After Casting Problems, Disney Reveals Aladdin's Main Actors

Aladdin, Jasmine, and the Genie announced.

Disney has officially unveiled its central cast for Guy Ritchie's live-action adaptation of the classic animated film Aladdin. At the D23 Expo, the studio revealed who will play Aladdin, Jasmine, and the Genie:

  • Aladdin -- Mena Massoud (Jack Ryan)
  • Jasmine -- Naomi Scott (Power Rangers)
  • The Genie -- Will Smith

The news officially confirms the rumors that Will Smith will step into the role so famously played by Robin Williams in 1992.

No Caption Provided

The announcement comes after reports that the film was having a lot of trouble casting its lead role. While the studio reportedly had several actresses in mind for Jasmine (including the winner Naomi Scott), Disney apparently struggled to cast Aladdin.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio was looking for an actor in his 20s, who could sing and dance and was of "Middle-Eastern or Indian descent," and it spent months screen testing actors with no success. With today's news, it's confirmed Canadian actor Mena Massoud will play the role.

There's still no release date for Aladdin, but we are following the story and will update as soon as a date is revealed. GameSpot is covering D23 all weekend, so stay tuned for more Disney, Marvel, and potentially Star Wars news.

I'm waiting for that one person who is somehow going to try to twist this up and claim it to somehow be an "SJW" thing for them to cast a nonwhite in the main role. I know. It sounds ridiculous. But the anti-SJW crowd has grown to be as twisted and regressive as the SJW crowd they oppose in the first place. Nothing would surprise me right now.

@robbehG: Im pretty sure no one is thinking that besides you. SJW are the only ones who are twisted and probably on the edge of insanity. Any sane person wont see a problem in this cast, as this is normal and expected, differently from a SJW who thinks that everything in existence should be replaced by ugly women and black people.

Meh. It seems like another remake of a movie that doesn't need to be remade. Pass.

@Purpledust: Why even have a comment section if we don't comment on things? Most remakes are garbage and Hollywood has been incapable of putting out something original for awhile now. If you want to waste your money on this garbage go right ahead.

@PrimusTool: let's put it this way; you may not like something, you may hate it and find it a waste of time and money; but it doesn't mean it is in fact a garbage thing and a waste of it all; it just means you don't like it. So, YOU think it's garbage, fine: ultimately it isnt. So you are entitled to do and say what you want of course, but don't expect me to care about it if it's that type of opinion. just saying.

They should have gone with The Little Mermaid. Alladin is a good cartoon but as a film it will probably be shit. TLM would have been really magical for the kids. Hopefully they do that one next.

This is what I call the lazy part of Disney. Is there any reason to be upset about this? No. Disney will keep making live-action movies because they make money. If one of them ends up bombing, then Disney might start changing their minds about making them, But however you might feel about Disney, their company does more good than bad. They do have some agendas though.

@Cashmoney007: And what would that agenda be? In the case of this movie?

Interesting note, people should remember that Will Smith's girlfriend in Independence Day, Vivica Fox, was named Jasmine...

I like will Smith but he's a bit old can he even pull off the role with the same energy as Robin Williams. I dunno I'll wait to see his costume. Honestly Chris Tucker might have the energy we're looking for even with his higher pitched voice atleast I hope he still got it he went MIA in the movie biz ages ago.

@Celsius765: Williams was 41 when he voiced the role. Smith is 48, but most would say he's aged quite well and doesn't look it. I think he can pull it off, they wouldn't have casted him othewise.

Aladdin and Jasmine actors are basically unknown, they also needed some kind of known, American, star power.

@NeonicTrash: I'm grateful they didn't put American actors into the roles of Aladdin and Jasmine. Not trying to dissolve white actors but growing up that mostly all I ever saw casted in movies(with the occasional token non white actor). It's time we let others shine and hone their skills. I even want a redo of Avatar the Last Airbender that movie was mediocre

@ChldsPlay: I did too they were token characters usually 1 or 2 of them, or supporting cast/expendables. Would you prefer fair skinned?
