After Two Months Of Switch At No. 1, PS4 Leads US Hardware Sales In May

PS4 topped Switch in the US last month.

The NPD Group has released its monthly sales report for the United States in May, and the PlayStation 4 came out as the month's top-selling hardware. That puts an end to a brief run by the Nintendo Switch, which had been the top seller in its first two months on the market.

As is the norm, we didn't get exact sales figures, so it's unclear exactly how much the PS4 topped Switch by; Switch had sold 280,000 units in the US during April. There was also no mention of the NES Classic Edition's performance. The system was the No. 2 seller in April behind Switch, but it was also discontinued that month.

Overall, hardware sales reached $147 million for the month, an increase of 7%. This is attributed to Switch, which NPD analyst Mat Piscatella described as the "primary catalyst for hardware spending gains." For the year overall, hardware spending is up 18% according to NPD data. Piscatella noted that spending on consoles has offset a decline in portable sales.

Total sales across the industry in the US were actually down 11% for the month, dropping to $542 million from $610 million a year ago. That's due to a big drop in software sales, which were down 20% year-over-year to $271 million from $339 million. PC software sales were down 48% to $23 million from $12 million, though keep in mind this--like much of NPD's data--is not a complete picture, as it doesn't include Battle.net sales, for one. The decline in software can be attributed at least in part to a difficult comparison with last year's releases, which included Overwatch and Uncharted 4.

On the accessories side, sales were roughly flat at $112 million (up from $111 million). Controller sales were up 6%, with the Switch Pro Controller being the month's top seller. In terms of software, the debuting Injustice 2 came out in the top spot, with two Switch games making the top five. You can check out the full May 2017 top 10 here.

console competition is good for gamers and consumers. I dont understand why fanboys want Nintendo to fail.

I personally enjoy both my ps4 and my switch, crazy to see the ps4 still leading the pack after all this time.

well, that didn't last long. the switch is already struggling against a 3.5 year old console... which one would assume many people already own. this is not a good sign.

let's not forgot how overpriced the swith is. in canada, it sells for $399 which is $20 more expensive than the base ps4! how ridiculous is that? ps4 has at least 2X the graphical power of the switch and an abundance of software to play! also, nintendo appears to still be having supply problems -- not necessarily due to high demand, but as a result of manufacturing inefficiencies -- which is also hurting its sales.

i expect the switch to be a top seller during the holiday season, though, seeing as sony will not have a big exclusive fall release aside from gran turismo sport and the horizon expansion. mario odyssey should prove to be a big success for nintendo in november sales. then again, strong 3rd party offerings on ps4 such as star wars battlefront 2 and destiny 2 might be enough to hold off nintendo sales. yes, 3rd party support is as important now as it has always been, and nintendo will continue to struggle in this area, thereby affecting its sales potential. beginning in 2018, sony will take back the crown for 12 consecutive months due to its impeccable software lineup including the likes of god of war, spiderman, shadow of the colossus remake, days gone and detroit: become human as well as strong 3rd party games such as red dead redemption 2 (this game will move consoles no doubt).

@Xristophoros: I don't know I think Xbox may take October and November with the new Xbox one X releasing. I could be wrong as it's expensive but it'll have a marketing push around that time I imagine. It'll be pushed harder the the PS4 Pro is, it's got a "new console" feel that the Pro didn't have. I could be wrong though, Mario sells Nintendo hardware and the new Mario game releases in the holidays doesn't it?

Haven't bought a Switch yet. Zelda is extremely tempting... but it seems like they are ironing out a lot of wrinkles in the UI, Store and some other core issues. I'll wait for a bundle. Loving my PS4 and ONE. Plenty to play on both of them.

@stickybun: 3.0 firmware came out this week which is a huge improvement in many areas. By the time you decide, there will likely be many more games (definitely some good Nintendo releases). I have X1 & ps4 also, & I've neglected my most played console (X1) since I got my switch. Zelda & ps4 exclusives are all I have time for. Having choices is great!

Reading through the comments its always funny the fanboyism bullshit on each side going on. Jesus guys..its pathetic...especially on the Sony side. You guys feel unsecured...I don't get it. Sony has unique games Nintendo doesn't have - Nintendo has unique games Sony won't have. Just enjoy the games everyone has to offer.

Regarding numbers. All I can say its a US number and things must be looked globally as it always has. I'm in Canada and its not that difficult to get a Switch but only occasionally you see one sitting on the shelves. Talking with some around me, wait time seems a week to two weeks if you look hard enough (personally took me a week). Reading posts and talking with some of my US friends, it seems to be pretty much impossible to get one under a month wait and people are still looking for them in the US. I know in some countries its super easy to find them. So its really an inconsistency when it comes to stock vs population.

Welp, looks like the artificial hype and "success" didn't last very long. Just goes to show that selling something on nothing more than a 'gimmick' doesn't get your product very far. Sure, the Nintendo die hards all went out and got a Switch at launch, then spammed the internet claiming how "successful" the new console is. Even gaming sites went great lengths to sell the console claiming 'Breath of the Wild' is the best game ever created. What a bunch of baloney. Now look at how it's doing among general consumers. It's already being outsold by the PS4.

@jarobusa: I just went on the USA amazon site and they were in stock. I'm from the UK and there's no shortages here. Obviously that might not be the case in shops, but I'm always wary of these extreme shortages. The PS4 had the same issue and still was the biggest selling console.

I'm curious to know the switch sales figures here in Europe. Seems like they're hard to find in the States, while theyre sitting on shelves of every store I go in to while I was in German and Denmark.

@sealionact: Yeah that pretty much what I posted. There seems to be inconsistencies when it comes to units shipped per country vs population. Not that hard in Canada either. Not often on shelves (maybe 1 day shelf life) but a few phone calls and a week or two and you're golden.

@mersmackmaster: Where do you live? Here in the US they are everywhere. Amazon, Target, Walmart, and shoot if you want a used one go on Craigslist. People are selling them off like crazy now that they beat Zelda.

@xnshd: It only lasted for 2 months in the lead...Cause it was a new console. Of course the first 2 months would be the strongest. While I'm sure it'd be somewhat larger had it continued to be in stock, comparing it to the PS4 launch in the first 2 months, while Holiday vs. March is certainly a factor, as is a divided wallet, the PS4 sold around 4.2 million in 1 1/2 months being on the market. X1 sold around 3 million.

The Switch hasn't hit those ridiculous numbers. It's doing very well, compared to the competition with a 3 year head start, cause 40+ million people already have their PS4/X1 consoles. New consoles always sell well. What will be more interesting is the momentum. That is settling down, now that we have passed the launch window barrier. I'm sure June will see a farther decline, though it's difficult to tell whether that is majorly due to stock shortages or a waning of interest.

Even so, it's certainly doing better than the Wii U...No arguments there.

@xnshd: Can't find it anywhere near me. I like to check on the way home from work. But seeing as I work in NYC, the demand may vary. Certainly difficult to find online, unless one opts for the overpriced bundles, which still have 2-3 week delays.

I just see the demand as normal as every console launch. It's too early to tell if the Switch is a success or not. It's clearly not a flop, but each consecutive month will provide more and more stats to track Nintendo's sales. If they can keep that momentum up through the Holiday season, they will be in a great position for 2018.

@xnshd: Considering they're going for about a $50-$80 premium on ebay, you're a fool not to buy all the switch consoles that you see "anywhere"
