reduce my backlog and it'll probably still be pretty big when Remedy thinks the time is right, so I don't mind the wait.

Now I'm kinda sad.... I was under the impression they might have been doing a little work on Alan Wake 2.... didn't know it was COMPLETELY shelved at the moment. Just seeing this story makes me want to start up a new game of Alan Wake.

For those of you that played both AW and AW: American Nightmare... consider this.... a game with the environments, settings, and mood of Alan Wake with the upgraded combat and weapons of American Nightmare. Sweeeeeeet. Personally I hope it's more along the lines of the base Alan Wake and less of the surrealistic stuff from "The Signal" and "The Writer" because I just loved the environment of the town.... beautiful place that place was.....

Being a big Remedy Fan, i loved MP 1&2 and really enjoyed Alan Wake not just the gaming and visual elements, but its also the attention they put into the narratives, so Im really intruiged to see what Quantum Break has in store.

I would also love to see an Alan Wake 2 someday also.

Just itching for E3 now, as im just dying to see what Sony & MS have to offer.

Alan wake was the only worth IP on the 360, if they ever release a sequel i'll have to wait until a PC release, because the tvbox one isn't worth a damn

It'll be awesome if Alan Wake 2 comes to both XBOX and PC because I'm not buying another XBOX....

The original Alan Wake was amazing, great storytelling, interesting gameplay mechanics and one of the most beautiful settings in a modern world setting game....

@MJ12-Conspiracy I agree, wonderful game - The setting was particularly poignant for me because I live in the pacific northwest where the game takes place - and they did an incredible job of capturing the look and feel of this area. many times i felt like i was in familiar real world places around here.

Now this is news that I have been waiting for. "Alan Wake" and "Alan Wake's American Nightmare" (along with "Deadlight", "Condemned: Criminal Origins" and "Neo Geo Battle Coliseum") are the reasons I kept my Xbox 360 (also have WiiU, PS3, Wii, 3DS and iPhone 5 so not a fanboy). The original "Alan Wake" is one of my favorite games this generation. Glad to hear that another "Alan Wake" will be coming in the future; but only on Xbox One or multi-platform?...hmmmm. Great news!

It sounds like the platform will be determined by where the money to make it comes from.

I would LOVE to see Condemned return on XB1.

I give huge credit to Sam Lake and Remedy. It's exceedingly rare for a company to reach out in such a personal way to the community. Even more so one that addresses us like intelligent and understanding human beings.

I'm interested in seeing more of Quantum Break, and when Alan Wake 2 finally does become a reality, Remedy can be certain I'll be buying it the day it's released.

Alan Wake was so good of a story telling, gameplay and a good admisphere when it came out for Xbox 360 but sadley it's downfall it came out at the same time when Red Dead Redemption came out at the same time and that game was overshadow. Alan wake 2 could have made a good goddamn Launch game for Xbox One.
