After Halo 5, the Galaxy "Will Never Be the Same"

"You're going to see the Halo galaxy change in really important ways."

Although Microsoft is keeping specifics under wraps, the company now says the story events set into motion in Halo 5: Guardians will forever change the overall universe in "really important ways." After the events of Halo 5, the story "will never be the same," developers said as part of a new interview.

Speaking with Forbes, Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor said, "There are some elements of the story that are definitely there to surprise people." Some of these surprises, he explained, are being teased out in the game's live-action TV trailers, in which Master Chief is "dead."

That's the "official" story. But really, after a mysterious event at the beginning of Halo 5, Master Chief goes AWOL from the UNSC. Joining him on his rogue mission are other members of Blue Team. Fireteam Osiris, meanwhile, led by Spartan Locke, are sent out to hunt Master Chief down. Creative director Tim Longo said the game will play out like an interplanetary manhunt.

As this Chief vs. Locke story plays out, there is also the matter of the Guardians, the mysterious Forerunner constructs referenced in past games and media but not explored too deeply. That's all set to change with Halo 5.

"There are catastrophic, big events going on all across the galaxy when it comes to the Guardians," Longo said, without giving anything away.

In addition, Halo 5 executive producer Josh Holmes teased that Halo will never be the same after the game's story comes to a close.

"One of the things that's most exciting about this story is through the course of your journey in Halo 5, you're going to see the Halo galaxy change in really important ways and it will never be the same," he said. "On a truly galactic scale, things are transformed through the course of the story."

If that all sounds like a lot to take in, O'Connor assures that Halo 5's story will be "self-contained" and easy to understand.

In other Halo 5 news, you can now listen to the game's title song and check out some newly re-designed Covenant vehicles. Microsoft has also confirmed that work has begun on Halo 6.

Halo 5 launches on October 27 exclusively for Xbox One.

I'm looking forward to it... Just not as revved up this time around. Im getting it regardless... I'm hoping the game kicks serious ass.

@samahir01: Tuesday...

Master chief will paint his armor pink and pull a Bruce Jenner. He will henceforth be Joan 117.

Avatar image for Kelreynn

@forester057: That was pretty funny. I actually laughed!

I'm going to guess that "the galaxy will never be the same," means that somehow or another one of the rings gets activated, hence the emphasis on the MCC so people could be reminded how it all started in the first place.

If I'm right, I expect a cookie from someone.

Avatar image for aussiegamer78

@bssmackjack: I'll give u a cookie what sort

Avatar image for bigcrusha

@bssmackjack: They did say this will be the darkest title of 4 through 6 so you might be right. I predict that Earth and the rest of the solar system will get eradicated, only the outer colonies will remain and will cause instability in the UNSC. I also think the Guardians might lead to the subsequent revival of the Didact somehow.

I can't wait! Loving Halo 4 - so ready for 5. Fav is still 2 but next best is 4. Love the Forerunner weapons!

Avatar image for cantloginnow

I hope it turns out great,I love Halo.

Avatar image for IMAHAPYHIPPO

343 attempted this with Halo 4, as well, replacing the substance, emotional depth, and gameplay finesse of Bungie's Halo's with a big, devastating "universe altering" moment, hoping the simple fact that it happened would overshadow the fact that Halo 4 failed to capture the essence of the series.

Avatar image for Evil_Sidekick

I'm sure, with this "social angle crap", Halo will soon be a MMO

Avatar image for Terminator95

Until #6 comes out. And 7,8,9,10,11,12.

Avatar image for andfx8

So I will have a chance to be finally killed by the ACTUAL "guardians"?

I sure hope I get a chance to return the favor for all of those multiplayer deaths of mine that were attributed to them. Cones, crates, trains... you name it.

Avatar image for Zicoroen

@andfx8: There are even archievements attributed to them. LOL.

Avatar image for eloguvna

When you put it like that, it sounds like it could be rather intriguing and that something even bigger will happen in Halo 5. I guess I could find out for myself when the game drops later this month.

Avatar image for BelaidKL

I'm incredibly interested to see what is made of the Master Chief at the end of this game... I hope they don't cower out of labelling him a traitor or fraud by it's conclusion, it's the only way I can see the galaxy never being the same again.

I have a feeling these "really important changes" are going to make me not want to play Halo anymore. I hope not, though.

Avatar image for xanatos357

If the game ends in a cliffhanger like Halo 2, I'm gonna be pissed.

Avatar image for PinkFloyd2003

@xanatos357: I've pretty much already come to terms with that. That seems to be how most trilogies go.

