[UPDATE] Lionsgate declined to comment on the following story.

Earlier this year, Allegiant, the latest entry in the Divergent film series, performed significantly worse at the box office than its predecessors. It only made around half of what each of the two previous filmspulled in (according to Box Office Mojo), and now it looks like the series finale is set to skip theaters altogether in favor of television.

Variety reports that production company Lionsgate plans to end the Divergent series with a TV movie and spinoff series set in the same world. The last movie, Ascendant, was scheduled for a theater release in June 2017.

Variety's source tells them that it's still in the early stages of negotiation, and Lionsgate Television will take the reins on production. It's not been confirmed if the series' cast will return or if director Lee Toland Krieger is still on board. We've contacted Lionsgate and will update this article as more information is revealed.

Allegiant's box office debut brought in $29.1 million, which was a more than 40 percent drop from both Divergent and Insurgent's opening weekend earnings. Allegiant went on to make $179.2 million with a budget of $110 million, not including marketing.

The Divergent film series stars Shailene Woodley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Theo James (Underworld: Awakening), Ansel Elgort (Carrie), and Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road). The series is based on a post-apocalyptic book series by author Veronica Roth.
