Gathering, a division of Take-Two, has announced that Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is currently in development and is scheduled for release in the middle of this year. The latest game in the fantasy-themed turn-based strategy series will have players battle against a new empire that has launched an assault against the ancient races and all things magic, while an even greater threat of hellish demons lurks in the shadows. The game mixes role-playing conventions with a broad strategic scope, and players will control mythical champions that will have dozens of new spells to use in the attempt to stop the evil Phobius.

Shadow Magic introduces a new eerie shadow world dimension, new creatures, and a diverse range of landscapes. The game will also feature a map generator and an enhanced campaign editor, which should give players plenty of opportunities for adventure.

"With each installment we have aspired to appeal to both die-hard fantasy fans and attract new players to the genre," said Lennart Sas, lead designer on the project at Triumph. "We have paid particular attention to the interface to ensure that the now almost limitless modification options are easily accessible and enable newcomers to get straight into the action."

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, like the previous games in the series, is being produced by Dutch developer Triumph Studios. The game is scheduled for release this July.