Avatar image for kumar_eats_pie

this game needs to get here already.

I love the Halo franchise, I have all the games I've read all the written material & watched everything TV/movie related.

However something about Halo 5 just isn't grabbing me, As somebody who couldn't give a stuff about playing online & who only ever plays the SP Campaign I just don't like what I've seen & read about Halo 5's Campaign & I especially don't like the Heavy Co-Op/Squad element to it.

I've got the money put aside to buy a Halo 5 XB1 bundle, But as of now i'm not sure thats what that bit of cash will be spent on right now because i'm just not all that excited about the game, Certainly nowhere near as excited/hyped as I was for Halo 2-4.

Avatar image for Zicoroen

@peter-gareth: Maybe it's just because you enjoy playing alone, as online gaming isn't what you like. The idea of 4 characters co-op may scare many isolated or lone wolf players. It can change after Halo 5. Think about t.

Avatar image for b00me

@peter-gareth: Did you listen to the 'Hunt the Truth' podcast series, season 2 just started. I wasn't that stoked for the H5 story, but after listening to that and hearing what's happening I'm ready for to the campaign, and I rarely play FPS campaigns anymore, usuaslly just the MP.

Avatar image for justin1946394

You can't mean.... This will be the last of the series you totally destroyed!!??!?! THANK GOD!!!!!

Avatar image for andfx8

@justin1946394: I do not concur

Avatar image for louixiii

I can't wait. I'm amped

Avatar image for skyhighgam3r

Does this mean the story will FINALLY stop being incredibly stupid, cliche, predictable, boring, and poorly executed?

Because that's a major reason this series has always sucked, and no I don't care about stupid death-match, it's the same multiplayer crap that they have been re-re-re-doing since DOOM.

I know they are fixing other idiotic things, like not being able to run and not being able to AIM YOUR GUN. So hopefully this will stop sucking too.

Avatar image for Mogan

@skyhighgam3r: I doubt it. Halo's story is Syfy Channel Original material, sure, but that's also the appropriate level of plot for the gaming equivalent of a Summer Action Blockbuster. I mean, the plots of The Fast & The Furious movies have always been brain poison, but that's not really why you're there.

And you could run in Halo 4, and I think that's back in 5, and I believe you can aim most of the guns in this one. Wasn't that something the Halo fan-base was all up in arms about earlier this year?

Avatar image for Zicoroen

In real life, aiming a target 6 feets away isn't real. You never do it, but every generic shooter let you do it without consequences. Worse: generic shooters let you keep aiming even if a meteor shower is upon you. Halo don't let it happen.

Halo makes the most skilled players not by chance. Aim is for long distances.

Avatar image for senorbusyman

well ill be the judge of that 343 to see where it goes but definately excited to play alongside fred, kelly & linda

Avatar image for lnception

A lot of what this game is doing to the Halo series is just leaving me with a bitter taste...One example, I don't like how the flood is considered more of a nuisance than a threat in these Halo games.

Avatar image for neowarrior793

i dont like where halo 5 is going

Avatar image for TwinStripeUK

@neowarrior793: As in 'going to a console you don't even own'?

Avatar image for neowarrior793

@TwinStripeUK: i have an XB1 and i have MCC i even had an original Xbox with halo 1 2 and a 360 with 3 and 4 so dont try and dispute my love of halo. i simply dont like how they set up this story.

Avatar image for Mogan

@neowarrior793: I do. Halo needed freshening up.

Avatar image for skyhighgam3r

@neowarrior793: Why? Because you can finally run, or aim your gun, and maybe the story won't be absolute garbage anymore?

I might actually enjoy playing this, instead of being dragged along in the campaign because it was the only co-op shooter around.

Avatar image for neowarrior793

@skyhighgam3r: because things have changed that takes away from the fun. the lack of split screen is an example of this, i love playing with friends, hell i even made a mini-game with warhogs and now i carnt have my friends over to play they need to pay just to play a game with me. then there's the story-line that i feel has been dragged out too much, then there's other aspects that have changed. i went to egx and played a little and i wasn't enjoying it at all and i love halo games.

Avatar image for lnception

@neowarrior793: Likewise good sir.

Avatar image for davillain-

I'll be the judge on that when I play it at launch.

Avatar image for SecretPolice

HOAT baby, can't hardly wait, this gonna be great.

Avatar image for davillain-

@SecretPolice: I'm just more interested in the Campaign then MP. War Zone on the other hand, that right there I'm looking forward to playing it.

Avatar image for SecretPolice

@davillain-: Same here my friend, same here. :)

Avatar image for pad242

@SecretPolice: me three...
